In case you’re wondering…

TERFs are defending ’s decision to host and monetize literal Nazi content

It says it all

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

A few of them heckled me on Notes, asking me if, and I quote, I am a "communist”

First of all, no, I am absolutely not a communist

Second of all, conflating "I don't want to share a space with Nazis" and "I only hate Nazis because I'm a communist" shows a level of brain rot that perfectly embodies how detached from reality the terminally online far right is

Are these people even aware that liberal, non-communist democracies fought against the Nazis during WWII?

Ultimate brain rot

In response to @potus enabling federation via #Threads the other day, a number of people asked: why can't the White House self-host their own Mastodon server?

Our writer @deadsuperhero dives in with some thoughts on the current hurdles

The Report by @laurenshof is a great resource to keep up with how social media is changing.

What I especially like compared to more mainstream coverage is how Laurens keeps track of less "shiny" projects. Those are a fertile ground for new innovations.

I'm starting to think people that claim to like the fediverse dont understand the point. We want to be able to follow Threads accounts here without having to have a Threads account. That's the whole point.

No single entity is in control of social media. That's the glory of federation.

Blocking major companies from the fediverse will be the death of the concept. Don't silo yourselves in fits of hate and segregation or you're no better than the things you claim to protest.

@joshwayne @Jonathanglick @AAKL It’s probably part of the strategy. In my opinion, an important reason why they do this is to come clean in front of regulators, the EU in particular.

I’m not saying that as a criticism. Corporations have no souls, they just respond to their environment. In this case, the regulatory environment seems to work exactly as expected.

I've been using this feature for a couple of weeks now, on my French-speaking account (also hosted on mastodon.social)

In the upcoming Mastodon 4.2, you can assign an account to a list, and toggle said list so that the posts that appear on it don't show up in your Home feed

On top of full-text search, this is another great addition to Mastodon!

The ratio the good people of Threads is giving to Marco Rubio is so hard that it's probably illegal in several countries.

Whatever the differences between , or , users on all three platforms have the same rejection of the far right and its disgusting nonsense. I love that.

Another horrendous decision by about : they will test paying users for posts based on their "performance".

This creates a strong incentive to publish low quality content. This is exactly what happened on when the platform introduced its revenue sharing system: since then, the platform has been overwhelmed by grifters who publish the most horrendous posts to go viral.

Another sign that Meta is completely out of its depth when it comes to Threads.

Okay , I think this one will resonate with many of you.

has been recently criticised by many creators: they have a lot of followers, but very few of them actually see their posts.

Instagram's answer? "Stop crying".

Don't take my word for it, see for yourself here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C53oD86O8c0/

Considering is run by the same people, I'm increasingly convinced that will use Threads to exploit the free labor of creators in the same way it does with Instagram.

1/6

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

Why do you think Meta is trying to distance itself from news and politics?

It's probably not financially interesting, for many reasons.

But there may be another issue at play: power. Media are big corporations. Politicians have power. They can fight back, and inflict real damage to Meta.

Indie photographers or writers? What can they do, except, and I quote, "cry"?

4/6

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

I have seen this discourse from time to time on here: people being horribly condescending about "content creators".

What this condescending tone utterly fails to capture is that many of these "content creators" are independent workers trying to use social media to make a living.

Meta is not their employer. But they are extremely dependent on the decisions Meta takes. And the power relationship between creators and Meta is, by a wide margin, in favor of Meta.

2/6

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

Meta's strategy is fundamentally exploitative. Meta makes money on the back of content creators, and their free labor.

Adam Mosseri himself said it a few weeks ago: if Meta had to compensate content creators for their work, it would make Instagram financially unviable.

That being said, the open disdain and the gaslighting is something else.

It clearly shows that Meta believes that it can quite literally bully content creators, and get away with it. Probably because it's true.

In Gaza, Israel is engineering a famine.

In Ukraine, Russia is specifically targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

In both cases, civilians are targeted for no military reasons. Which is a war crime.

The indictment of Netanyahu and Gallant by the ICC is a logical consequence issue.

I’m increasingly convinced that defederation of Threads will backfires against the instances that defederate.

There is a vocal, but small, minority of users who have very strict opinions on Threads, the Fediverse and Mastodon. But they’re a minority.

The more Threads will federate, the more users who aren’t part of this minority but have to live with the consequences of its demands will ask for a different direction.

How involved was before he left the board? Not that much, it turns out.

It has always been misleading to present Bluesky as the “platform of Jack Dorsey”. It’s also sexist, as once again, the work of a talented woman was wrongfully attributed to a very mediocre man. The tech version of the Matilda effect.
