I’m increasingly convinced that defederation of Threads will backfires against the instances that defederate.

There is a vocal, but small, minority of users who have very strict opinions on Threads, the Fediverse and Mastodon. But they’re a minority.

The more Threads will federate, the more users who aren’t part of this minority but have to live with the consequences of its demands will ask for a different direction.

J’envisage sérieusement d’abandonner Mastodon.

Le ratio de conseils non-sollicités, de monsieurs je-sais-tout, et d’extrémistes donneurs de leçons qui prétendent régenter comment les autres doivent utiliser la plateforme, est beaucoup trop défavorable.

Il suffit d’ailleurs de voir certaines réponses à ce post pour constater la prévalence de ces comportements toxiques.

The more I experiment with #Mastodon and #ActivityPub more broadly, the more I am convinced that it’s possible to build a #Patreon replacement on the #Fediverse

Patreon is a closed platform, but it’s a key tool for many content creators to make a living out of their work: writers, video makers, podcasters, and so on

A Fediverse alternative would basically bridges a payment system with tiered access based on payment status

Even with #Zapier, I think it could already be done!

It’s baffling how consistently bad #Threads’ algorithm is

On top of a shockingly low quality coming from a company with as much resources as #Meta, the real issue is the model of its algorithm itself: it’s an opaque, one-size-fits-all algorithm. It’s a completely outdated model.

As #Bluesky shows, and #Mastodon to a lesser extent (with followed hashtags), it’s possible to give users proper control over their timeline

Ozone, #Bluesky's tool for providing moderation services to the community, is surprisingly "simple" to install.

Not everyone can install it. But all you need is a Docker-enabled server.

By comparison, installing a #Mastodon instance is a lot more complicated.

I'm currently doing some very early experimentation with a private #Mastodon profile

The idea I'm experimenting with is to offer extra content to people who have a paid subscription to my (French speaking) economics popularization newsletter

I think it’s an interesting avenue to explore. I'm sure writers can leverage the #Fediverse to make a better living without relying too much on closed platforms such as #Patreon (or poorly run platforms such as #Substack).

My experimentation of a private #Mastodon profile as a #Patreon replacement continues

Mastodon is a great place to do this, because #ActivityPub is gaining so much traction

In a couple of months, people on #Threads will be able to follow this private account

Where you build your stuff will matter a lot less with the #Fediverse

(Side note: #Bluesky is completely isolated of this trend, due to its reliance on a different protocol. Which is really unfortunate.)

First time I'm seeing a post moderated by a third party labeler in my #Bluesky feed, and it's so cool!

I subscribed to a service that labels screenshots from other platforms.

A post with a Twitter screenshot was flagged in my timeline (first image).

If flagging is not enough, I can go further and decide to completely hide screenshots (second image).

(PS: if you display any antisocial behavior because I posted something about Bluesky, you will get instant-blocked. Same with reply guys.)

I have been experimenting with #Threads since it launched in Europe at the end of last year

On top of a very, very, very bad algorithmic feed, Adam Mosseri, the head of the platform, is posting at least twice a month some unhinged ideas to "improve" the platform

His most recent one is a poll where he is asking how long posts should stay online before Meta automatically force-archive them (https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/C34VDq1OLTR)

It really seems that Meta has no idea what they are doing

I've been using this feature for a couple of weeks now, on my French-speaking account (also hosted on mastodon.social)

In the upcoming Mastodon 4.2, you can assign an account to a list, and toggle said list so that the posts that appear on it don't show up in your Home feed

On top of full-text search, this is another great addition to Mastodon!

The sad story of #xy reminds me of an anecdote I experienced when I published my COVID-19 dashboard for my home region of Lorraine in northeastern France (the dashboard is still online: https://covid.aleryon.science).

A stranger vehemently attacked me because I dared to publish a free dashboard, based on open data, during a pandemic, that I created with #rstats instead of Grafana - a technology I only know by name.

Another horrendous decision by #Meta about #Threads: they will test paying users for posts based on their "performance".

This creates a strong incentive to publish low quality content. This is exactly what happened on #Twitter when the platform introduced its revenue sharing system: since then, the platform has been overwhelmed by grifters who publish the most horrendous posts to go viral.

Another sign that Meta is completely out of its depth when it comes to Threads.
