“The entire case for “AI” as a disruptive tool worth trillions of dollars is grounded in the idea that chatbots and image-generators will let bosses fire hundred of thousands or even millions of workers.

That’s it.”

Yep. Spot on. This is the fundamental reason that is getting so many billions poured into it. It’s the lure of replacing expensive labor with automation. Corporations have endlessly squeezed blood from lower-cost labor and they are salivating at the prospect of getting rid of high-cost labor.

This is unfortunate, because AI has actual uses. As models get more specialized and smaller, I can see AI automating a lot of rote work away at reasonable cost. Unfortunately, the corporate hype is so strong right now it’s muddying all the conversations.

    🙃

    Do not fall for these misguided arguments.

    Most of the time people use end-to-end encrypted apps to talk about the most mundane things.

    Sometimes vulnerable people use end-to-end encryption to protect themselves and stay safe.

    We should keep and cherish encryption.

    We should demand it everywhere.

    End-to-end encryption protects our human right to privacy and safety.

    We must fight for it! ✊🔒

    @Em0nM4stodon Heck, our ENTIRE economy is pretty much dependent upon encryption. What happens if the US dumbs down encryption and forces backdoors in all US devices? Bad Actors get them AND US products with backdoored encryption are not only worthless EVERYWHERE, but a Target.

    Fed rate hikes aren't simply a dial that controls inflation.

    They're more like a Rube Goldberg machine—slowing the economy so much that workers lose jobs and pay until (maybe, just maybe) prices drop.

    This is a bad way to fight inflation that's largely driven by price gouging.

    pyperkub,
    @pyperkub@mastodon.social avatar

    @northernlights @Npars01 @wndlb @atheistic_1 @staidwinnow @echanda There are a LOT of ~2000 year old writings which are very relevant today. Socrates, Sun Tzu, Marcus Aurelius, Herodotus, Plato, etc. and, while one would like to discount the Bible, it is still the most published book in the world with one of the largest followings, so it would be a mistake to discount it. The problem is more those who cherry pick it for power and control.
