My god. I forgot, I would play guitar so much more if I didn't hate guitars and amplifiers so much.

Unfortunately, none of the other instruments are depraved enough.

I believe in humanity. One day we'll invent a guitar that doesn't fall the fuck apart when you play some enthusiastic doom metal and/or country music on it. One day we'll make an amp that doesn't sound like a little fuckin toy from Mcdonald's when you crank it up.

To quote one of my favorite old bandmates, "Why bother fine tuning? You're just gonna bend the strings anyway."

@thomasfuchs Seriously. If you set up at a hip bar with one of these things and printed up charts for people on 1st dates? License to print money.

As we hear reports that it will take 10 years (🤯) to replace the 1.6 mile Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, remember that China built the Danyang-Kunshan bridge and Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years each.

Danyang-Kunshan Bridge is 102 miles long, and 100 ft above the water.

Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 16 miles and 623 ft tall, earthquake and typhoon proof, and can withstand a direct strike from a 300,000 ton cargo ship. That last point is unfortunately topical.

@maggiejk @mekkaokereke @PJ_Evans Friend of mine is a carpenter. He gets called in to fix leaks on 1 or 2 year old houses all the time. The American construction industry is thoroughly corrupt at almost every level.

@huitema @djcapelis @bouriquet @AdeptVeritatis @mekkaokereke @UncivilServant @McBeth @hazelweakly The recent "updating" of I-5 in Tacoma which is still not totally done, has taken well over 25 years. Far longer than building all of I-5 from Canada to Mexico in the first place.

People have spent years downplaying COVID by saying "it's just the flu." This is reckless for many reasons, one of those being that new flu strains pose a constant threat to public health. I really hope we don't have to experience directly how devastating the flu can be.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@luckytran I used to work in homeless shelters and watched the flu tear through every winter and kill people.

Anyone who doesn't think the flu is a problem is blissfully ignorant.

When I heard people saying covid was "just a flu" I didn't totally know how to react. The idea of a second flu is terrifying.

“When drivers fail to yield for pedestrians, it’s not because they can’t see them, it’s because they don’t care.” Kudos to @VisionZeroYVR for this brilliant intervention. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/bricks-vancouver-crosswalk-pedestrian-safety

@jay_chi @jamesglave @VisionZeroYVR If I wanted to stop at stop signs and red lights, I just would drive my car. You're ridiculous.

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@KawaTora @jessta @jay_chi That reminds me of an interview I read with an Italian former bicycle racer who was still riding centuries at 98. The interviewer was like, "isn't it hard on your body to ride that much?" and he was like "you don't understand, cycling is regenerative, I think the only reason I can still walk is because I still ride centuries"

The health benefits of cycling statistically add years to your life, even factoring in the risk of crashes.

@jay_chi @gunstick @jamesglave @VisionZeroYVR Do you think that historic railroad signals applied to pedestrians and bicycles? Whoa

Hint: The signals were created largely to protect pedestrians from the trains!

sidereal,
@sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

@energisch_ @jamesglave @VisionZeroYVR I wouldn't necessarily advocate this, but I know a guy here in the USA who rides his bicycle while open carrying his Glock. Cars give him a pretty wide berth.

@TomSwirly @Lazarou Denying any elements of the holocaust qualifies as holocaust denial. It’s a problem where if you give an inch, these people will take a mile. It’s not a slippery slope thing, it’s a dog whistle thing. “I just have questions about the official narrative” is the probably the most common form of Holocaust Denial.

A driver lost control of his car in Honolulu and killed two cyclists today. Let's look at how the Honolulu Star Advertiser covered this collision.

"a collision involving a vehicle” - you might think the bikes hit the car instead of the other way around.

"The vehicle landed in the path of two bicyclists” - sounds more like it landed on the cyclists, not in their path.

"Police said they were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.” - normally people in crosswalks are not wearing helmets.

@marcprecipice This right here is the main reason I wear a styrofoam hat when I ride my bike. I don’t want to get victim blamed when some cager runs me over

The other day I watched Leave the World Behind and while the general concept of the film was fine I guess and the cast was generally talented there were all these weird Boomer Lib moments in the construction of the characters that made it really alienating to anyone who's not, you know, a boomer lib

Then I go on to Wikipedia and I see that Obama personally gave feedback to the screenwriter, telling them how to make the characters more sympathetic

One of the greatest own goals in the history of cinema
