“When you put all of these stories together, a clear picture emerges. The Indian government has developed a repertoire of tactics for repressing criticism abroad, and is currently deploying all of them as part of a campaign of intimidation in the United States. Human rights activists, experts, and Indian American community organizers are aware of India’s efforts and speak of its campaign as an everyday concern for themselves and people they know.

Which means it’s probably working.” https://www.vox.com/world-politics/24160779/inside-indias-secret-campaign-to-threaten-and-harass-americans

@cydonian When I read the NY Times article talking about India’s attempts to suppress Sikhs in the US, even going to the point of attempt to murder an American Citizen on American soil I was shocked. Basically, the intelligence service of India (Research and Analysis Wing) carried out a military operation in the US with zero consequences.

Bad things that have happened to me since just before 6am eastern time:

  1. Wake up to an on call alert.
  2. Spoiled wet cat food explodes in my face.
  3. Family drama in group text messages won't stop rolling in.
  4. Donut box flipped over in the car.
  5. Dog smashed through the screen door….

So for anyone I've angered recently. You've made your point, you can stop stabbing the voodoo doll now.

Selling on Craigslist so far is a lot of people texting if it's still available, then never replying again when you say yes, except the ones that do reply after that are scammers with a pitch for some convoluted payment scheme.

@vwbusguy It's not like we were there uninvited. I'm personally not a fan of the resurgence of isolationism in the US. While I'm sure the US has made many mistakes over the years in our interventions I'm not entirely certain that handing the developing world over the Vladimir Putin is a good idea either.

Amarok 3.0 "Castaway" released! The new 3.0 is the first stable Qt5/KDE Frameworks 5 based version of Amarok, and first stable release since 2018, when the final Qt4 based version 2.9.0 was released https://blogs.kde.org/2024/04/29/amarok-3.0-castaway-released/

The worst thing about the xz backdoor is that the same process could easily be replicated on a wide set of other projects. The whole software ecosystem is based on trust that is often undeserved.

sudoedit,
@sudoedit@mastodon.social avatar

@soller This is a scary example of what can happen with bad guys doing bad things in open source software. But being a glass half full kind of person, isn’t this sort of an example of the process working as intended too?

Some dude noticed his database application running slow in a testing branch, and is able to sufficiently backtrack all the related code to find the problem and alert everyone?

sudoedit,
@sudoedit@mastodon.social avatar

@soller True, but it seems to me that without some sort of active auditing on every package included in a distro we sort of rely on luck as a general practice 🤷‍♂️.

Outside of distros taking all of this stuff in house and users deciding to trust them is there an alternative?

So, (.com) is evil now, but is there anything stopping AI scraping of the ?

Wasn't going to federate? I am all for just blocking them now that these things are happening, but what's stopping others? Couldn't there be servers out there just silently taking away all of this?

We also have feeds for every user profile and hashtag, a feature I love, but a double edged sword.

I really want us to remain open and such, but they make it really hard...

The absolutely infuriating thing about Tumblr potentially starting to silently sell off your posts unless you affirmatively check a deeply-hidden opt-out box you can only find out about through word of mouth is, if I bring up my own Tumblr and try to scroll back more than a few posts, it stops me literally saying "Stop: Classified". So I don't get access to my posts, but OpenAI does.

@kev I’ve been looking at different blogging platforms lately and one of the things I’ve been trying to to do is make sure my rss feed doesn’t break. I also find that mildly annoying.

I also wonder if a change like moving to a new platform confuses some feed readers and marks everything as unread.

I have a bunch of feeds as well, and I’ll bet at least once a month or so I’ll get one site that suddenly has 200 unread posts.

This internet tells me that to deliver five-minute remarks, I need to pare down to 750 words. I'm tempted to go higher given that I'm a fast-talking New Yorker. You all have any guidance on length/time?

sudoedit,

@jeffjarvis If it takes a little over 1 minute but less than 2 minutes to sit down and read it, then I’d think you’re coming close to 5 minutes of content for a talk.

OpenAI suspends ByteDance’s account after it used GPT to train its own AI model: Isn't it hypocritical to use the copyrighted work of others without permission but deny others the same opportunity? OpenAI scraped the entire Internet but is now acting holier than thou.
https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/15/24003542/openai-suspends-bytedances-account-after-it-used-gpt-to-train-its-own-ai-model OpenAI can train on various data types such as text, images, books & videos without permission, but competitors can not access it once it's in their system. So, yes, it is a problematic version of copyright

sudoedit,

Folks do realize that Daylight Saving Time is wrong and Standard Time is right, correct? Noon should be close to when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, not some arbitrary figure to make people feel good. Although, to be fair, all time is arbitrary. Let’s call noon 42.
