@trochee That's just the idea that the nation was founded by demigods blessed by Jesus. "Single greatest gathering of intelectual titans in the world has ever seen wrote our constitution," as they say.
It's common talking point by theocrats and conservatives in general. At best it's rah-rah bullshit. At worst it's divine right for conservatives.
@Edent what’s weird to me is the. Plot correction on the title cards. The 16:9 look worse. They’re darker and muddier. Sure the 4:3 are bit washed out, but at least I can see what’s in the frame.
"he was willing to die and gave his life in a way that hurt no one else"
man imagine if he had done it in a way that had stopped israeli soldiers from killing people, huh? dying in a way that "hurts no one" is just another way of saying you didn't even hurt the people committing a genocide
@beka_valentine yup. Committing suicide as a protest is bullshit. Self harm in any form is bullshit. All you did was make the number of people against whatever you’re against fewer.
Or as Patton put it, “No dumb bastard ever won a war by going out and dying for his country. He won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his country.”
I have watched two episodes of Game of Thrones (the premiere, and another much later in the series that was muted[*]) Didn’t really care. Didn’t hate it, but it didn’t grab me.
I think I had to torrent the episodes individually, and only got one. Couldn’t stream it anywhere.
[*] Stranger next to me watched the episode where the kid gets shoved out a window of a tower. Also, that Joffrey is apparently quite the little scamp.
It's kinda depressing how tumblr is imploding now and I'm seeing half my follow list go "man, after seeing both twitter and tumblr do this, it's really showing how it's a bad idea for a social media network to be run by a company who can make arbitrary changes without user consent.
@mcc@foone There definitely seems to be a large population of people that can’t conceive of an internet that isn’t one gigantic walled garden. Thus finding mastodon/activitypub confusing and intimidating.[*]
Mix in the mastodon old guard being quite insular, and frankly wrongheaded about a lot of things. It’s not really much of a surprise.
I like decentralization a lot, but man. The amount of Drama™ the masto community insists on is making me get a repetitive stress injury in my eyes from rolling them so much.
[*] I stand by the idea instances actually don’t matter beyond the ability to peace out and move when whatever instance admin gets drunk with power. Old masto folks putting an emphasis on choosing an instance adds needless anxiety.
Not me reading the 500-comment neighborhood Facebook thread about whether it is a violation of sanctified property rights when a neighbor puts (bagged) dog poop in your curb-accessible bin
(Wow what a lot of displaced anger...) #WestSeattle
@nyrath interesting that the bottom diagram is the STS, while the top diagram is notably not. That vehicle has a conventional wing and elevator configuration
This whole thread is basically about how people don’t understand the internet. They only understand products that they are lured into and controlled by someone else to enrich someone else.
I’m a big fan of federation and decentralization, but between the HOA and all this copyright maximalist talk, I think there’s a lot of very vocal people that actually do not like open access, open standards, and independent general computing.
Seriously. It’s an aesthetic, not an ideology for most people. Disappointing af.
