Microblogging like it's 2009

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.

Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @snarfed (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.

A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

@snarfed.org@snarfed.org @tchambers Holy moly "moderate people, not code" is so good. So many ideas I've wanted to express but you had the skill and knowledge to express them so much better than I'd have been able to!

I want to address some of the differences between AT and AP listed here:

(a thread)

@tess I feel like we could get at least a big part of an ideal compromise solution if there was a) a nice attractive web app to back up / archive your posts from all your current and past microblogging platforms, which you could self host or have hosted, and b) a kind of identity switchboard place, like a universal Fedifinder, to help your friends in various places reconnect with you in various other places.

@tess For the real-time communication aspect, make it community-grounded, and embrace ephemerality. For the more permanent, personal home on the web kind of stuff, make it more like a web page. They don’t need to be the same thing.

I'd really love some feedback on all this! Am I missing something? It feels like this would reduce the stakes of which instance you're on just enough to fix some of the biggest problems we have here, without rendering them meaningless like Bluesky's approach seems to.

every time US right wingers radicalize into convoys etc they get practice organizing.

we focus on how dumb or maybe scary their conspiracy driven gatherings are but the reality is that they are getting more and more vital practice with assembling, forming relationships and alliances, and connecting with needed resources — really helpful stuff for building power

@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger Very true. Another thing I was ranting about last night, it’s kind of subtler, but the way that interests and practices that should be neutral get kind of tainted. Like, I feel like there’s this whole culture and community of tools and practices for autodidacts and “sensemakers”, and it kinda tilts into this “coy right" cluster with Joe Rogan and rationalist Substackers.

Hey if you went to please consider signing this alumni statement demanding the administration end its complicity in Israel's bombardment and occupation of Palestine. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfJM8G2-WnHR4Gslga4Nkw4akY3wK9Y-Rm5sNsuyrkkqmUdEg/viewform . /cc @oberlin

misread "antiwork" as "antiwoke" and folks, I think this calls for a browser extension. (To substitute it in the other direction)

Say what you will about de-growth, but this whole “every investment needs to be a guaranteed lottery ticket” thing really doesn’t seem to be working out

An app/system I’d like:

  • People on a team at an event can upload media (photos & video) from the event, and everyone on the team can see the media in real time
  • There’s a group-editable description for each photo, and a space for comments/reactions
  • If there’s a livestream for the event, there’s a real time machine transcription of that livestream, and it’s easy to hop between the media and the time in the transcript when it was captured

Is there a good iphone app for just tracking consumption of a few user-specified things (water, protein, fiber) but not like a whole calorie counting thing?
(pretty sure the answer is yes because I've seen so much stuff like this, but app store search sucks)

I have described bluesky as a "mastodon instance in denial" and I largely stand by that. If everyone on Bluesky mass migrated to a Mastodon instance there wouldn't be an issue, and I think we would all be better off. That would also be by default "opt out" for most instances here.

misc, (edited )
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger We could do more to emphasize instances as communities, but then we have to deal with the fact that this forces people to make important choices from the start, before they’re meaningfully informed of all their implications - and also, provide more structures for legible communities (with their own norms) across instances, to reduce the problems of context collapse, culture clash, annoying replies, etc.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger In general I want people to define their allegiances around meaningful human communities not artificial boundaries. That’s what appealed to me about Snarfed’s “moderate people, not code” essay. We need better ways to define those meaningful communities within and across protocols, and that necessarily involves reducing the relevance of those less important boundaries. Not sure this is the best way to do that, but I appreciate the impulse.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger Absolutely. The way I’ve structured it in my mind is, we haven’t really figured out the ideal way to do that yet, so the best thing we can do is hold open the space where it’s possible to experiment, and make that space more conducive to such experiments. My intuition is that small-b bridging the communities of Mastodon and Bluesky is helpful to that endeavor.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger See, I love that, and want to see more of it. And also! I think that the design of the software itself could be more democratic, and we can make structures that harness the creativity of people who participate in these communities and don’t code. And! Instances as commonly implemented are kind of a fundamentally awkward container for community that’s basically transparent to most people, and increasingly so (as a design decision by Mastodon gGmbH)
