I'm once again reminding everyone of my proposal to take away every single carpark at Auckland Transport and make it a job requirement, at least for the CEO and board members, to ditch their cars and move around the city using public transport and active modes exclusively.

Oh, you can't get to work on time? It's difficult to pick up the kids and get to your meetings? Services are late or cancelled?

Perhaps someone's job is to fix that, huh?

So the WHO is finally saying it out loud:

One in ten covid infections will need long term care.

As a player, I can tell you this is way more likely than it seems at first.

If infected with covid, and you roll 1 on a 1d10:
Gain a permanent level of exhaustion.

So wear a mask.
Get a decent modifier on your Constitution saving throw against infection.

Godspeed to everyone excited to try out , but remember it's Jack Dorsey's, ex twitter billionaire.

He was happy to pass it on to Musk, calling him "the singular solution I trust".

They claim to be decentralised but aren't (at least not yet) and their TOS are quite over the top, claiming ownership of anything uploaded to the platform (like Facebook).

Mastodon/Fediverse is by no means perfect. But I'd rather stay away from these ultra rich psychopaths thanks.

Won't be fooled twice.

Nats: We guarantee our rich mates will never pay taxes and renters can be kicked out so we can have more homeless people. What's a Climate change?

Labour: Found serious inequality problems. Someone should fix that. Not us though. We don't do public health anymore. Fuck the workers. What's a Climate change?

Greens: We have good ideas but please focus on how much of a mess we can make of our internal issues.

Act: We have 14 words for our 88 fans.

TPM: Wisely quiet.

The toddler is fascinated by robots and, therefore, with my R2D2 hoodie.

They asked what it is, what it's name is, how it moves and where does it come from.

Do we have some kind of consensus on how old is old enough for ?

(This kid doesn't even know of the existence of guns yet)

Also, would you start on episode I, Phantom Menace? Or episode IV, A New Hope? Or somewhere else altogether?

pezmico,
@pezmico@mastodon.nz avatar

@Kay good point. Where would you start on Star Trek though? There's so much of it!

pezmico,
@pezmico@mastodon.nz avatar

@Kay of course I understand.

My kid is great at conversation and has a good grasp of language (Japanese and Spanish only for now though), and they engage really well with concepts in the Miyazaki films they've watched.

I've never seen much Star Trek, but I'm kinda curious so the question is asked also for me.

Perhaps we can both get into it together, lol.

Many like to think that if the need arose, we'd be heroes.

We'd kill Hitlr. We'd punch a nzi. We'd rescue the baby from the fire. We'd shelter the weak and stand for justice.

The need is here.

Fascism is on the rise. Trans and queer ppl are being persecuted. Eugenics in a pandemic. Gross inequality. War. A world on fire.

Support eco activism. Protect trans kids. Speak out against racism and hatred. Wear a mask. Refuse to accept death and disease. Eat veges. Drive less.

Go on, be a hero.

Half Farmer, Half X is a Japanese idea of doing farming for sustainance half the time and something else you love the other half.

The concept is flexible and can start with growing tomatoes in your balcony.

It encourages us to be happier, calmer and most importantly, to change something in our lives. As small as it may be.

Listen to the explanation and lived experience in this .

Cyclone Fonterra, Hurricane Shell, Exxon Floods, BP Wildfires, etc

Quite literally the least we can do to thank them.

At this rate, we're sorted for names until probably July.

It is designed to push your buttons and trigger your FOMO.

The idea is to make you buy more than you need, to keep enriching the already wealthy at the expense of our wounded planet.

You are so much more than a consumer.
Say No.
Exercise your willpower.
Buy Nothing.

Kia ora toot friends. (Hello in Māori language)
Tonight I am bringing some , , , and .
I hope you enjoy them and are radicalised like I am. Once you start seeing how we've been trapped by you cannot unsee it again.
Let's fight for space for people, cities that are walkable, accesible, clean, green and safe.
Of course, please contribute your own memes to the thread and also radicalise your family, workmates and friends!

While it's true that have dramatically lower emissions when compared to combustion engines, that is only part of the problem.
EVs do not solve congestion, or road mortality (they might be worse as they tend to be heavier).
The production of batteries is very unsustainable and the need for charging infrastructure creates a new set of issues that need to be addressed in our public space. Essentially they need MORE of our cities.

EVs are here to save the automobile industry, not the planet.

pezmico,
@pezmico@mastodon.nz avatar

When measured by energy required to move people around, it's obvious that the real game changer in the EV field is not a Tesla, or even a car (although microcars come closer). The revolution here is the .
It's cheaper, safer, more efficient, more fun and it makes users healthier and happier. Although it also shares the problem of sustainability for battery production, the scale of this issue for ebikes is drastically reduced (close to 100x)
And the charging infrastructure already exists.

pezmico,
@pezmico@mastodon.nz avatar

The solutions to improve our cities are not some yet to be invented technology. We do not need to wait for flying or autonomous cars (which are always ten years away and never actually work, except in very limited scenarios).

The truth is the solutions exist and are even old and boring: buses, trains, bicycles, skateboards and even our own feet. Cheap, clean, reliable answers that build communities and improve with use.

The answers are simple, what we lack is political will.

Whenever we talk about using a () as a mode of transport, someone will say "But what about rain?"

I ride every day and get wet maybe twice a month on average. Soaked once every two months.
My workmates sit in traffic every single day, regardless of weather.

A rainproof jacket is enough 70% of the time. Pants and boots for the other 30%. When even that's not enough, there's dry clothes and a towel in a locker.

There's no such thing as bad weather. Only the wrong clothes.

pezmico,
@pezmico@mastodon.nz avatar

We have allowed our simple need for transportation to be over engineered and over complicated to the maximum.
Cars have their place and use, but 90% of the time you see them carrying a single human being on trips that are shorter than 10 kms. Quite easily the most inefficient use of energy and space possible, while also raising the stakes of any potential error to make it deadly.
If you are just moving about the city, do you really need a 2 ton metal armour of ecocidal fumes to carry you around?

is a fun activity that everyone can do, it helps our ecosystems, and is just plain good fun.

Restore a bit of life in your nearest dead green lawn, resurrect that empty lot nearby.

It's easy and almost impossible to trace back to anyone, just saying.
