Let’s start another , this time on upcoming and new features on .

Megathreads are open ended threads where I share relevant information about a specific topic.

Bluesky will soon have proper DMs, video, better auth (via OAuth), better custom feeds, and even more anti-harassment features.

Not a feature, but an interesting post by Jay Graber, the CEO of .

How involved was before he left the board? Not that much, it turns out.

It has always been misleading to present Bluesky as the “platform of Jack Dorsey”. It’s also sexist, as once again, the work of a talented woman was wrongfully attributed to a very mediocre man. The tech version of the Matilda effect.

I will update the Mega Thread every time I find a new tool that I find worth mentionning, either third-party or first-party.

For the first post, I want to showcase… Tusks, obviously! It’s an excellent app for macOS, iOS, and iPad to compose and update threads.

What I especially like compared to more mainstream coverage is how Laurens keeps track of less "shiny" projects. Those are a fertile ground for new innovations.

Okay , I think this one will resonate with many of you.

has been recently criticised by many creators: they have a lot of followers, but very few of them actually see their posts.

Instagram's answer? "Stop crying".

Don't take my word for it, see for yourself here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C53oD86O8c0/

Considering is run by the same people, I'm increasingly convinced that will use Threads to exploit the free labor of creators in the same way it does with Instagram.

I have seen this discourse from time to time on here: people being horribly condescending about "content creators".

What this condescending tone utterly fails to capture is that many of these "content creators" are independent workers trying to use social media to make a living.

Meta is not their employer. But they are extremely dependent on the decisions Meta takes. And the power relationship between creators and Meta is, by a wide margin, in favor of Meta.

2/6

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

There is an army of content creators out there. If one gives up, Meta doesn't really care: there is now enough "content" for Instagram to push it to lurkers and "regular" users. Next to ads.

This is why the power dynamics is so tilted in favor of Meta.

Content creators can't even unionize. There is actually very little they can do.

3/6

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

Why do you think Meta is trying to distance itself from news and politics?

It's probably not financially interesting, for many reasons.

But there may be another issue at play: power. Media are big corporations. Politicians have power. They can fight back, and inflict real damage to Meta.

Indie photographers or writers? What can they do, except, and I quote, "cry"?

4/6

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

Meta's strategy is fundamentally exploitative. Meta makes money on the back of content creators, and their free labor.

Adam Mosseri himself said it a few weeks ago: if Meta had to compensate content creators for their work, it would make Instagram financially unviable.

That being said, the open disdain and the gaslighting is something else.

It clearly shows that Meta believes that it can quite literally bully content creators, and get away with it. Probably because it's true.

Interesting Safari fun fact I just discovered: If you name a bookmark folder with only an emoji and no text, the Bookmark Bar will hide the folder icon beside it, making for nice compact drop-down menus.

Now, if there was just a way for me to use SF Symbols.

I’m increasingly convinced that defederation of Threads will backfires against the instances that defederate.

There is a vocal, but small, minority of users who have very strict opinions on Threads, the Fediverse and Mastodon. But they’re a minority.

The more Threads will federate, the more users who aren’t part of this minority but have to live with the consequences of its demands will ask for a different direction.

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan I don’t have any reason to suspect Meta isn’t trying. This is why Threads is different from Gab or Truth Social.

At the end, weighting the pros and the cons is a matter of individual preferences. Hence why I think it is deeply misguided to act at the instance level. Simplifying the UI to block domains at the individual user is something I think would add a lot of value.

o_simardcasanova,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan This is what I meant: they do have some form of moderation, it's not a free-for-all. But the money they put in is far from being enough. And I don't see them putting enough money today, tomorrow or ever for that matter.
