So far, are AI chatbots saving you work or giving you more to do?

Maybe the question of whether a system is governable matters more than whether it is open.

Ooh I just noticed that the PolicyKit website is much improved—nice work @axz and team! https://policykit.org/

Turns out when you build a co-op news org, you get awesome coverage of co-ops.

If you wanted to build a database/website on Notion but then instead wanted to do it in a portable, FLOSS-y way, how would you do it?

I am noticing, in a discussion on indigeneity, how my own lineage of exile, migration, and diaspora makes me more comfortable trusting trans-territorial networks than territorial states.

If you're, say, occupying space somewhere with other people, you'll need to have a way to make hard decisions—like, say, how to face attacks by fascists or police.

That's why my lab is building CommunityRule.info, a tool for designing self-governance practices, grounded in mutual aid.

What would the US do if it simply didn't have gobs of weapons to send everywhere in the world?

I have never been to a protest that didn't have its moments of cringe, of awkwardness, of appalling ugliness. You must balance that with the beauty and the bigger picture. The mess of humanity comes out in force in struggles for justice.

The establishment news always tries to exploit that mess to drown out the truth. Don't let them. Don't do it for them. Don't self-police. Just focus attention on what you want to grow.

One of the nice things about 24-hour time is that when it is 17:01, the workday is over.

This is a Star Trek reference.

I'm quoted in a @CoinDesk report on the Bitcoin halving, in which I decry the longing for financial systems beyond human control: https://www.coindesk.com/consensus-magazine/2024/04/18/this-bitcoin-halving-is-different-but-is-it-priced-in/

I'm seeing a lot of purple in interfaces lately. Not complaining, not in the least. But just curious if anyone has any insight as to if my perception is true and, if so, why.

It feels like purple is finally giving blue a run for its money.

I just had a really refreshing call with the great @mallory, and she helped me see the Threads/fediverse question in a helpful way:

The question shouldn't be

[ Threads vs. No Threads ]

The question should be

[ Just Threads vs. Everyone in the fediverse ]

If more companies/organizations/etc. were coming in and bringing their users and committing to the network, the question of Threads becomes less important. Threads will have less relative power.

Increasingly I think what Diane Ravich realized about education is right about the internet. People keep thinking that we can fix society by fixing the internet. But actually the only way to fix the internet is to fix society.

I feel bad for the person at church this morning with the "Capitalism For All" bumper sticker who had to sit there through Acts 4:32-35

"The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common."

Just saw this—my interview with the great theorist and journalist of technology Mike Masnick is up and out on the Techdirt Podcast: https://www.techdirt.com/2024/04/09/techdirt-podcast-episode-386-democratic-design-for-online-spaces/

I hugely admire Mike's grounded thinking on protocols and decentralization. This was a really fun conversation.
