@MLE_online I think there might be some design challenges there in making sure it stays sturdy over time, as moving parts are always a bit more prone to breaking than solid ones.

But still, the idea of an adjustable rack like that is definitely worth investigating me thinks! :3

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

@MLE_online Though the sliding concept does seem interesting, I wonder if there's a way to take the adjustability, but make it more solid somehow.

Like, maybe move away from the sliding thing and instead something you open, lift+adjust, lock in place?

While still not the same as entirely solid construction, I think that could have more longevity and perhaps it'd do better under heavier loads?

Apparently, there's a recent research paper from France that places guidelines on screen time and social media usage of kids and teens.

There were quite a few things the paper suggests, but a positive thing mentioned was how "15 year-olds should only have access to more-ethical social media, such as mastodon"

I'm low-key excited that a paper that was requested for by French leadership actually says Mastodon (and by extension fedi) is safe and decent!

Fascinated with West European medieval foods rn.

I know I'm a nerd, shudup

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

Adding dried fruits and nuts into savory pie fillings is not something I have tried before.

Also, it sort of amazes me how historical Europe has a rep of being bland in terms of spices and such.

But in ye olde recipes, you can find references to saffron, cinnamon, cloves just to name a few spices.

Later on (I think it may have been in the renaissance) because French royalty were picky eaters and insisted on salt and pepper only, it stuck with everyone else over time as "the finer flavors" D:

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

The upshot of learning how medieval foods were like, I feel sort of weirdly blessed over how some of the ingredients that were hard to source back then are easy to come by now.

Dates being one, as for quite a while, dates weren't exactly cheap or easy to import either, so mostly it seemed nobles had access to those.

Now I can just go to the store and buy dates for my savory pie filling. :3

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

Also: common spice blends in Western Europe had like... Cinnamon and cloves.

I think if they had access to it, they would have LOVED Chinese five spice powder, as it has those AND MORE! :3

Oh yeah, and copious use of nutmeg seems to be a thing with soooooo many foods from the medieval period all the way to like early 1900's :D

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

I also heard of a technique from medieval times that involves re-introducing fat into dried meat.

I would like to learn how those worked and if there's utility in those techniques in vegan cooking.

It'd be neat if one could introduce fat into things like seitan and such to make it more delicious than before :3

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

Looking at medieval diets and such, it makes the amount of meats humans eat now seem... Absurd. 😅

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

A thing that came also as a bit of a surprise to me was how in Western Europe (especially in medieval England) hunting wasn't just something everyone was allowed to do, as practically all land was owned by nobility and royalty whom you'd have to ask permission to hunt on their lands or else risk becoming an outlaw by becoming a poacher.

miiamustang,
@miiamustang@eliitin-some.fi avatar

@thepoliticalcat Saffron, cinnamon and cloves, while they do give off sweet aromas and such, have been in use in savory foods, not just in medieval europe, but in China and other parts of East Asia as well.

While it's true that their aroma makes them well suited for desserts and other sweet things such as spiced wine/glögi, they can be seen in a large variety of savory dishes as well :3
