NYT/Siena Poll: Biden trailing Trump in five of the six most important battleground states. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/05/us/politics/biden-trump-2024-poll.html

joshgammon,

@w7voa I believe this is similar to Romney beating Obama is polls. Folks will come home to Biden as they start to pay attention to the race.

I finished Blankets today and it was absolutely incredible. Maybe one of the best things I’ve ever read. ❤️

joshgammon,

@matt read this in college and found it so moving. I'm not much of a graphic novel reader, so it felt really special.

Just spent a while unsubscribing from all the random email lists that my personal inbox has gotten flooded with.

I have nothing against mailing lists in principle - I’m a marketer, I have a list that I manage, and I do subscribe to a bunch of lists that I do regularly check and like.

The real problem is three-fold:

  1. Assuming consent or tricking users into emails
  2. Sending WAY TOO MANY emails
  3. Sending garbage useless promotion with no value
joshgammon,

@mariyadelano I am also able to allow a little bit of room for candle flavors lol

“Yes, Mark Zuckerberg is having a better year than Elon Musk. This is like saying your local Arby’s is doing better than an abandoned Burger King that has been taken over by Ebola-infected rats.”

Great piece by Jason O. Gilbert about how everyone suddenly decided that Zuck is “cool” because of #Threads: https://jogblog.substack.com/p/enough-with-the-mark-zuckerberg-love

    joshgammon,

@mariyadelano I truly don’t think it’s that serious. The Zuck love is a meme trend that will fade quickly. It’s not genuine love. It truly feels like it’s only to spite Musk.

    joshgammon,

@mariyadelano maybe some, but they probably already thought that about him. I think we can forget that normal people don’t really have strong opinions on these people or platforms

The hardest part in trying to write about is figuring out how to compassionately describe both sides of the divide.

On one hand, I’m rooted in the camp and you have all seen me making fun of the cringe and status-chasing on Threads.

On the other hand, I’m a marketer and a long-time lover of many mainstream web spaces. I don’t hate a lot of popular culture. And I missed so many of the people who only now migrated from .

So how do I approach this with kindness?

    joshgammon,

@mariyadelano Even reading through the replies you've gotten so far - still some folks want to offer negativity. Disappointing.

I think the only way to do it with kindness is to not center any debate on the content "quality" of various platforms. It is far too subjective. The content on isn't "garbage" because one doesn't like it. I think it's great content. The debate won't be settled over content because these camps want fundamentally different things. And that's ok.

If you’re on team “ActivityPub was all a lie and they’re not actually going to add it to Threads” then I’d really recommend this episode of Hard Fork where Adam Mosseri is asked exactly this question and I think he does a good job explaining why using ActivityPub makes the apo more appealing and is likely a good business decision in the long run.

The future of microblogging social media: everyone posting on their preferred platform to complain about some other new entrant into the microblogging social media market that people are buzzing about and which people who are comfortable with their existing choice don't want to bother with.

    joshgammon,

@mmasnick the chatter will die down soon enough.

There’s that word again. Fun. It’s more “fun” than Mastodon. Says who? Not me that’s for damn well sure. I’m having a ball here and so’s everyone I follow for the most part. I humbly suggest if Mastodon doesn’t feel “fun” to you, you are doing it wrong.

    joshgammon,

@gedeonm I mean, I say it's fun. Is that so wrong? The attitude on Mastodon is so hostile today.

Lots of people just have blanket negativity about social media. But I love social media. It can do so much good for people, and it has for me.

And that’s why everything going on is so stupid. Twitter used to be good, now it sucks. Reddit used to be good, now it sucks.

Mastodon is nice, Bluesky is nice, Instagram is nice. But there’s so much fragmentation and it feels like I’m losing a lot of the connections I used to have.

    joshgammon,

@ChanceHMiller totally agree. I love social media. I grew up in the middle of nowhere. I had no neighbors to play with as a kid. So I made friends on the internet, grew into social media, made connections with real life friends and now that feels threatened.

Like half of the most popular posts on Mastodon right now are disingenuous comparisons of privacy practices of Threads vs Mastodon apps.

Mastodon apps don’t collect data because the instance you connect to does (like your posted content). Some collect more, some less.

Yes, Threads is predictably terrible and excessive.

Also yes, these comparisons make little sense without also looking at the instance or instances you use.

    joshgammon,

@thomasfuchs Yes! “Don't trust Meta, trust some anonymous guy who runs your instance!”

These arguments are bad. Let it launch and then show people why Mastodon is better. This isn't the way.

@Teri_Kanefield I wonder why not? If you are sad about it tanking, why wouldn't you want a similar service to rebuild that community?

    joshgammon, to random

I want this app asap and it bums me out SO BAD that Masto folks have already decided to hate it and ban it. Sure hope cooler heads prevail when launch comes

    joshgammon,

@devnull Mastodon does not have to trust Meta because they can continue to use whatever instance they want without using a single Meta product ever. I don't understand at all the purpose of cutting off what could be a huge influx of users. It's virtue signaling.

It still takes a while before Meta(P92) joins the Fediverse and the recent times we have read a lot of things from both sides

Polls are not super reliable but maybe it will give a better overall picture of what you, the people using these platforms want

The result will not be the definite outcome for us but I do take it into heavy consider because I love you all very much!

"Would YOU want to federate with Meta's new platform?"

    joshgammon,

@stux to me, it makes no sense to cut off so many people for no real reason.

    joshgammon,

@octofloofy @stux but it's the people who are punished. i don't think that's an appropriate response
