Why do IDEs always default the terminal to the bottom of the screen? I’m always—always—going to move it to right side of the screen. No matter what. Am I the only one who does this?

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey I’m apparently the only one who never uses the built-in terminal 🤷🏼‍♂️

Good morning, and welcome to Enshittification Tuesday. We've got quite a selection for your perusal today, and shockingly it isn't all related to AI.

We've got:

  • Microsoft adds AI spyware at the OS level

  • iTerm2 adds AI spyware at the Terminal level

  • FireTV interface has been sneakily tweaked to automatically subscribe users to new services when downloading certain apps (yes, there's a confirmation screen, but blink and you'll miss it & might get double-subscribed)

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd @grmpyprogrammer How exactly is an opt-in feature that the user is explicitly notified about, "spyware”?

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @kboyd @grmpyprogrammer @mdhughes That feature is not enabled by default and requires you to specifically turn it on. So.. don't turn it on?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a dumb idea and I would never enable it. But I also don't think the sky is falling and I certainly don't classify it as "spyware”.

I’d love to see a behind-the-scenes or making-of for . How do they put it together in such a tight, well-made package. There don’t appear to be many cuts, and John Oliver’s hand motions and everything is so well-choreographed. Is he really that good, or do they practice this over and over?

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey He was a guest on the Smartless podcast and talks about how they plan and vet stories. https://www.smartless.com/episodes/episode/24ffc528/john-oliver

If you're ever doubting yourself, just look at any B2B software. The amount of horribly broken applications with designs from 1997 that generate millions is amazing. If Salesforce can do it, so can you.

Also, whoever added that Larry AI bullshit to Laracasts that just posts bad info on every question, please know that I almost completely ignore anything from that site now because of how worthless those bot responses have made it.

Has fedi engagement picked up recently, or am I just posting quality content?

thomas,

@ramsey My favorite comment on there by far is this one:

“This guy seems to fundamentally misunderstand open source”

You should get a screenshot of that one on a tshirt to wear to conferences 😂

@ramsey Ha that's amazing!

“This is a hybrid role with 50 WFH days per year, to use whenever you like.”

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Oh wow. I never thought of a company using WFH days like PTO, but also it's sadly not surprising at all that someone thought of doing that 😥

Did we ever figure out what genius at Google decided Chrome should force all image downloads to silently convert to webp without any way to change that behavior? They’re definitely near the top of my shitlist this week.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii Oh nice. I found a chrome extension that will let you save as a specific extension, but it forgets the last used directory between saves which is almost as annoying.

We visited Morehead State University in Kentucky today and checked out their Space Systems department, where students build cubesats that actually go into space, and then they communicate with them using a dish that’s also part of the Deep Space Network. This dish will eventually be the primary dish for communicating with the Lunar Gateway.

Clean room for testing and building cubesats.
A machine used to test cubesat components in a vacuum.
Two satellite dishes atop a ridge rising behind campus student housing.

@ramsey I don’t think I’ve ever said this about anything in Kentucky except for bourbon, but that’s so cool!

’s Truth Social is now a public company. Experts warn its multibillion-dollar valuation defies logic

“Despite the late-day slide, Wall Street is still assigning Trump Media an eye-popping valuation of nearly $11 billion — a price tag that experts warn is untethered to reality.”

One of the worst post-Covid issues I have is that I can’t taste bitter flavors anymore. Some would think this is a good thing, but all the foods and drinks I love are enhanced by their bitter flavors, so this takes a lot of the enjoyment from me.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Interesting, I don't think I've heard that one. My wife had it in 2020 and for months after that she couldn’t stand the taste of meat, other things tasted metallic, and she smelled cigarette smoke in a house with no smokers.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Well damn. I thought maybe if I got Covid I could finally drink an IPA.

One of my former employers is looking for a Laravel developer. Remote is ok in certain US states (WA, OR, ID, TX, MI, WI, IL, NY, DE) if willing to fly to WA office sometimes.

As soon as they have the job posting up on their website I'll edit this to add a link. Until then feel free to DM if interested and I can send more info or answer questions.

@ramsey I worked with .NET for 6 months in 2008. I had to remove any mention of it from my resume and it still took YEARS to stop getting emails from recruiters saying I was "perfect" for some .NET job that required 5 years of experience.

I worked with Magento briefly in 2012 and as recently as this week I still get emails for Magento roles. Bonus: The current version of Magento didn't exist the last time I used it.

I might be stating the obvious here, but LinkedIn has jumped the shark.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey On one hand they have absolutely jumped the shark like you showed. But on the other, my last job and the one I just started both happened because 1 guy searched LI for PHP developers near his town and found me. It can be useful, but there's so much noise to cut through.

@GottaLaff She’s got another event on 1/6 (linked in that article) that features a convicted Jan 6th terrorist.

It sure would be a shame if we all reported that event on Eventbrite who is apparently ok with their platform being used to organize it.

Welp, there goes jumping on the bandwagon with an updated TOS where you have no choice but to let them use your data to train their model. At least I have a month to find an alternative.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

I contacted to ask if there was a way to opt-out of their new TOS forcing users to hand over private data to train their AI model. This was their unsurprising, but still ridiculous response:

"We are not offering an opt-out, but as mentioned in our blog, we are committed to having controls around customer privacy and confidentiality as we integrate AI into Sentry.”

If you want to let them know how you feel about the new TOS, the email address is: legal-support@sentry.io

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey Yeah I saw that. For myself I was about to sign up 1 or 2 new accounts for contracts I'm working on so the only option is hand over their data, or find another option. That's at least good for anyone with an existing subscription though.

thomas,
@thomas@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey I'm pragmatic enough to know it's where everything is headed, but principled and stubborn enough to not go without fighting 😂
