it's the year 2024 and USA media still doesn't get there are negros latinoamericanos and that our negrura and negritud are not less than African American blackness and negritude.

lmgenealogy,
@lmgenealogy@mstdn.ca avatar

@fifilamoura @blogdiva To be fair, people in America generally have a very limited understanding of anything outside the US. (This is not because they're bad people or congenitally ignorant, it's because they're taught nothing else, and the resources for learning are not considered worth producing.)

lmgenealogy,
@lmgenealogy@mstdn.ca avatar

@eyesquash @fifilamoura @blogdiva Oh, definitely. People in the UK and Continental Europe have no concept of the spaces involved. You can cross three or four European countries in the time it takes to move from one state to another; if someone doesn't have money for planes, it makes much more sense to go see another part of the US.

Had to drop out of my online tai chi class this morning because the dog simply would not leave me alone. You would think he hadn't seen me in years, not just a few hours. So I loved on him for a while. Apparently that was all he wanted, because this is him now.

    @tanquist @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I felt the same way until recently. My son doesn't need huge accommodations, but he's had enough major misunderstandings with NT bosses (was unfairly fired), classmates (was reported to campus security), etc., that we've finally decided having a diagnosis might be helpful. (The autistic community seems to respect self-diagnosis, for which I am hugely grateful. But the NT world wants a doctor's note.)

    On Substack’s Nazi Problem, and Ours

    Happy New Year! We are off to a depressing start with a reflection on how to navigate the moral quandaries of social media extremism and tech bro idiocy – and a plea to my readers to stick with me through it all.

    @aristeon89 @accretionist @tzimmer_history I'm anti-capitalism, but I contribute financially to my server. How can they run things if people don't contribute? Money itself is not the problem; using exploitation to make money you don't need is the problem.

    lmgenealogy,
    @lmgenealogy@mstdn.ca avatar

    @aristeon89 @accretionist @tzimmer_history @_chris_real Yes, I find that almost any site will have some of this. If you venture an opinion (whatever it is), you will inevitably get responses from people who are not really interested in debate or discussion. In some ways it was easier when we were forced to disagree in person, because basic civility required that we stay quiet if we had no willingness to listen respectfully - even if we disagreed.

    My wife lost her mother this year back in February and I lost my dad in July 2021. Both to cancer. Her mom after the 1st battle, my dad after his 3rd battle.

    While I always cherished family, I never thought I'd be in this boat, losing two very special individuals within 19 months of each other.

    Family is now the top most important thing in my life, as it can happen quicker than you imagine.

    I asked someone what evidence he's found for a particular genealogical link he made; he pointed me to Geneanet. This person is rightly skeptical of Ancestry trees as sources, but apparently he'll accept Geneanet - even though a quick check of the Geneanet information showed its source to be (surprise!) Ancestry family trees. Sigh.

    Can anyone in the area recommend an inexpensive service - either land line or a very inexpensive (not ‘smart’) cell? We’ve kept our Chicago mobile service because it’s most cost effective for us, but it means that anyone here who wants to call us has to make a long-distance call. We’d like to have a local number to give out just for incoming calls.

    I had no idea was a thing (or I just forgot about it--either way, thanks, @KydiaMusic for the notice! lol) so due to my choice in username, I feel obligated to share a little about my experience. 😁

    So here's the heavy shit: It's estimated that kids with receive over 20,000 more negative messages/corrections than neurotypical kids by the time they are 10 years old. That's not an insignificant number on paper, but living it is something else entirely.

    I was diagnosed at 21 years old. When someone goes undiagnosed that long, it means that they've internalized more than a few stories they've been told about themselves. "I'm stupid," "I'm lazy," "I'm a failure," "I'm afraid of success," "I can't do anything right," and other fun fables. This is a quasi-universal experience for us because it's not just "hard" to avoid internalizing that. It's not the same as having a bully tell you you're a sack of crap every day at school; it's everyone in your life--friends, teachers, your parents. When the people that love you most in the world are fed up with you on a daily basis, it wreaks havoc on your self-esteem.

    Now here's the truth about ADHD: Yes, it's a disadvantage in school, at work, and in our relationships. The fact is, however, that having an ADHD brain is not the problem. ADHD will only remain a disability while the world continues to be disabling to us.

    The ADHD brain is wild. It's untamed. We're out-of-the-box thinkers. We're creative. We're perpetual students and teachers. We're passionate, excitable, bright, and lively people. ADHD brains are typically charismatic and have a veritable toolbox of skills and acquired knowledge. We're often great in a crisis and can think fast on our feet when put in a corner. Our brains actually take in more information than neurotypical brains, and while it can be intensely overwhelming at times, it also means we are surprisingly observant and skilled multi-taskers. In fact, studies have shown that, despite our "scattered" nature and difficulty directing our attention, we can be given a task in a room full of distractions and not only complete the task more efficiently than our neurotypical counterparts, but we can recall more details about the distractions and environment afterward.

    All this is to say that there is a real need for in our world, because have so much to offer but so many of us don't get anywhere near what we need to thrive. We need parents and teachers to be curious about us, not judgmental. We need leadership at school and at work that is knowledgeable about our condition. We need accommodations to be accessible to us, if not baked into more systems for everyone. We need timely diagnoses, especially for girls/women, people of color, and intersectional folks who are all systematically under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, and ignored.

    Anyway, thank you for reading. Sincerely. Go give an ADHDer a hug. Peace and love. 🤙

    @ADHDefy @KydiaMusic I was told that the reason I couldn't focus well enough to drive safely was that I was afraid of growing up. Which I most definitely wasn't. Oh, and I didn't get along with my mother. (That was based on the fact that I kept interrupting her. Which is a classic sign of ADHD.) At least my parents understood, which is more than a lot of people have.

    Working on my CV as I prepare for a job search. I'm a . My skills are . . . esoteric, I suppose. (Obsolete is the word I use when discouraged.) There are companies/services out there that would value them, but it's hard to find these entities and I'm at a bit of a loss where to look. In the past, the right jobs have just kind of found me. It would be great if that happened again, but I can't rely on that and we need an adequate income. Wish me luck.

    Day one of symptoms (Tuesday) I took a COVID test which came up negative (bottom). I was absolutely sick af, hot flashes, heart palpitations, headache, etc. But negative for COVID.

    Today I -finally- got an instant positive on a rapid test on day 4 of sickness. At this point I almost feel well enough most people might not think I'm sick, and if I had a boss, they'd probably tell me to be in the office breathing on folks.

    The false negatives are very real.

    @nullagent I figure, if you feel horrible, stay home, wear a mask, avoid people. Even if what you have doesn't turn out to be covid, it just makes sense to assume it might be.
