Having my biennial "I should buy a Mac" wobble.

mstrkapowski,
@mstrkapowski@mastodon.online avatar

for context: I haven't owned a Mac for upwards of a decade now

@kev yeah. Windows 11 + WSL/containers when I need to do something that doesn’t run well on Windows natively.

Most of the last 10 years I’ve been on various flavours of Linux, but I’ve used Windows since getting my current laptop ~2 years ago

Just a thought - when discussing beginner developers and how to help them and what comes first - consider that I basically started again 3ish years ago.

So yeah, I knew how to use FTP and how to write HTML, CSS, and some rudimentary JS and PHP/MySQL stuff. But only at a low down hobby level. I was using Notepad++.

I remember very well - it was so recent! - the confusion I felt. New to me was git, node, npm, frameworks, ES6, and all the new CSS over the last decade. It's not long ago I was new.

mstrkapowski,
@mstrkapowski@mastodon.online avatar

@sarajw I'm pretty sure that in my first ~5 years or so of building websites and webpages (96/97ish onwards) I didn't have to touch the command line once to build + publish anything. Notepad + FTP client was all I used. Didn't look at the CLI until partway through university, and even then it was only for curiosity or coursework.

Publishing to the web has been dressed up to look far more complicated than it needs to.

I feel a blog post coming on…

@robb just done it the old fashioned way!

I’ll just quickly install this system update before I leave work… ah f***.

mstrkapowski,

@heliomass I did the exact same thing yesterday. Thought it’d only take 10 minutes at the end of the day… it took half an hour 🤦🏻‍♂️

Huh. Micro.blog cross-posting didn't work for my most recent blog post 🤔

mstrkapowski,
@mstrkapowski@mastodon.online avatar

@kev I've had mostly good experiences with it, which I think means I notice it more when it doesn't work. I might start self-hosting something like Echo to achieve the same result without relying on a 3rd-party

RSS/Atom parsing. So fun.

const link = isNotAtom
 ? feed.rss.channel.link.attr_href ?? feed.rss.channel.link'[#text']
 : feed.feed.link.length > 1
 ? feed.feed.link[0].attr_rel == "alternate"
 ? feed.feed.link[0].attr_href
 : feed.feed.link[1].attr_href
 : feed.feed.link'[#text'];

Yes I know there are libraries that can do it for me. Yes I'm choosing to do this. Yes I'm having fun while also gritting my teeth.

Coding is weird.

@sarajw I remember years back the Newsgator developers posting about how much nonsense and random issues they had to deal with parsing feeds for their service. It put me off ever writing my own parser for life!

At least you're having fun despite the tribulations. Those are some of the best projects :)

Today I got to participate in a conversation about Blocking in social spaces with a bunch of smart people including Sydette Harry and Georgia Bullen, organized by @danhon for his Hallway Track series. As usual for me in these things, I had way more thoughts than I had time to bring up, so I’m writing a few of them down here.

@revk unless there's some other overriding context, I've always understood it as:

"this <X>" = <X> this week
"next <Y>" = <Y> next week

Anyone know of good online tools that take in an RSS/Atom URL and spit out simple HTML?

I've found https://rss.bloople.net but it doesn't seem to like every feed I give it. Ditto https://nerdiedad.com/tools/rss-to-html. https://www.rssdog.com is a bit too opinionated and styles the output.

(I don't [yet...] have a server where I can host my own.)

Does anyone know of a tool that will go through all of the accounts you follow and discover their RSS feeds from sites linked in their bios? I remember there being something like that for Twitter, waaayy-back-when (so, like, 2017 or something)

mstrkapowski,
@mstrkapowski@mastodon.online avatar

@robb the thought struck me after using https://followgraph.vercel.app/ to find + follow a bunch of new accounts - it would be great to semi-automate feed discovery from social media follows

Folks need to stop sharing cool things they've added to their websites that make me want to copy what they did. I don't have enough enough time for all this 😅

@sarajw @robb @flamed I'm old enough to remember Posterous, which was literally "publish to the web by sending an email". I feel it was a brilliant idea, just at the wrong time.

All this recent talk of making getting on the indie web as easy as possible - which it should be! - has got me wondering where we draw the line between it's an app (site tool) problem and a hosting problem? Elements of both need to be thought about
