It's amusing how everyone says "doggo" but not "catto" and it's because you know your cat would eventually find out and give you that disapproving look.

Not many things in our law system actually act as a deterrent. Sentencing is not a deterrent.

Almost no-one is sitting around looking at the books and working out which particular crime might be worth the risk to try.

The closest to that are businesses and lawyers.

“Petty criminals” just aren’t motivated to exploit the system like that, so ramping up time to serve or fiddling with “punishment” doesn’t act as a deterrent.
