@trochee That's just the idea that the nation was founded by demigods blessed by Jesus. "Single greatest gathering of intelectual titans in the world has ever seen wrote our constitution," as they say.

It's common talking point by theocrats and conservatives in general. At best it's rah-rah bullshit. At worst it's divine right for conservatives.

@trochee I was an intern with Ilya at MSR.

I was not prepared for the number of billionaires I would know prior to them becoming billionaires.

I just love how everyone is preloading their, “I told you so”s and “Don’t blame me for staying home!”

All absolutely trash takes. You might not have started the fire, but you’re as fuck not getting out of the way of fucking fire engine.

Seriously. Go fuck yourselves. Go fuck yourselves in the least pleasing way possible, and then do it again until you die.

I've read a lot online about how "Y2K was overblown". As an engineer who worked like crazy in 1999 to correct our systems this drives me crazy.

Today I read about games going offline, watches getting frozen and airline tickets showing the wrong date.

Because of a leap year. Which happens every FOUR years (give or take).

Yeah Y2K was a one time thing. (Well at least until year 10000)

Isn't 2038 going to be fun.

Idly looking at the difference between the original 4:3 release of MASH and the new widescreen version.

The newer version looks so much better - but crops a fair bit from the top and bottom.

But the original version is missing a bunch of stuff from the sides of the images.

Now wondering if I can correct the scaling of the 16:9 version and overlay it on the 4:3 to get the maximum amount of image 😆

4:3 capture - there's more detail at the top and bottom.
Two men at a bar - the bell to the right is cut off.
Two men at a bar - the bell to the right is more visible as is a hatstand on the left. But the top and bottom of the image is missing.

jonathankoren,
@jonathankoren@sfba.social avatar

@Edent what’s weird to me is the. Plot correction on the title cards. The 16:9 look worse. They’re darker and muddier. Sure the 4:3 are bit washed out, but at least I can see what’s in the frame.

"he was willing to die and gave his life in a way that hurt no one else"

man imagine if he had done it in a way that had stopped israeli soldiers from killing people, huh? dying in a way that "hurts no one" is just another way of saying you didn't even hurt the people committing a genocide

jonathankoren,
@jonathankoren@sfba.social avatar

@beka_valentine yup. Committing suicide as a protest is bullshit. Self harm in any form is bullshit. All you did was make the number of people against whatever you’re against fewer.

Or as Patton put it, “No dumb bastard ever won a war by going out and dying for his country. He won it by making some other dumb bastard die for his country.”

There should be a site where people review TV shows, but only ones they started watching part way through.

jonathankoren,
@jonathankoren@sfba.social avatar

@misc I only watched 3(?) episodes of Breaking Bad and loved it.[*] I just never got back to watching it.

I slogged through all of season 1 of The Walking Dead, and hated every episode.

[*] Last episode was when the guy they were dissolving in a plastic tub broke through the ceiling because Jesse bought the wrong type of plastics

jonathankoren,
@jonathankoren@sfba.social avatar

@misc Life intervened and BB just fell off.

I have watched two episodes of Game of Thrones (the premiere, and another much later in the series that was muted[*]) Didn’t really care. Didn’t hate it, but it didn’t grab me.

I think I had to torrent the episodes individually, and only got one. Couldn’t stream it anywhere.

[*] Stranger next to me watched the episode where the kid gets shoved out a window of a tower. Also, that Joffrey is apparently quite the little scamp.

It's kinda depressing how tumblr is imploding now and I'm seeing half my follow list go "man, after seeing both twitter and tumblr do this, it's really showing how it's a bad idea for a social media network to be run by a company who can make arbitrary changes without user consent.

anyway, here's my bsky: ..."

jonathankoren,
@jonathankoren@sfba.social avatar

@mcc @foone There definitely seems to be a large population of people that can’t conceive of an internet that isn’t one gigantic walled garden. Thus finding mastodon/activitypub confusing and intimidating.[*]

Mix in the mastodon old guard being quite insular, and frankly wrongheaded about a lot of things. It’s not really much of a surprise.

I like decentralization a lot, but man. The amount of Drama™ the masto community insists on is making me get a repetitive stress injury in my eyes from rolling them so much.

[*] I stand by the idea instances actually don’t matter beyond the ability to peace out and move when whatever instance admin gets drunk with power. Old masto folks putting an emphasis on choosing an instance adds needless anxiety.

    This whole thread is basically about how people don’t understand the internet. They only understand products that they are lured into and controlled by someone else to enrich someone else.

    I’m a big fan of federation and decentralization, but between the HOA and all this copyright maximalist talk, I think there’s a lot of very vocal people that actually do not like open access, open standards, and independent general computing.

    Seriously. It’s an aesthetic, not an ideology for most people. Disappointing af.
