My Nixos experiment was going so well… genuinely I am a bit miffed by this!

Alas, I am having repeated hard lock ups with large zfs replications.

Things I have tried:

  • memtest for 5hours. ✅
  • s-tui cpu stress test for 3hrs. ✅
  • booted in a live Ubuntu iso and performed the same zfs replication for 2hrs. No lock ups.

Because the machine just hard locks I get no stacktrace or kernel panic to help me here. No logs I can find or anything.

So it’s got to be one of the following.

  • A hardware issue. I’m not ruling this out because even though the majority of the system was untouched there is a new HBA (LSI 16i) in there. And a couple of new SSDs.
  • A software issue. Is there something in the Nixos implementation of zfs that’s causing this? Seems so unlikely but I think I owe it to try a different OS today for testing.
sageofredondo,
@sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

@ironicbadger not necessarily. I have had hard restarts where it was so severe for the kernel it just restarted without being able to drop down to the code to print the stack when I was testing Core Scheduling when it was out of tree.

If this hardware works on other distributions then it signals to me it is a software issue.

You need to post more info. Kernel and openzfs.

Forget HDMI and DisplayPort. Can we just make a compact universal analog connector based on RCA or VGA and leave the DRM and royalty shake downs behind?

sageofredondo,
@sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

@vwbusguy except for the analog part the last two parts are covered by DisplayPort. 😎

New motherboard and cpu arrived. Yup that’s 16x 16x 16x 8x 16x 8x 16x pcie slots. Video(s) coming soon.

But never mind that. What psychopath decided to mount the socket on this supermicro motherboard so that the EPYC silkscreen logo on the processor is UPSIDE DOWN.

2. Is a sleight against what? Mint? System76? PPAs? The snap is built by Mozilla on their infra, I thought. 🤔

Edit: Ah. It’s the Debian and Ubuntu archive packages?

sageofredondo,
@sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

@popey do you have an idea on who this is the for? Debian users who want more mainline FF? Ubuntu's FF snap not working well? I stopped using the Chromium Flatpak after the upgrade to Fedora 39 wiped out my profiles (and moved completely to Firefox).

I've adjusted the COSMIC editor and terminal to take custom window background colors from the COSMIC theme, when they are using the COSMIC syntax theme. Here's my DOOM theme 🤘.

Noticed one of the dependencies is libgtk. Do you plan to keep that or move away from it?

Fun trivia: USA Elected (senate/house) representatives continue to get paid even if they force the government to shutdown and about 4 million americans go without pay (some of whom are declared "essential" and must continue to work without pay ex: military and air traffic controllers).
Food banks are stocking up for next week as a lot of federal employees will need to rely on them next week.

Senators and House members not getting paid would ensure this never happens.

sageofredondo,
@sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

@jfmezei ah the 27 amendment.

Case in point: California used to have these budget showdowns all the time. When the voters amended the constitution (mostly be a handful of Republicans) to cut off pay for the legislature and it was enforced; we magically had a budget on time, every time, every budget cycle since.

As of this week, I am the author of less than 57% of all commits. For the first time ever. My share of commits in the project has been continuously shrinking since 2004. We get so many awesome contributions from so many people I simply cannot keep up the pace of my own contributions!

In regards to KDE Plasma changes...

Single click to select, double-click to open. It's the only sane way to use a PC.

Don't @ me, if you disagree you're wrong and filth.

@gamingonlinux one of the first things I changed on KDE in the past.

Strange on how a Windows looking DE would adopt such an un-Windows default for something so critical as selecting something with a mouse.

Pretty disappointed with how LTT has gone so far. I already noticed their reviews have gotten pretty unreliable.

Hoping things turn around-LTT has been a positive force for change. LTT also has been a positive force for Linux Gaming as well-just talking about it and pointing out issues is enough to get people to try it out.

@kwf it was cringe, but I enjoyed them trying something new.

Btw, Linus is doing it again with his house. Putting all his clients into a rack and pumping the hot water to heat his pool.

The jank was there, but I let go. Now it is outright negligence with the prep they put into their videos.

As much flack as I've given over source shenanigans, they've kept AWX and available to the public, very much to their credit. Tower was proprietary when they bought it and they opened it and kept it open.

And yes, this post is really about . Don't do false equivalent arguments. Hashicorp definitely did the worse thing.

sageofredondo,

@Conan_Kudo @vwbusguy @jzb indeed, our so called (part of our) secret sauce, the internal kernel tests, required quite a few engineer hours to review for customer specific stuff that should not be public for example.

Feeling a bit beaten with a running nose and pain in the ears since a few days. Doc suspects a viral infection of the ears and prescribed some meds to deal with that. I made sure it is not THAT virus. Test #3 in as many days. Y’all still have tests at home? They’re dirt cheap ATM, at least here in Germany. Oktoberfest is coming, so I stocked up on masks too. Just regular precautions for me because I have taken this stuff quite serious since January 2020 without getting panicked. ‪😷‬

XDA claim they're a "leading tech publication".

They published an article titled: "Why I like Linux on my Steam Deck but not my desktop"

-> Uses tiny and basically unsupported obscure Linux distribution to make a case against it on the desktop.

-> Also thinks somehow Proton is only on Steam Deck?

Please, if you're going to publish a Linux article, get your writers to do more than 1 minute research into it.

    I really really hate the term "bug-to-bug compatibility". I hate how clones story normalized it and people now talk about it like this is the main and only thing in the world.

    While it doesn't make any technical sense.

    Why?

    Because ask yourself - is RHEL bug-to-bug compatible with RHEL?

    sageofredondo,
    @sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

    @bookwar @gbraad a quick aside since you mentioned kernel. In RHEL8 we had a kABI guarantee throughout the minor releases. In RHEL9 we dropped that. Each new minor release can break the kABI. (Note: even for EUS or RHEL8 we could break that guarantee for say security or other critical reasons.)

    It's Friday so I made a new graph. It shows the % share of the vulnerabilities that are "C mistakes" since 2010 - per the date of the findings being reported. The share was 60% of the reported flaws back in 2010, it went down, up and is coming down again and is now at 41.4%

    This graph will appear in the regular dashboard starting tomorrow.

    sageofredondo,
    @sageofredondo@mastodon.social avatar

    @bagder looking through the changelog. 40% is still surprising considering the age of the software and many of the standards it implements.

    Btw, thank you for making this graph and for your work on curl.

    Everytime I go on Odysee, the content there seems to drift more and more towards conspiracy theories, complete disinformation and nonsense, or at worst ultra racist / xenophobic / hateful rethoric. The staff has a history of just saying amen to everything, including white supremacist stuff.

    I’ve been thinking of abandoning it (I would keep PeerTube as the alternative to YouTube for people who really don’t want to use YT). Out of curiosity, a little poll about my content:
