Just a warning observation for our own government... Don't support independent, powerful private militias and contractors, like Blackwater.

kjr,

@petergleick hopefully democratic countries learn somethink about the last events and constraint the use of contractors yo very specific tasks. And combat should not be one of them.

@JimmyB @ophiocephalic @jdp23 @mastodonmigration @smallpatatas I don't see that they are doing something to get trust back. Eben something simple like a public apology could help as a start.

It shouldn’t be an issue that some admins are taking a strong, pre-emptive stance to whilst others play a waiting game.

The great thing about the Fediverse is that we can decide to move and join an instance that aligns with our own position and values. We should celebrate this flexibility.

The one thing that will serve ’s interest is if we
instead divided ourselves to wage a destructive war of words over its plans.

It would be great if we could avoid that.

    kjr,

@stefanf28 @GrahamDowns but this hypotetic migration will be possible? As good as I know migration is not part of ActivityPub, but an own development of the Mastodon software. Why should Meta implement it in the own software?

I find @louis's take on how / may approach the Fediverse to be highly likely: https://emacs.ch/@louis/110592744496085427

    1. use a divide and conquer approach by proposing to the biggest instances to federate with them by providing money if they do
    2. follow up with the second and third steps of (Embrace, Extend, Extinguish) more efficiently thanks to the first move

I hope big instance admins are aware of this issue (this was emphasized from the start as a fragile network dynamics).

    kjr,

    @empiricism @tfardet @louis
    I don't understand

    kjr,

@empiricism @tfardet @louis I thin Meta is more intelligent... if they do something like that no one would accept and that would be contraproductive for their goals, whateber they are.

    kjr,

@empiricism @tfardet @louis License ActivityPub? Who can license it and with which rights? It is an open protocol.

    kjr,

@empiricism @tfardet @louis but... ActivityPub is not a creation of Mastodon, is older, it is a W3 protocol, like HTML, etc.
    Mastodon just uses it.
    https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

And the software of Mastodon is just a sofware which supports ActivityPub, like Lemmy, Calkey, Kbin and a lot others. Eben I don't think that Meta will open Mastodon instances, they will use their own software for it.

I agree with this take on proposals to block 's rumoured -based service. We should encourage adoption of this defederated approach, even if there is a risk that Meta will try it.

    kjr,

@paul I see, I just saw your account there.

    kjr,

@paul Hi Paul, I have another question related to it. In my case, more than defeferate the option will be just to delete my acounts in the Fediverse. I just need a little time until next werk to organize the way out of kbin, since I have a couple of responsabilities there.
I have already altetnative places, but I was curious about Nostr. I have seen your account there and I wanted to know about your opinion about it, comminities that use it, etc.

    kjr,

@paul what do you think about the actual situation?

    kjr,

@paul I am in the opposite position. I afraid the consequences of the integration of data graphs (something in which I have experience). After the federation, it will be possible during data retrieval integrate networks of people present in both platforms, match accounts, even with different names but which belongs to the same person (it is one of my professional activities, but I do only with data of dead people). That means, it gives possibilities to enrich a lot the knowledge about each individual.

    kjr,

    @paul no, Meta/Fediverse

    kjr, to internet

I'm not very sure about the consequences of Meta probably joining the Fediverse, and after I have read here a lot of posts and opinions, I would say that almost all of them are based on rumors. We don't even know what Meta is really planing, which protocols they want to use and in which extent, etc.
First of all I don't think that the target of Barcelona is to do interact (with good or evil intentions) with the Mastodon communities. They real target in my opinion is Twitter, a big social network/market, with a strong crisis due to its erratic management. Anyway I see a high potential of changes and colateral damages to our communities, and some open questions, if they decide to federate.

    1. The first one is about the federation. If several hundreds of millions of new users enter the Fediverse though a single instance, which consequences would it have, especially for small instances? It is possible to handle? I'm thinking about the size of the account table, account cull and administrative aspects.

    2. I suppose that the federated timeline will be monopolized by Meta due to the number of users they have. How can be it solved? If I good understand the concept of silencing, that would affect the searcheability of users of our instances for Meta users and opposite (that is, we would lose the maybe only aspect in which both Meta and Mastodon instances can benefit).

    3. Data privacy and data ownership. Taking in account the reputation and past activities of Meta, can we trust that our data won't be used by the company? Is it any way to protect from it? Or the only solution is not to federate? I hope there is any middle path, but I don't see it.

    4. If Barcelona uses ActivityPub, it is safe to expect that Meta will introduce modifications which are not compliant with the standard. I don't know how problematic they will be, a good candidate is to block possible migration from Barcelona to Mastodon, but I have to say that it is the last of my concerns.

    kjr, to twitter

And better if we don’t talk about youtube…

Discord, Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr have something in common and it’s not good

When looking at the recent history of many popular and highly successful online sites, there tends to be a certain trend they’re all following: rampant corporate greed butting heads with its original core mission and its user base, all of which eventually leads to major issues for the site.
Several sites in question — Discord, Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr — all share that same fate, despite having very different purposes and suffering through a dissimilar series of events that led to their downfall or tipping point. And, they’re proof that most businesses will eventually hit a point in which management will decide to push profit margins and use bizarre and brutal methods to squeeze money out of it. The horrors of capitalism.

    null, to internet

I think instance admins should leave it to their users to block (or not). All the tooling is already there; it's very easy for a user to block an entire domain.

As a user, I will definitely block.

    kjr,

    @darius @null
Just a question, maybe you can help me to understand it. After I read your post, I search for answers in the documentation of Mastodon, and I found that as a user, I can block other users or a domain, but with different results
    https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/#block
That means, when I block a user, I don't get her/his data and she/he doesn't get my data.
But if I block a domain, that means that I silence it, I don't see the data and that from the blocked domain my data is accessible, is it right? That mean, that if as a user I block the instances of Meta, that wouldn't prevent Meta to access my data.
    Have I understood well?
The only possibility to block effectively Meta in Mastodon is if the administrator defederates Meta?
    Thanks a lot!!
