My dad, who has been in the hospital or rehab since April 5, was sent to the ER from rehab for shortness of breath.

My mom wasn't told for three hours.

Once at the ER for shortness of breath the hospital took a picture of his groin area because it was so inflamed and swollen from the rehab center letting him sit in his own waste so much.

My mom has demanded the rehab center address this but everyone there says "it's not my job."

They're trying to decide if my dad needs the ICU.

Hot take on

What she did to the dog is awful and I hope she's prosecuted, assuming she didn't just make the story up.

Because of this story more people know her name than ever before. This was her intention.

I think we should ignore her until Trump picks her to be his vp.

Assuming he's the nominee, which I still honestly doubt.

Everybody thinks Watergate happened overnight.

It took years of the public not caring then the bottom fell out on Nixon all at once.

@HistoPol the history of Law Enforcement Officers Bills of Rights in Miami. Florida is one of their origin points.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol for the cops they were furious about things like Miranda rights. They were victims of an unjust system that picked on them. LEOBORs were around at local levels but at that point civilian review boards were becoming popular--and that REALLY pissed them off.

The John Birch's biggest campaign was "support your local police" in response to CRBs. At the 1972 RNC on Miami Beach the police rioted and covered the island, an island full of old people in tear gas. People demanded CRBs.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol so the police got a detective elected to state house. First or second active cop in history elected to a state house.

He immediately got a bill introduced creating the statewide LEOBOR to insulate cops from CRBs.

Maryland passed a similar bill at the same time. I need to explore more how they influenced each other (probably via police fraternal orga that were antecedent to their CBA units that started around then).

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol while Maryland got rid of their LEOBOR after George Floyd they did so because they had already entrenched it in their CBA contract. In fact, I found in FIU archives the labor union playbook that told unions to do exactly this because there was absolutely no way a court would allow their LEOBOR to persist. Except they did.

And Ron DeSantis just gutted all civil review boards this month while standing behind a support your police sign.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol regarding the greed of plutocrats, I think this blog, which I did not know before and am not vouching for overall, nails it.

The main argument is that capitalism was a bridge from feudalism to...feudalism.

I actually disagree on the final point about the end state being a return to feudalism. What we're looking at is a corporatist variety of capitalism.

All fascisms that reached power were corporatist--the plutocrats, oligarchs and corporations run the economy. @CarlG

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol @CarlG, I appreciate what I think the main arguments of the Defund the Police crowd are: take things away from the police that shouldn't be there like health and wellness checks, domestic disputes, traffic stops, nonviolent drug crimes, prostitution, etc and take the money spent on those things and give them to agencies trained to handle these needs.

We'd be better off with this.

Still, I agree, given the origins of American policing, slave society and colonialism, abolish them.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol one of the biggest issues with policing, and I'm gonna really piss people off here but it's where the facts take you, fire fighters, is their unions. Because they were fraternal organizations first, and racist AF from the start, and unchecked before the late 1960s on their racism and ideology, these unions need to be replaced altogether.

The entire command structure and organization of both entities are also affected, which, comes from colonial counter-insurgency, not safety @CarlG

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@HistoPol
We absolutely need firefighters, first responders, etc. No one, other than a few anarchists (and many of these are likely paid trolls), wants no public safety entities.

But we need to break these things up and start over from their current forms.

I too have no idea what the end form would look like. I just know the current models are designed to dominate and control, not to serve and protect anything other than rich white men's money.

I'll live post what I can of the rest of the day's #TrumpTrial, but I'm utterly exhausted.

We've packed up most of the house (moving May 26), which did me in, even though we've gone so slowly. But all the lifting, sorting, etc, takes it out of me regardless.

We're still packing more today, plus a showing, so I'll be in and out.

Thanks for understanding.

The government, media and people at large lied about the motives of protesters in the Civil Rights Movement too.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 yup. And the politicians falling over themselves to claim King? The favorability of King when he was murdered was in the 30s. They hated him. The press demonized him. The US government hated him. There's reasonable evidence that the US government killed him.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 the King family absolutely believes it and won a lawsuit to that end.

He was turning his focus on the Vietnam War and how it wasn't a war grinding up Black soldiers, rather, it was grinding up poor soldiers.

That plus getting involved with a labor effort for wages in the under appreciated but crucial sanitation industry and, well... There's a lot of motive.

One of the biggest complaints I get when I post about our necessary transition to clean energy is “the grid can’t handle it” which is an uninformed statement as is, but developments are always being made to make it stronger.

Here’s one plan that will definitely raise grid reliability. As needs rise, so do solutions if you have people in charge who are actually interested in addressing climate issues.

The Biden admin has a plan to get more mileage out of the power grid:
https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/transmission/the-biden-admin-has-a-plan-to-get-more-mileage-out-of-the-power-grid

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@TonyStark the grid was literally designed by Nikola Tesla. Some of his generators are still online and in use.

If the grid can't handle it maybe it's time to bring it into the latter half of the twentieth century or maybe even the early twenty first century.

Seems a little grifty to advertise a college as a bastion of intellectualism, charge exorbitant sums to attend, and then have people arrested when they don’t think what you want them to.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 it's worse than that. The students ARE doing what they've learned from their classes. I'm not saying the profs taught them to think a certain way. I'm saying they're doing what free thinking, critical thinking people who believe in democracy and have self agency do.

The MBAs that are Presidents and Deans, whose main job, thanks to GOP defunding of education, is fundraising from megadonors, don't like OR UNDERSTAND what the students are doing. Because they can't think.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 especially the presidents. The Deans often have a foot in both worlds and should know better but they're under enormous pressure from both the President and the clowns on the Board of Trustees, or whatever the governing body in x institution is.

Even at public schools the BoT is almost entirely a bunch of unqualified hacks whose only successes were wage theft at some corporation polluting the planet to death.

And why would she literally write this down when it so clearly would out her? I'm down with a mix of stupidity and arrogance but that's an too absurd for Hollywood level of stupidity and arrogance.
