Today’s movies is Home Sweet Hell (2015) starring Katherine Heigl, Patrick Wilson, and Madison Wolfe.

Here’s the description:

In this black comedy, Don and Mona are the perfect marriage. But when Mona learns that Don cheated on her, she will prove that she is not above murdering the competition to preserve her domestic bliss.

I’ve postponed this moment but it’s happening. No, I don’t want to watch this. Having seen the trailer, it looks every manner of awful.

But since I’m a masochist, this is what I’m doing during my Saturday afternoon. Other people do actual fun things like visit a bowling alley or go for a nature walk. Me, I watch terrible Katherine Heigl comedies.

Honestly, I have nothing against Katherine Heigl. Quite the opposite. Sure, I’ve seen her movies but she had to make them.

Now I haven’t seen this movie yet, so perhaps I’m being unfair. iMDB scores this a 5.5. Maybe it’s not that bad. But then on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 5% positive rating. 😓

Nevertheless, I’m going in. Wish me luck.

michaelgemar,

@atomicpoet Heigl movies tend to be pretty dire.

michaelgemar,

@atomicpoet I’m amused that you keep using the name of the actor instead of the character, because all this accords with my view of Heigl.

michaelgemar,

@atomicpoet The choice makes obvious sense, but it just tickles me when I see “Katherine Heigl has murdered a woman with a hammer”. Like, yeah, I suppose I’m not surprised, given what the gossip rags say…

#ICYMI (as I did), this is an excellent op-ed by @cstross on the politically & ideologically-loaded background of the cult of unfettered tech optimism & its billionaire bros.

As Charlie says, science fiction is fundamentally just entertainment & often highly derivative, not the philosophical blueprint for the future of humankind.

If an extraterrestrial civilization ever does visit Earth, will they:

michaelgemar,

@lauren I have a very hard time believing that a civilization capable of interstellar travel would need our planetary resources.

Imagine really caring what gender someone is. The only reason you would really care is if you intend to treat one gender in a different way than the other.

"I don't know what to call them!"

Call them by their goddamn name.

michaelgemar,

@RickiTarr I really don’t get why conservatives care what other people do, or call themselves. How hard is it just to be polite?

Okay experts. Last night, my nostrils were irritated so badly, I couldn’t continue, I speculate that: a) the air tube needs cleaning (but it’s not even a week old), b) the auto climate control is off so the air was too warm. Do these sound plausible?

michaelgemar,

@shoq Cleaning can be helpful. You might also check the humidity settings on the device, and ensure it’s humid enough to avoid drying.

Some recent drystone work. A complete strip out and rebuild of this garden retaining wall which failed after only 30 years due to traced stone. All stone reused and we brought in some local fieldstone too.

Super sustainable, beautiful, lasts for generations. What's not to like?

A drystone wall with lots of differently shaped and sized stones that all fit together like a jigsaw.
A run down drystone wall in front of a house, there are stones lying on the ground around it and a red bucket full of stone too.
A close up shot of a ruined drystone wall. Some stones are missing and others and falling out of the wall.

michaelgemar,

@kristiedegaris Beautiful work.

Maybe webcomics are just really hard to make but almost all of them are terrible.

The only exception is Perry Bible Fellowship. But I guess that’s not technically a webcomic since it appeared in a university paper.

michaelgemar,

@atomicpoet I take it XKCD isn’t your thing? Or Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal? I personally find both of those very funny (and thinky).

My guess as to why there are so many mentally ill people in Gotham:

The Joker and Harley Quinn fall into a giant open vat of chemicals in a factory that make them "crazy". So, I'm assuming working by the fumes of said open vat of chemicals for a long period of time would have a similar effect. All of Gotham problems have to do with poverty and infrastructure as usual.

michaelgemar,

@RickiTarr My favourite take on this (from the artist John Schrag):

The formerly abandoned Bell Labs building in Holmdel, NJ. At one point slated for demolition, the historic site has since been turned into Bell Works, a multi-use complex that was the filming location for the series Severance.

Imagine trying to get tucked into bed but your older sisters keep bugging you!

Though watching this excellent video of this ant larvae making her cocoon it really looks like her sisters are helping? Using their limbs to help provide structure for the cocoon as its formed?

Some ants cover their young in grains of sand and bits of leaves to help them spin a cocoon... but could they also just use their limbs? They are very attentive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftpQSu8t3HA

michaelgemar,

@futurebird What’s the function of the cocoon? The larva are in a safe, temperate environment, and producing silk must take a fair bit of energy.

michaelgemar,

@GottaLaff I’m surprised that anyone would think this court would allow states to say he’s ineligible. It’s not worth getting disappointed/angry over a foregone conclusion.

The weather is gloomy and I have a tent set up on my bed with a projector ready to go.

Any recommendations for things to binge watch?

Disclaimer: I watch a LOT of movies and TV shows and I've pretty much seen everything, but I’m hoping that by crowdsourcing I can find out about something I somehow missed.

michaelgemar,

@Alice If you don’t mind subtitles, the Spanish series El ministerio del tiempo (The Ministry of Time) is a fun time-travel romp, and it’s delightful to see history told through Spanish eyes (kinda like Dr Who does with Britain). It should be on Netflix.

michaelgemar,

@Alice And for comedies, while it’s not for everyone, I’d strongly recommend trying Letterkenny. It’s got a lot of incredibly smart dialogue, usually in service of crudity. (I’d strongly suggest viewing with captions on, as the dialogue is quick and the specific rural Ontario patois takes a bit of adjustment.)

For over 40 years, the Olive Garden has been a contrivance invented by General Foods that pretended to be some authentic Italian restaurant brand. The Disney folks couldn’t have done a better job of manufacturing something so artificial. I’ve never set foot in one. Have you?

michaelgemar,

@shoq My parents went to Olive Garden frequently. It’s very mediocre.

Martialis heureka is an ant first described in 2000 from Amazon rainforest near Manaus, Brazil. It's name means "from Mars" because it's so different from all other known ants.

This isn't just a new genus (which would be exciting enough) it's a whole new ant family and it's only been recognized in the past 30 years. This means that there are undoubtably more ants out there that define whole new morphologies of ants.

The 14 films that Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce starred in as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, between 1939 and 1946, are still immensely entertaining. They are, for me, the quintessential portrayals of those characters on film.

michaelgemar,

@lauren They’re very fun (although I prefer the Jeremy Brett series from ‘80s-‘90s, as I like a more prickly Holmes).

Hopefully at least a half dozen of these budding lemons will hang on and mature into full fruit. The plant is covered in them at the moment but can’t sustain them all so most of them fall off. Fingers crossed a few hang on though! 🍋

A very small budding lemon on my lemon tree. This one is further along, about the size of a small gumball.

michaelgemar,

@gedeonm They look great!

(But the way the recipe is written, it’s at least 6 ingredients. Then again, all recipes on the internet lie in some way or the other, like “cook onions for five minutes until they are carmelized.”)
