A few takeaways: 1. know what county you're in (and your surrounding counties) - this will help contextualize info in NWS watches and warnings, 2. have a plan for what to do (ways to receive info, a safe place, emergency supplies), 3. familiarize yourself with terminology (esp. watches vs warnings)

The presenter talks about watches and warnings in the context of Taco Tuesday: a taco watch means conditions are right for assembling tacos in the kitchen, while a taco warning means you need to grab your taco before someone else does. Weather alerts are similar - watches mean conditions are favorable for something, warnings mean you need to take action because something is imminent.

I don't remember all of the weather hashtags that are active on the Fedi, but there are some great bots to follow, and a combination of state & wx is pretty common, e.g., for Indiana weather, OHwx for Ohio weather, etc.

Be prepared, not scared, as they say, and look after each other.

Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

@Likewise @bookstodon you might try the Selected Shorts podcast. It's introduced me to lots of great short fiction. Typically there are 2-3 stories in under an hour.

    Random question of the day: I think I need a new helmet (the pads are all falling apart, and I have not been a huge fan of the chin strap), what are people's favorites? I'm not racing anywhere, just need a good reliable helmet for going around town. I'm pretty sure the ones we have are Target specials, LOL. I should have asked for . (Update: after determining I was using an unsafe, 2013-era helmet which was falling apart, ended up with a Bontrager WaveCel, which was the best rating in a mid-price at my local bike shop. They did have the Specialized Align II, which is very highly rated and only $50)

    A visit to the VT lab, discussion of the importance of buying from reputable dealers, and some less expensive helmets are good/a handful of expensive ones aren't great...
