Hi, I’m Noah. I’m a dad to a lovely kiddo I will always refer to as “the zergling” in the interest of letting them choose whether they want their life on the internet or not. All opinions here are obviously my own and definitely not from one of the three ferrets who take turns as the captain of my brain-ship. I post about technology, politics, racism, food, games, etc. I’m all over the map. When I had free time I played #ttrpg. Nowadays, Final Fantasy XIV as time permits. #nobridge

Lauren Boebert says she won’t be lectured about gun safety by people who think the “AR” in “AR-15” stands for “Assault Rifle.”

OK cool, it’s “ArmaLite Rifle” now you can go lecture her.

The data gathered during the assault weapon ban between 1990 and 2004 was that higher prices and lower availability did indeed lower crimes committed with those specific weapons, however they increased for other firearms. Total numbers didn’t really start to decrease until close to the expiration in 2004.

I am doing a live show in New York again today, for the first time in like a year, and it’s Buffy themed. Please send me Buffy GIFs or quotes to get me in the zone!

I will also accept Angel.

You know those magic eye posters that were everywhere in the '90s? I feel like if we want to get rid of AI copying artists, we just need to go back to that being the exclusive medium people work with for a bit. Maybe we can mix and match techniques - a magic eye poster that contains a buffer overflow. Find Waldo somewhere within this picture but first solve this P vs. NP problem.

I grew up sleeping with a blanket, not a comforter, so having a duvet was a new thing for me when I met my wife all those years ago. One thing that always frustrated me was how they tangle anything else washed with them inside them when they go into the dryer. I can't believe it took me this long to realize but, just button it closed before it goes into the wash and bingo, no clothes stuck inside when dried. I assume this is common knowledge but figured I'd share just in case others are like me.

Remember, this year October 31st falls on Friday the 13th...which will feature a full moon and a solar eclipse, as well as a bank holiday. This will not happen again for another 382 Einstein-Rosen Bridges. I bet only 6.8233% (repeating of course) of you have the courage to favorite and boost this.

Lots of conversation and swirl over the past few days. Here's what hasn't changed, and isn't going to change:

  • A space that is safe for white queer people, and not safe for Black queer people, is not a "safe space for queer people."
  • We will make the Fediverse safe for people of all backgrounds
  • We will make it safer, easier, and cheaper, for admins to keep the most toxic abuse away from their users
  • We will take our time designing blocklists and composable moderation.
monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@mekkaokereke What's been infuriating to me as I watch some of those conversations is just how often people will respond with assertions about the universal accessibility of the fediverse to all groups despite the fact that the post is literally about how that person's shared experience is one of inaccessibility.
"The fediverse isn't working for group X right now"
"Well I'm in group Y and it works great."
"Yes...because you're not in group X?"
Just...why is this so hard to understand?

Dear Raistlin,

You seem particularly...attached to Fistandantalus. It’s not healthy dude. Literally. Figuratively. Your pick. I think it probably best if you don’t spend as much time together. He’s a bad influence. I know what y’all had in the past was “magical” but let it go man. It’s time to move on. Also you have jaundice.

    @ryanhoulihan I did that last year and...oof...it's not good. For the one I bought, the filter part of mine is a white plastic cylinder that goes inside the filter portion of the shower head. If your part of the US has lots of manganese in the water like mine does, just go ahead and turn out the filter into the trash and don't look at it too closely. It's not pretty.

    If you want to delete all of your posts on twitter then you can do it through Redact.Dev. Pass it on.

    monkeyninja,
    @monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @BlackAzizAnansi If folks have a few bucks to toss toward the redact.dev developers by subscribing to a plan, that would be great too. Some of the old-school free Twitter deletion services like Tweet Sweeper shut down because Musky made access to the API a paid service so even small side projects that were just designed to cleanup shitposts over time would have required thousands of dollars a month to keep online and available for folks to consume.

    It really is a shame that shitty guys have fundamentally ruined the phrase "boys will boys" because I just witnessed three guys arguing over which cheese would have the best aerodynamic properties and then proceeded to buy 80 dollars of cheese while discussing whose parent's yard they could build a trebuchet in. Guys...we need to do better. I want people to think of cheese-based siege weapons when someone says that, not all the other things that come to mind.

They’re going to Google things and check StackOverflow. How we all comport ourselves in answering questions as the folks who ostensibly know what we’re doing has a tremendous influence on their ability to stay in the game. We were all newbies once. Be kind, don’t be a jerk.

    "Lost boys"

    No. These are adult men who are making a conscious choice not only to engage in genocidal rhetoric, but to insert themselves into electoral politics to make that genocide a reality.

    Stop infantilizing white men to excuse their violence.

    I grew up in VA, I knew tons of racists when I was young. You don't end up palling around with that group because you're a "lost boy," you end up palling around with that group because you're a racist.

    I don't know how to describe it but this post 2016 society has kinda broken me in a way that I can't describe. Yes, I get it, "Lol things have always been bad" blah blah blah, but this dystopian shit is something different. I think the combination of just seeing how comfortable people have become just being outright cruel and bigoted combined with the apathy and just flat out resignation of folks who may be decent, but they've just normalized all of this bullshit killed my youthful spirit.

    monkeyninja,
    @monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @BlackAzizAnansi There’s a lot of awfulness that came out of the last few years but I love that you talk about it openly and honestly. I don’t know how you grew up but for me personally I was taught to just ignore the negative emotions, that if you’re a man you need to just keep a stiff upper lip and keep moving. I don’t anymore though, in part because other men are normalizing other choices. Things are awful but that right there is pretty fantastic.

    Right-wing media personalities are celebrating the US women’s soccer team’s loss to Sweden & ultimately that is all you need to know about Republicans. The team used their position in the spotlight to call out systemic inequalities, which is anti-American per Republicans and thus they’d rather see the team lose than win while critical of injustice. Apparently the only way to be American to Republicans is through performative cruelty and masturbatory pearl-clutching.

    One thing my black friends used to tell me growing up was that white people are FASCINATED by black folks hair and they would get random people touching them. It never happened when I was around until today. I’m in line in the store. This young woman on self checkout with a big beautiful Afro and this dude just ruffles her hair. She doesn’t even look up but I saw her tense up. So I lean over and ask “Hey man do you know her?”

    monkeyninja,
    @monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

    He just kind of gawked at me and I hadn’t really planned ahead or anything so I just said, “You really shouldn’t touch someone without asking like that. That’s not OK.” And you could tell he wanted to say something to me but at this point now people are kind of staring so he just grabbed his bag and left. I felt weird saying anything to the woman so I just paid for my stuff and left but that was surreal. Don’t touch people without consent. How hard is that?

    sigh we're still talking about this I guess...

    Jamie Foxx didn't say something anti-semitic. He said something people thought was anti-semitic.

    Because they weren't familiar with his phrase, and he wasn't familiar with the anti-semitic dog-whistle.

    He apologized for being misunderstood, not for being anti-semitic.

    Yes, it is very good that he clarified.

    monkeyninja,
    @monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @mekkaokereke As someone who grew up Jewish in the South, I’ve never heard anyone say “They killed Jesus. What do you think they’ll do to you?” I however have had plenty of people say to my face that Jews killed Jesus. Occasionally this would preface someone assaulting me. I’m not saying you’re wrong about what he said or meant, but I hope you also see how those who have experienced violence as a result of the latter might still be upset.

    monkeyninja,
    @monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @mekkaokereke Most of my childhood friends are actually black, even went to church with their families sometimes and they were at my Bar Mitzvah 🙂.

    But part of those friendships also came with moments where I had to learn that something I said in ignorance might be taken as racist. Or that something a friend said could be taken as antisemitic.

    FWIW it sounds like he got it immediately & clarified but I can understand how some might be still be less forgiving about the situation.

    I don’t know who needs to hear this but you don’t have to wait for your company to create a DEI initiative for you to do something about your team makeup. If you have hiring authority and open headcount, you can literally prioritize creating opportunities. “But Noah, isn’t that some form of -ist?” No. In tech there is no shortage of BIPOC talent, there’s no shortage of disability talent, there’s no shortage of LGBTQ+ talent. Just a shortage of opportunity. If you build it they will come.

    @BlackAzizAnansi It’s been eye-opening for me. When I was more naive I attributed it solely to my right-leaning relatives but for every Q I come across there’s a friend on the left spouting the latest antivax nonsense and touting alkaline water as a panacea. Not just unhinged but bereft of any semblance of critical thought and logical reasoning.
