With #H5N1 #birdflu spreading amongst dairy cows, one of the most important things to think about right now is what would need to happen for this virus to actually start a pandemic.
I'm on a train, so a brief thread...

"Linus Torvalds is just a manager, just check ' commit history, he hardly contributes any changes these days."

There is some truth in statements like that which one bumps into occasionally on the net. Nevertheless they are not drawing an accurate picture at all, as Linus is still heavily involved and every week or two influences development a great deal with insightful and technical contributions or patches.

Here is an example from today: https://lore.kernel.org/all/CAHk-%3DwhHWjKK1TOMT1XvxFj8e-_uctJnXPxM%3DSyWHmW63B_EDw@mail.gmail.com/

stefanct,
@stefanct@chaos.social avatar

@kernellogger that's what good managers do, actually... it's not a contradiction at all. the problem is that managers on top of so many people have no technical knowledge whatsoever because they also have to deal with stuff that a foss project doesn't directly have to.

I need to store DEKs and sadly can't store KEKs on another system.

OWASP has this guidance. Is this still the best practice?

stefanct,
@stefanct@chaos.social avatar

@badlogic @joshix yeah that's a bit misleading but the highlighted paragraph is the important one :) i.e. you "store" the kek information on another system: the user's brain, and generate the kek from that.
this is also what FDE on linux uses (LUKS). there you can have multiple password slots to unlock the actual data on disks, which can be used with passwords or pass files (e.g., to unlock via a use stick instead of a password).

The number of people who don't get this joke is insane. It's about 15% of comments on the video right now.

I do not understand how anybody could think I'm serious here, but I've clearly overestimated the average YouTuber.

This actually really annoys me.

I want to be able to make silly jokes, and I don't want them to have to be spelled out and obvious. That ruins them.

I now understand why big YouTubers water down everything to the point of being homogeneous slop.

My latest video is now live on YouTube! I visited the best* city in North America, and it was not what I expected!

Which is why it's the longest video I've ever made! :)

@notjustbikes i fear you can make a similar video about pretty much any recovering city. vienna for example is praised everywhere but there are still so many stroads and ridiculous car-centric places left that the local government is clinging to or even building new although their removal is inevitable. and you would really be amazed by some choices (the ring road or metro station "altes landgut" or the whole northern part of line U2 and the "stadtstraße" for example).

Next years @linuxplumbersconf will be in Vienna, Austria during the Week of 16 Sep.

To quote from the private " Conference is a Wrap, see you next year" mail I just received:

""we're looking forwards to seeing you at next year's Linux Plumbers Conference (possibly even in person?) which will be in Vienna, Austria on the Week of 16 September 2024 (co-located with OSS EU). We haven't found the actual space we'll be using yet, so we don't have exact days of that week to give you.""

Fascinating both for what it says about dev & what it says about statistics:

A gamedev realized Linux users were just 5.8% of their sales, but represented 38% of bug reports.

Then they looked at those numbers closer, and realized. Linux users were not experiencing more bugs. Almost none of the Linux-user bugs were Linux-related. Linux users were simply more likely to file bugs.

Their conclusion: A linux port pays for itself bc it nerdsnipes ppl into giving u free QA

As the Nazi group NMR has such poor IT-security, AFA (antifa) in Sweden "have had complete access to the webshop Greenpilled's customer data for parts of many years" and have now released their international customer info, after actively giving those people a chance to avoid that,
so if you're an antifascist, in these locations in particular, this list of which people chose to pay for Nazi-propaganda should be of interest to you:
Australia, Belgium, UK, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Iceland, Japan, Canada, Croatia, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany and USA.

@neil in my setup i simply clone the mac of one interface on the other one and get fully automagical redundancy w/o any outages or disconnects. but depends on one's router though.
