We should all be demanding that our governments invest in open source like this.

Signal is a good reason (along with Wikipedia, Mastodon, and Firefox) that we need way more nonprofit tech.

Ooh, I'm super excited about two new articles that I just encountered:

"Divesting from Big Tech: Alternative Possibilities for Research and Futuring in Social Computing" by @cyberlyra @natematias https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3584931.3608436

I am grateful for people like Andreessen for continually making the job of media studies scholars way too easy by providing cartoon versions of what would otherwise be more challenging to critique.

Why do people go to jail for defrauding investors but investors don't go to jail for defrauding workers?

I just had a really refreshing call with the great @mallory, and she helped me see the Threads/fediverse question in a helpful way:

The question shouldn't be

[ Threads vs. No Threads ]

The question should be

[ Just Threads vs. Everyone in the fediverse ]

If more companies/organizations/etc. were coming in and bringing their users and committing to the network, the question of Threads becomes less important. Threads will have less relative power.

That Musk has used his platform to silence striking workers is the best argument yet for abandoning his club house. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/09/musks-x-revokes-paid-blue-check-from-united-auto-workers-after-strike-called/

Turns out when you build a co-op news org, you get awesome coverage of co-ops.

Great summary by @molly0xfff about why you don't need to read a book by an investor whose company helped ruin the internet about how his investments will save the internet.

Just saw this—my interview with the great theorist and journalist of technology Mike Masnick is up and out on the Techdirt Podcast: https://www.techdirt.com/2024/04/09/techdirt-podcast-episode-386-democratic-design-for-online-spaces/

I hugely admire Mike's grounded thinking on protocols and decentralization. This was a really fun conversation.

I wish we could even consider the frame of respect for elders, and an expectation that elders can act in a way deserving of that respect.

What if the conversation were less "can you still bench 300" to "are you a venerable elder who can trust the young and judge with wisdom"?

I have never been to a protest that didn't have its moments of cringe, of awkwardness, of appalling ugliness. You must balance that with the beauty and the bigger picture. The mess of humanity comes out in force in struggles for justice.

The establishment news always tries to exploit that mess to drown out the truth. Don't let them. Don't do it for them. Don't self-police. Just focus attention on what you want to grow.
