Americans: please stop saying “coming this fall” for your global product releases!

It’s autumn for some. And even worse, it’s spring in the southern hemisphere! Just say the month instead. “Coming in October” is universal. Thanks ☺️

'A17 Pro' without there being a regular 'A17' chip has the same energy as when we had a 'HomePod mini' without a regular 'HomePod'.

neave,

@viticci I don’t get why they name them at all 🤷‍♂️

So Apple is claiming iMessage has less than 45 million users in Europe? Seems a bit sus. https://9to5mac.com/2023/09/04/imessage-app-store-gatekeeper-not-big-enough/

neave,

@bzamayo Hardly ever use iMessage in UK, it’s almost entirely WhatsApp

I’ve made a successful Mastodon client, I love it here but I’m still very active on X and I also love it there. People are shitting over X all days on my timeline on Mastodon but nobody cares about Mastodon on X. I would say maybe it’s time to stop shitting on everything else than Mastodon here.

TIL about wet bulb vs wet bulb globe temperatures. This stuff is complicated.

The south of the US is expecting wet bulb globe temperatures today. The combination of humidity and heat will stop the body from being able to ventilate. Without AC, even healthy people will be in danger.

Wet bulb is more absolute than wet bulb globe though if I understand it correctly. Wet bulb globe is more like the "felt" wet bulb temp. Please let me know if you have a better comparison.

neave,

@bastianallgeier Yes, as far as I understand that’s correct - WBGT is the more useful index of heat stress on humans than WBT.

Just because the media stops being interested in something doesn't mean it's not still happening.

Ottawa's air quality is incredibly bad today. Why? Quebec wildfires.

Remember that? Remember the fire? The whole climate change thing? The utter direness of it all when, for a brief time, the wind shifted and brought the smoke into New England?

Yeah, that's all still happening.

Dear web developers & designers,

Now that you know what’s coming in Safari 17 — as well as what shipped in Safari 16.2-16.5 — what do you need in WebKit next?

Which web technology that’s already been standardized is highest priority? What brand new idea do you need invented?

neave,

@jensimmons I desperately need -webkit-text-stroke but standardized with an option to outer/stroke (outline) text properly. So bored of using text-shadow hacks!

Google Chrome will soon be removing the 🔒 padlock icon from the address bar for HTTPS sites, replacing it with a menu icon instead. It’s been a long journey to finally make this paradigm shift: https://blog.chromium.org/2023/05/an-update-on-lock-icon.html

There’s a debate going on right now about whether Safari should allow users to install web apps via a web link/prompt instead of solely relying on the “Add to Home Screen” option currently hidden in the share menu:

https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255716 and https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=198673

Thanks for effort, @tomayac!

I’ve just converted a Twitter bot over to a Mastodon bot and it was an absolute breeze 😎

Mastodon’s API is wonderful to work with. If you’re using Node, I’d highly recommend masto.js: https://github.com/neet/masto.js/
