i'm thinking about instance migration again. strongly considering hachyderm.io, they seem to be a super welcoming and active community! seems like they are very transparent with how they run things, too.

seems like the migration itself isn't hard, but my understanding is that my posts/toots won't follow me. no huge loss, i'm not that prolific of a tooter, and i guess i can always re-publish pics of my cat.

has anyone moved their account to a new instance and regretted it? any hugely positive or negative outcomes? i'd love to hear how it went for you!

    happy saturday! up, and made myself a . hoping to be productive today, at least a little bit.

    now that we’re in the new place, i really need to find a decent local (not starbucks) . anyone in west have a favorite coffee shop they could point me towards? there’s a starbucks in walking distance, but i try not to patronize them for… several reasons.

    today at work, i got some work done on one of our databases. our users use this to keep track of the accounts we work.

    i had to make a form that the user fills out to log activity for a given account, and when they click “submit”, it adds the data to a table, and that data is also displayed on another form along with other information about that account.

    i had to limit the amount of characters allowed by this “activity logger” form, and i figured out how to code a character counter that updates as you type. and once you exceed the character limit… it turns red!

    y’all here on mastodon are awesome coders, but i’m pretty new at all this, and self-taught. i am over the moon with something as simple as a character counter in microsoft access.

    a quick , because i have strong opinions about this: if you use a pod-based machine in a workplace or other communal area, do you open the machine and take your used pod out after you make your coffee? or do you leave it for the next person to find when they go to make their coffee?

    next milestone in the saga of this move: my is officially unpacked, plugged in, and fully functional. still have to set up a few more odds and ends to make my home office feel “homey” again, but this is a great first step.

    hello all! i've been on for almost a month apparently (wow, really?), and i'm happy to report that this is really starting to feel like it's my new online community. i like it here.

    now when i registered, i was less familiar with how work and what it really meant... i picked one that seemed relevant to my interests (techhub.social), and on the one hand, i feel like it doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot because of federation.

    but people seem to have strong opinions about their instance! i don't have any issue with techhub, but this itself isn't really what makes me feel like i'm part of the greater mastodon community, so to speak. it just happens to have "tech" in the name.

    all this to say, does anyone have any insight on whether it's worth it for me to migrate to a different instance? pros/cons? suggestions for a particular instance?

    or maybe i'm overthinking it, and i just stay on techhub since i can still see the rest of the from here!

    i think most people would look at me and say i’m thin. i think that’s relatively true, and i don’t have any severe body image issues or anything like that. but i have noticed some… changes, over the span of just a few short years, and especially over the last 6 months or so.

    i used to very comfortably fit into jeans with a 30” waist as recently as a year ago, but now my new 34” jeans (bought because my old jeans just straight-up don’t fit anymore) are feeling really snug. will i be wearing 36” jeans next month? at this rate, likely yes.

    almost certainly it’s my sedentary lifestyle. i don’t eat terribly, but i don’t go out of my way to eat healthy either. and now that i’m a couple years past my 30th year, my metabolism is starting to slow down and i need to make a conscious effort to do something about this.

    i’m using for mastodon on my iphone, and i’ve noticed that non-iphone emoji don’t display. for example:

    i think that’ll parse for y’all as the logo, right? for me it’s just the word “fediverse” with a colon on each side.

    i’m unclear on whether these are mastodon-specific emoji, or instance-specific. it’s not the end of the world if ivory can’t display them, but it would be nice to have. am i doing something wrong, or is this maybe a future feature?

    these are some of the earliest photos i have in my phone of our o’malley. we got him around dec ‘16 if memory serves. we got him from the SPCA in raleigh. he has always been such a friendly and mild cat. i love him so much.

    apparently, i haven’t done a proper yet!

    i am misha. i’m in , USA, but only because my wife’s family is from this area. i am from florida originally, and i hate what the fascists are doing to the place.

    my o’malley is my work-from-home co-pilot and best buddy. there are some pics on my page!

    i enjoy , but i don’t normally consider myself a gamer. it’s just a fun way to pass the time. sometimes i play them on the that i built, which was a super fun project.

    i work in mortgages, but i’m the guy in our department that does all the macros, data analysis, some database work, etc., mostly because i’m the only one in our group that understands any of it.

    i’m introverted and nerdy, but am seeking to expand my social circle. i don’t usually start conversations, but get me talking and i can go for hours. my politics are left and progressive; i don’t like to “be political”, but the world we live in is political and we have to make it better.

    But that’s not the point. The point is that millions of people across the planet are exploring based communication now. THAT is the big opportunity and success.

    @jwildeboer i don’t think the will replace or kill reddit fully, but it has proved that it can be a viable alternative, and for me at least, having viable alternatives is a crucial part of autonomy. i don’t want to use reddit, and i don’t want reddit to use me, so i consider it a victory that i have the opportunity to bring myself into a new community apart from reddit. and i think a lot of people feel the same way.

    y’all, today has been a day. between stress at work and moving to a new apartment in something like 9 days, i am finding it difficult to motivate myself to move a muscle, let alone do anything productive.

    how are y’all? is everyone else holding up okay in the face of all this social media shakeup, and anything else you might have going on?

    @east thank you! we’ve done like… 10% of the packing we need to do. to be honest, we’ve thrown out more things than we have packed. you don’t realize how much junk you accumulate.

    i thrive on coffee, i don’t think i could ever drop it. i have tried to switch to tea instead of maybe a third cup, though. it’s just not the same.

    i hope we see continued growth of this new community. i’m excited for it.
