Hi, I’m Noah. I’m a dad to a lovely kiddo I will always refer to as “the zergling” in the interest of letting them choose whether they want their life on the internet or not. All opinions here are obviously my own and definitely not from one of the three ferrets who take turns as the captain of my brain-ship. I post about technology, politics, racism, food, games, etc. I’m all over the map. When I had free time I played #ttrpg. Nowadays, Final Fantasy XIV as time permits. #nobridge

Someday my child will ask me how many minutes there are in a year and is going to be really impressed that this is a fact I already know without looking it up or calculating it. The trick will be saying it without singing it.

Hey there friends, fiends, and everyone in between. Those of us of the Jewish persuasion just took a big ol' breath as we kick off what is bound to be one doozy of a Jewish American Heritage Month. So a favor if you please - keep calling out how wrong the actions of the Israeli government are, that is so crucial, but also we need you calling out antisemitism too. There's a lot of that and it's about to get a whole lot worse and we're really tired of having to be the ones to call that out.

Did Flat Earthers just see a map and get confused?

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@RickiTarr What I love about Flat Earthers is how lazy a conspiracy theory it is though. They could easily prove or disprove their own stance by hopping in a boat from Japan for 3 hours and have universally said "Nah, we're good. It's definitely flat."

(1/4) I don't really consider myself old per se, but I'll be 50 in a year and a half so I'm not exactly young either. There are so many things that have changed since I was a kid. I see so many ways in which life is better but also so many ways in which today's kids in public school have been robbed. There are classes I had that no longer exist in the US public school system anymore like wood shop or home economics.

Hey there, how’s it going? Good? Good. So…I hear that some of you who lean left don’t plan on voting, or you’re maybe planning on just not voting for Biden I think? Cool cool…quick question. What’s your plan for after Trump wins?

I’m not here to argue about two party systems. I’m not here to wax philosophical about ranked choice voting. I’m just asking what your plan is after Trump wins. Are you going to help get neighbors to safety too or is it just you and your family? What’s your plan?

Today, my implanted spinal drug pump gets refilled at home.

I get muscle relaxer Baclofen. Some have pain meds, special blend formulations and other meds.

With an implanted pump, you get constant therapy directly to the brain, much lower doses of medication than oral and better therapy.

I was on a lot of Baclofen & still immobile. It gave me mobility back.

I am so glad I can have this procedure done at home instead of having to go in for a procedure.

@paul It really is astounding to me how much of a difference it makes in the efficacy of a drug by how they're administered.

When I was recovering from the pain of the bowel perforation I had in 2012, I had a PICC line placed and it was amazing to me how much more effective pain management medications were when they were sent straight to my heart to disperse vs. just through a standard IV. It actually let me sleep for a few hours at a time.

That's amazing they can do this at home for you.

I'm really tired of reading articles about the latest ways in which Republican bigots are attempting to legislate away and prohibit the existence of transgender people. First of all, you can't. We will fight you and one way or another, you will lose. Second, they clearly have ignored history or they would know that prohibition of anything desired by the masses accomplishes nothing. We will simply make our own transgender people in our bath tubs.

There is absolutely no rule anywhere that says that if you make a New Year’s resolution that it has to be difficult. We’ve had a doozy of a time the last few years, cut yourself some slack okay? Maybe give yourself a couple of wins. Resolve to pet your cat. Resolve to eat a single piece of fruit over the course of the year. Resolve to listen to your favorite song or eat your favorite food. They don’t have to make you miserable. That’s a choice you get to make.

After almost 18-months on Mastodon exclusively, we need some way to have a minimum user by user-controlled, private algorithm.

I miss so much content from people I follow just because I am not online at the same time they post.

I've tried lists and use them and they help but we need more.

I've lost so many regular interactions just for not being online when someone posts.

It's almost a Mastodon deal-breaker until I think of the alternatives.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@paul That's the great/terrible plus/minus when it comes to Mastodon. It's open-source so there's nothing stopping the creation of such a thing, but the barrier for entry is steep as you have to know Ruby and then get it added to whatever version of Mastodon your instance runs (or fork it and run your own).

I've never interacted with Eugen so I don't know how amenable to suggestions he is, but could always be worth pinging him to see if such a thing is on his development roadmap.

You know…it’s really funny how the whole “The Second Amendment protects the other 26” crowd are suddenly very interested in not protecting the fourteenth amendment. Oh jeez, I wonder if they’re the same folks who claim to own guns to protect themselves from an authoritarian regime whilst simultaneously voting for the guy who literally said that he wants to enact an authoritarian regime. Nah…couldn’t be them right?

I can't recall if I shared this here or not...ah well you get to read it again if I have.

One of the key focuses with my last therapy group was around mindfulness and I was having none of it. It wasn't because I was averse to a mindfulness practice, but because it was mindfulness with a focus on positivity and at that time in my life, positivity was not only impossible but would have felt so deeply fake to me that I would have known it was a lie. The practice felt inaccessible.

REMINDER FOR
LAID-OFF & UNEMPLOYED
AMERICANS

there is no shame to use all the social services you have paid with your taxes, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A WHITE, MID/HIGH INCOME EARNER.

welfare is racialized in this country to deprive all Americans of the social services WE PAY for.

it’s imperative y’all flood social services offices because if you don't, that's why the griftocracy keeps cutting local, state & federal budgets.

so here’s what you can do after losing your job:

/1

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@blogdiva 100%. I'm white, I work in a part of tech that's usually pretty easy to find jobs in, and when I got laid off in 2014 that was the first thing I did and was so glad for those benefits. It was just after my kiddo was born, they had medical issues as an infant, and while I was only out of work for 4 months, those would have bankrupted us because I live in the US.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@blogdiva That's excellent information, thank you for taking the time to share all this!

I can maybe dig into this on my own but just curious if you have any insight into how accessible those support services are for folks in more rural areas.

That's an area I'm fairly ignorant, so I didn't know if there are certain federal mandates that place requirements on accessibility of state-run care or if folks in rural areas in red states are completely screwed.

monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi I'm Jewish and live in the South, so not well. I already don't put the menorah in the window like I used to, our celebrations are behind closed doors. My family would fade even deeper into the background. And we're some of the lucky ones. We don't "look Jewish." I can pass as just another middle-aged, overweight, cisgender, white guy. I'd have to figure out if I would be more useful staying here in the US and helping or going somewhere else and staying out of the way.

Jews are 2.4% of the U.S. population, but now somehow we’re also responsible if any Republicans get elected, even though 71% of us have voted Democratic since the 60s.

People simply can’t run out of things to blame us for.

Lauren Boebert says she won’t be lectured about gun safety by people who think the “AR” in “AR-15” stands for “Assault Rifle.”

OK cool, it’s “ArmaLite Rifle” now you can go lecture her.

The data gathered during the assault weapon ban between 1990 and 2004 was that higher prices and lower availability did indeed lower crimes committed with those specific weapons, however they increased for other firearms. Total numbers didn’t really start to decrease until close to the expiration in 2004.

You know those magic eye posters that were everywhere in the '90s? I feel like if we want to get rid of AI copying artists, we just need to go back to that being the exclusive medium people work with for a bit. Maybe we can mix and match techniques - a magic eye poster that contains a buffer overflow. Find Waldo somewhere within this picture but first solve this P vs. NP problem.

I grew up sleeping with a blanket, not a comforter, so having a duvet was a new thing for me when I met my wife all those years ago. One thing that always frustrated me was how they tangle anything else washed with them inside them when they go into the dryer. I can't believe it took me this long to realize but, just button it closed before it goes into the wash and bingo, no clothes stuck inside when dried. I assume this is common knowledge but figured I'd share just in case others are like me.

Lots of conversation and swirl over the past few days. Here's what hasn't changed, and isn't going to change:

  • A space that is safe for white queer people, and not safe for Black queer people, is not a "safe space for queer people."
  • We will make the Fediverse safe for people of all backgrounds
  • We will make it safer, easier, and cheaper, for admins to keep the most toxic abuse away from their users
  • We will take our time designing blocklists and composable moderation.
monkeyninja,
@monkeyninja@mastodon.cloud avatar

@mekkaokereke What's been infuriating to me as I watch some of those conversations is just how often people will respond with assertions about the universal accessibility of the fediverse to all groups despite the fact that the post is literally about how that person's shared experience is one of inaccessibility.
"The fediverse isn't working for group X right now"
"Well I'm in group Y and it works great."
"Yes...because you're not in group X?"
Just...why is this so hard to understand?
