In the US (and elsewhere), the JN.1 variant surged from almost nothing in November to almost all infections today. A very fast data STUDY finds that JN.1 immunity fades quickly. Effectiveness of a prior infection preventing reinfection:

82% 3-6 months
51% 6-9 months
18% 9-12 months
-2.5% >1 year

“The findings show that the protection of natural infection against reinfection with JN.1 is strong only among those who were infected within the last 6 months.”

@augieray Good to know since it's counter-intuitive based on what we learned in the past about immunity (e.g., chicken pox).

I live several blocks from the Milwaukee Art Museum, famous for the Quadracci Pavilion created by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Last night, on a chilly, foggy Christmas Eve, we walked to the museum, and I snapped a few photos. I thought I'd share a couple!

A brief history of people telling me I'm wrong, panicky, and addicted to doom. I don't think I know more than experts. I think I listen to experts and have tried to warn people about the facts. It takes the media weeks and public health agencies months to parse information, evaluate it, and act. But if you really listen to the sources who've been correct from the start, you can know what's going to happen earlier than others (and perpare better than others.)

I may be COVID-cautious, but that doesn't need to mean staying home. Today, my wife and I met a friend for lunch. We went to an outdoor sidewalk space with lots of ventilation, and we dined at 2:00 in the afternoon to avoid any lunch or dinner rush. Is it zero risk? No, but for us, it's the right balance of safety and sanity. I wish people would realize there's a world of choices between staying home and pretending COVID doesn't exist.

@augieray Nice illustration of reasonable balance. Well done Augie!

Dear nonprofit news organizations: I really really want to give you money to support your vital work, but you do not need my home address. All you need is my credit card number, expiration date, 3-number code on the back, and zip code connected to the card.

Maybe you want to send me a nice letter, which I appreciate. But the only acknowledgment I want is an email thank-you note that I can show to the IRS if they ever want evidence of the donation.

Please consider donors' privacy.

johnhobbs,
@johnhobbs@mstdn.ca avatar

@dangillmor Hi Dan. I understand your concern. I suspect, however, that the address requirement comes from the company processing the credit card transaction. Just something to consider.

Every year, on the first snowfall, our family had a small tradition. My mother loved Christmas but hated winter, so on the first day that snow fell, we'd call her up and sing “It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” She'd feign disgust and outrage, and we'd all have a good laugh.

She's been gone for more than two decades, but I still think of my mother and sing that song every year the first time I see snow.

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, eeee-very where you go..."

A few days ago I posted a prediction from some experts that this week would be our low point with another surge starting now. There is VERY early evidence that may be true.

Biobot is showing in wastewater has bottomed out in the past week. https://biobot.io/data/

The CDC is showing that more wastewater sites are seeing growth than decline. https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#wastewater-surveillance

And Walgreens data shows we MAY be at an inflection point in positive rate. (Time will tell.) https://www.walgreens.com/healthcare-solutions/covid-19-index

I took a several month break from maintaining my list of studies showing the longer-term risks of infections. I'm afraid I burnt out, but I kept seeing studies and felt guilty for not capturing them. So, I'm back to adding to my public spreadsheet. It's now up to 312 studies proving COVID damages hearts, brains, immune systems, reproductive systems and raises risks of chronic, long-term health impairments.

I made a longer post on situation right now. The short version: Cases are low, but there are signs infections are rising in the US. Moreover, as has been the case for two years, too many people are ignoring the increased health risks that come from repeated infections. Read more here:
