@mahryekuh friendliness. A while ago i tried to use a blogging tool and had a difficult time using it as it acted wrong due to wrong input, but didnt tell the reason for acting wrong was my wrong input.
i got the explanation that my input was wrong in their forum.
So i asked if that behavior is intentional / unavoidable or an error that can be fixed. With the intention that i would try to fix it unless experienced developers tell me it’s hard/impossible/not desireable to change…

@mahryekuh the answer i got was i should in the very first place be grateful that i gad been given such a great software for free and stop complaining.

besides that i had nothing to thank for so far as i didn’t get to use the thing as it was hard to figure out how i also wasn’t motivated anymore to contribute to a project were the main developer sees every hint for errors in their software as a personal attack.

@nicorikken i‘m not sure if i understand the message exactly…
to me it sounds a bit more like they cannot find an institutional/organizational owner to whom they can hand it over than technical server hosting.

A voluntary peer review system, but for pull requests. Instead of throwing money around, having meta discussions on how to run FOSS better, keep it simple. A group of people, including some real experts for the truly weird cases. Let’s call it the s-express (security express, and yes, when you remember the song, all the better). When you as maintainer receive a pull request that looks dodgy, you can forward it to s-express, who will take a look and report back with a first assessment in 24 hours

assuming most of these things require deep knowledge of the whole project the code to be checked runs in i think it will be difficult to create a Team with finite amount of members that can check such things in not too long time so they can say it’s 100% ok.
so it will always be better to say “this is unclear and hard to understand - please make a new Pull Request that is easier to understand” directly inside the project.

Ah, obviously. only gets along with if the latter is using the iptables backend (not the higher performing nftables default).
The backend is depreciated and slated for removal.

And of course there's no error message if configured "incorrectly", just random breakage that one then gets to debug!

I hate computers. I wish I was good enough at something else.

@larsmb aaaaactually it’s not computers doing these things but people who make software…. but then „i hate people“ sounds so negative ;)

(good luck finding another job/area where you’re not haunted by bad software… actually in most jobs it hits harder, you have less influence to change something and get paid worse - but let me know, i take it immediately)

@augieray actually, here in Germany they dropped all these measures already more than a year ago.
You don’t even get tested anymore anywhere, so theres nothing to see here…

This is accompanied by reports of record work absence numbers in 2023 due to mysterious „respiratory way infections“ and bad effects on economy…

It’s so important to be realistic.
