nah makes sense that after twelve days of toxic air in this damned town some moron down the block is burning trash in their backyard.

a literal plume four storeys tall.
I had the windows open and now the entire place reeks of smoke. AGAIN.

what is wrong with people. seriously. the first breathable air in two weeks, and these people go, can't have that!! lungs unhappy with clean air!! must burn shit in my yard!!! 😡

robyn, to fuckcars

Soo we're crossing a parking lot at a marked crosswalk. We're about a third across, suddenly a drivist comes SPEEDING (like.. a speed WAY inappropriate for a parking lot) from the other end of the lot, and accelerates further towards us. So I yell out that this is a crossing.

What do I get back? You guessed it! A "FUCK YOU BITCH" This was, of course, a dude in a pickup truck. 🤡

So anyway, petromasculinity, anyone? 😊

robyn, to Cats

So I know it's not , but we are celebrating this guy's sixth year with us, and so here's the ✨️ Glowup ✨️

PS phone cameras apparently have improved over the least six years 😅

robyn, to edmonton

oh for the love of everything holy.

don't know why I bother getting up early to try and go for a run anymore. it's useless

robyn, to random

So I just got a new that can do that swanky new (to me... I keep my phones for a while) feature where you can have an app answer the call for you & transcribe it into text, and I, uh..... yes

gonna guess this call may not have been in English

robyn, to edmonton

once again having a completely normal one ✌🏼

Ugh, so other than one brutal winter month, it seems that I've received my highest-ever energy bill in my one b/r apartment this month. In August?!? I have no a/c and I just run a small fan on hot days. I also just locked in lower rates, as far as I know. Is this additional cost all due to my recent addiction?!? I rarely run a TV but I've used one for my dual screen while teaching and never had high bills like this. Mystified.

robyn,

@EllenInEdmonton Does your bill have a breakdown in terms of how much your actual cost contributes, as opposed to what are fixed fees?

Because if it's anything like our bill, the actual consumption is a ridiculously little portion of the whole thing. It's like that meme with the "Fee Fi Fo Fum" fee and the "might as well" fee and... well, you get the idea.

so I used to create art. not, like, professionally. but I had a lil shop and sold some stickers and cards and such. mostly just enjoyed creating the art though.

then stopped when my work got stolen all the time and minted as (🤮) - spent more time on takedown notices and myself than creating.

anyways.. I think I've missed it. been working through a couple courses exploring other digital forms, and I feel... better than I have in a while?

Okay hive mind! Where can I find the darkest, most -est bread* in ? Crust must produce a THOCK THOCK sound when you knock on it, like any good should.

I've tried a couple places but don't want to skew the results 🤠

*Pumpernickel need not apply

Should look somewhat like this:

Top down view of a loaf of German bread. It is covered in flour, but you can see the dark crust below.
A loaf of bread seen from the top, with a couple slices just in front.

Hi all fellow cyclists out there. I have come over from the dark side. Would love to make my home here in a safe place where cyclists are accepted. I will subject you to my strange sense of humour and my cycle commuting videos.

robyn,

@cyclegranny hellooo & welcome 🙋🏼‍♀️🚲

for bike content, I recommend following and , as well as . plus, some of the [airport code]+"bike" hashtags exist here too, just like on <whispers> that other platform.

So... I've been back in for a week and honestly I'm just depressed. Neverending everywhere, people having to drive 15hrs to get to emergency centres. Absolutely unreal, and yet it isn't.

On top of that, my fave summertime hobby, , is dead, since I simply cannot be outside anymore due to the . I got nine bites in twenty minutes last week and the following days were hell. They bite through clothes and bug spray 🧵 1/x

robyn,

Almost all bites blow up to golfball-sized welts that are super painful. We have no standing water in the garden, no ponds etc, and yet you step outside for even just 30 seconds and there's a cloud around you.

Whatever is doing to control population is definitely not working.

All our windows have intact screens, and yet you open the front door for a couple seconds and they come in

🧵 2/x

robyn,

We now have a zapper running indoors - and just after I'd moved it next to me, a mosquito came and bit me in my knee. Through my pants.

is the one thing I really love in the summers. Our garden was a concrete pad until two years ago - had it all ripped out, designed the garden myself after that, I grow vegetables and mostly native perennials.

I can't anymore. We're even considering having the yard sprayed. It's absolutely insane. 🧵 /fin

robyn,

Update: I have acquired a bug jacket with attached hood / head net. Sprayed some Off and braved the backyard to prune the tomatoes, and harvest a ton of stuff.

The got me through TWO layers of clothing (tshirt + bug jacket), AND on top of that despite spraying myself with toxic sh*t.

I give up.

robyn,

@likelyjanlukas @newfangl3d I've had this exact conversation twice with my spouse, and that's just today. :joysob:

The deal in this city is: The winters are long and dark and cold. But then you get a fantastic spring, a great summer, and an enjoyable fall.

Welp....

I highly recommend you search for "microsoft travel headed [your city name here]" to find Microsoft's LLM-generated listicle about things to do or eat in your city.

For Amsterdam, we're told "The most popular places to try out Patatje Oorlog are Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx and Knaus Berry Farm" ...Vleminckx was my #1 place for fries in the city, but Knaus Berry Farm appears to be a berry farm in Florida.

Whatever algo they have for pulling the accompanying photos is awful, too.

Photo purportedly of Vancouver's Main Street, but actually showing Las Vegas

robyn,

@dx Apparently you REALLY have to try the ubiquitous local delicacy that is camel burgers! ... in , Alberta, Canada.

For the first two "restaurants" they just went with them due to their name, it looks like (one of them with a bonus typo in The Happy Came!), and Fossil Farms is not a thing that exists here, I'm pretty sure.

😭😂

I can't wait for the survey on cars!! 10kph is entirely fast enough for a giant F150 to travel in the hours between midnight and 5am 💁🏼

OK this has to be one of my favourite videos yet.

It articulates so well what I've been feeling in North American cities. And the mental map stuff at the end? Made me realize THAT was why I felt disoriented when I first moved to NA!! Sure "it's a grid", and "it's easy", but... there's no !! 🤯

robyn, to edmonton

ok what is it with these ***** in !!

spent three weeks in Europe, with a lot of outside time & no repellent, and did not get a single bite.

returned to my garden in yesterday for some much-needed pruning and general maintenance, with only a few inches of my arms exposed, and got two bites within ten minutes. one of which is already blowing up to be a painful, golfball sized welt. 😠

seriously what sort of skeeter is this around here!!

robyn, to edmonton

Back in .We probably don't even qualify for the with this trip, but hey, that's the vast majority of groceries for the week done!

There were six customers in total at the store (we went very early since... Well, jet lag), and FOUR of them had bike helmets on!! Solid mode share, and maybe hopefully counteracting the "oh, everyone drives here" a little bit.

Also, already missing the German bread & cheese selection.

robyn, to edmonton

Listen I love , but we 1000% need more of this type of outdoor seating and activity space that is quiet and entirely separated from cars. A Fußgängerzone, essentially.

This picture also illustrates nicely why when people say "let's have a beer on the patio" and the "patio" is three feet wide and next to a four-lane urban highway I will probably not join them

robyn,

This also encourages (and enables) wandering around without a destination. We hadn't actually planned to go to this ice cream café. We were wandering around the old town, spotted this very busy location, and decided to sit there for a while.

And yes, we did in fact arrive by car, with the big difference being that it is understood that you aren't entitled to, and cannot, park in the old town center. You have to park somewhere on the outskirts and make your way in.
