I think is spot on. The culture has changed (and Apple doesn’t see it). But also Apple’s place in the culture has changed and it is just another tech giant. I would argue, though, that’s down to Apple itself, and its behaviour. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/09/dhh-crush

@jannem @ianbetteridge The weirdest thing for me was the doll with its eyes bulging out. That was straight up horror. There’s a cultural precedent for guitar smashing and paint exploding. That could almost be passed off as some kind of rock-and-roll ethos. But it feels like they went out of their way to be explicitly mean spirited.

I want "unconference" type things — physical and virtual — that intentionally include Mastodon users who want to hack on it but aren’t coders. With help getting started with skill building, and lots of discussion on community design, management, & moderation. I really believe this is a big part of the way forward.

Getting by without an optimal task management system: mildly stressful all the time
Finding an optimal task management system: intensely stressful until you succeed

This feels like a special case of a general problem https://mastodon.social/@misc/112400509278039901

I'm pissed off that the confident predictions of X's inevitable bankruptcy never came to fruition.

First Hassan, now Klippenstein. Real bummer to see a new wave of leftists not merely sticking by Substack, but hitching their wagons to it from the start.

One thing Mastodon (or a fork) could do to win some users over from Bluesky, is support taking your account private. It's wild that X and Threads are the only big post-Twitter microblogging platforms that allow this.

Thinking of setting up a instance for events. I have no experience doing anything like this but it seems like a good learning project? Any advice? https://gancio.org

Exciting news, the #FreshPond Beer Garden is coming back on Friday! Possibly the most charmingly uncool beer garden in the #Boston area, and therefore my favorite. #CambridgeMA

I don't see a lot of TV ads nowadays but I'm in a bar right now and I'll be damned if every single ad doesn't look like AI.

How do we start campaigns in every city to get official government offices and officials to stop posting exclusively on X?

The Democracy Center in near is being closed for renovation in July, and there are concerns it might be a pretext for it being closed for good. Two community meetings are happening on 4/11 and 4/15. Show up and support! More info: https://mailchi.mp/5183620b572f/dc-update

There are so many map-based apps that should be pretty simple to implement and yet haven't been (afaik)

  • Chances of rain along your bike route for different start times
  • Given a route, best rated restaurants that don't take you far away from that route, for pick up orders
  • Best restaurant to meet up for two parties, that requires them to travel a roughly equal amount

The journalists went to Bluesky, the politicians and orgs went to Threads, and when bridges are fully implemented, Mastodon will be the best place to have it all.

EDIT: Think I'm good, thanks @nyquildotorg & @jonny for the pointers!

I'd like to find a way to automate it so that people on a social media team can fave tweets and those automatically get compiled into a google sheet. I see github has some Selenium X scrapers that could be useful, but none of them seem to have an option to load someone's faves. I guess I could try to figure them out and retrofit this myself.

Bluesky was short term disastrous for the potential of Mastodon as a Twitter alternative but in the end it might have been necessary. This place wasn't ready, and journalists and left activists were much better able to form a functional ecosystem there. When we can share content from there back here it's gonna be so good.

We need to make (more) things on the fedi that aren't available elsewhere, that meet needs of specific communities that are still stuck on X.

@knizer Sorry, missed this! So, this post was inspired by, on one side, a problem I see of unmet demand, and on the other, intriguing new projects, and a kind of tantalizingly narrow gap between them.

To get more specific, right now I'm laser focused on how to get the activist left less attached to X. It's one thing to try to narrow the gap on stuff people still use as excuses to stay there - breadth and speed of information, mostly. (1/7)

Update: internet back - apparently our Comcast cable modem was ancient and needed replacement. But I have a new problem now. The router’s built-in wifi is a bajillion times faster than my external wifi router. But it’s at the far end of the apartment, and the range sucks. And more to the point - wtf, the router is a Wirecutter recommendation from less than a year ago.
