Upgraded to Mastodon 4.1.4 without incident. 🐘

Upgraded to 4.1.3 without incident.

FYI, CVE-2023-36460 allows for remote code execution via a well-crafted toot.

For those people NOT on Infosec.exchange - during tomorrow’s maintenance to apply the new mastodon security patch, I will be enabling authorized_fetch. I have tried this on several prior occasions and got a LOT of unhappy feedback from people who browse our timeline through various mobile apps without having an account. The time is right to change that finally make that change and so if you access the Infosec.exchange timeline in this manner, you will see breakage, and for that I apologize.
✌️

null,

@bscabl @jerry Thanks Jerry. I just read this article and it mostly cleared things up for me:

What is the hashtag that you would recommend artists to use to say that their art is not created with AI?

@victor @jase Respectfully I would recommend taking a deep breath. Sometimes it's better to not respond.

I just wasted 10 minutes reading all the back and forth and it's mostly a personal dispute at this point? Please don't burn down your communities over this. Let users decide what to block.

    null,

@victor I was addressing both of you, not one of you specifically. I'm not trying to cast blame.

My suggestion to let users decide was more "let users use the domain block function individually" and less "run a poll and apply the majority vote server-side". The former option is objectively better because it allows for either decision to be honored by users. Defederation by admins is an extreme action that should be a measure of last resort.

I think instance admins should leave it to their users to block (or not). All the tooling is already there; it's very easy for a user to block an entire domain.

As a user, I will definitely block.

    null,

@darius Interesting. Can you elaborate or point me toward documentation?

Ok, here are the free Pride backgrounds (as added to mine and other's profile commissions).

They are for the iPhone, iPad 11”, iPad 12.9", 1080p, 4K and Ultrawide, and there's also a square version in there too.

They will of course work on other platforms, just pick the size closest to your device!

Hey @ivory @todd is there a way to hide boosts on the Home timeline on Mac? The Filters page seems to be missing the "Rules” section that enables this on the iPhone client. Is there a workaround (like a hidden keyword I could add as an exclusion)?

Gee do you think there is usually a lot of cleanup from the EDC folk or what? This was in my hotel room waiting for me when I checked in.

    null,

@Stoneycase @mrcompletely @LostReflector If "bio" is short for "biohazard", they may be referring to sharps (needles). They do make medical grade bags that are less likely to get punctured, leak, poke anyone handling the trash, etc. Definitely reads as if they've seen some shit. 💉

The number of times per day I pick up my phone to do something, get distracted by notifications and shiny apps, put the phone down and realize I didn't do the thing... it's growing.

Someone built a bridge that allows you to use @ivory to connect to , and it actually works. Some things are predictably missing, like notifications, but for just browsing your timeline it works fine.

    https://skybridge.fly.dev

    null,

After using it all day, happy to report that Sky Bridge works pretty well.

    Working:

    • home timeline
    • mentions
    • profile pages
    • follow/unfollow
    • notifications tab

    Broken:

    • push notifications
    • search
    • what's hot
    • no boosts in timeline
    • threads

Overall... not bad. It will obviously be much better with native @ivory support.

It's crazy how much I prefer the Ivory experience over these platforms' native apps.

still has a weird vibe though! Can't fix that with an app. 😆

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

    null,

@volkris @louis @downey I don't think it's fair to play grammar police on one message pulled from Discord. That entire channel is full of half-baked, poorly formatted stream-of-consciousness messages from everyone trying to type as fast as possible before the conversation moves on. Having said that, I don't agree with Gargron either. But I understand where he's coming from. This thing is his baby, and it hasn't taken off in comparison to other services, and I think it's rational to examine why.

Well, I just ordered my first new desktop PC in at least 22 years (!!!). 13900K + RTX 3060 (Edit: I've had other machines in the meantime, either used desktops or new laptops, but no new desktop).

Now, it comes with basic RAM (2x8GB), but I'm going to ugprade that myself.

4x32GB DDR5-5200 CL36, or am I going overkill and should I therefore only get 4x16GB?

    null,

@mookie @jbqueru If you're going to play around with LLMs or Stable Diffusion or any of that, definitely go big. RAM hogs.
