Is it just me, or has Microsoft gone completely crazy? They are implementing spyware that takes screenshots every second and forcing AI integration. Why would anyone willingly purchase this? Anyone with experience in computer or information security knows that it is a bad idea, even if it is locally done. Just don't do it. Yet, here we are, and they are doubling down on this idea. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-new-recall-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/

@nixCraft meanwhile we are happily using #github. Move to #gitlab already!

@JorisMeys @nixCraft There is Linux, you don't need anything else.

@JorisMeys @nixCraft your mom can (probably) run Linux Mint just fine.

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@JorisMeys @nixCraft can she use Windows on her own?
Well - doesn't matter either. I just think user friendly Linux helps more than the next corporate bs

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@JorisMeys @nixCraft I also don't use Ubuntu/Linux mint. But calling Linux hard because someone can't use it who also can't (really)use Windows doesn't make that much sense to me.
She could probably open the web browser equally well on Windows and Linux.

(sorry if I over interpret things)

@bagder Great questions thought. I've had enough forms with "yes, if this is meant like this" and "well if it is done well"

@drewdevault you need a break from work, so you write an operating system to relax 😄

There are now over 3000 followers on this Mastodon account! 😎

But that's not enough! We have to beat the follower count of the Twitter account which is slightly under 9000 (and slowly decreasing)

@lutris well, can't follow more than one time ...

These are all separate vectors:

  1. VC vs user-supported
  2. Files vs databases
  3. Open vs proprietary formats
  4. Open vs closed source
  5. Extensible vs non-extensible
  6. Private vs privacy-invasive

An open source app can be VC-backed, store its data in a proprietary format, have terrible APIs, and include telemetry

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@kepano well an open app implies an open (file) format

I just found out you can middle-click the create tab button of a browser and it will search for the text in the clipboard?
Tested with Firefox and Chrom{e,ium} on Linux, could anyone test this on Windows for me? I’m curious if that’s a Linux thing or not.

Write something in Python in three days and spend the rest of your life maintaining it.

OR write it in rust in five days. You are done. Go write something else.

Change my mind, but a good looking GitHub is pretty important to me.
I had a look at GitLab again, and it seems really clean. I only fear that my projects aren’t found anymore if I switch because everyone is on GitHub…

What do you think/how do you deal with the situation?

It’s a little weird that all these open source projects rely on GitHub, a non-free proprietary service owned by Microsoft.

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel codeberg would be an obvious choice because I live in Germany and Codeberg is non-commercial…

I haven’t used it yet but have the impression that it’s much simpler (and has less features) than GitLab.
Do you have experience with Codeberg?

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel I like self-hosting, but the collaboration on GitHub is really important to me. In a perfect world Git servers would be connected just like Mastodon

If a webpage or blog requires JavaScript to render properly, I will not use it. You can keep your precious page to yourself.

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@nixCraft I do not agree. Javascript is a part of websites that their authors intended is too use, and without it, many websites won't work properly/to their full extend.

I'm not saying anyone should switch to for trifling reasons (especially if you're on a kick-butt customized tiling WM), but Konsole does all kinds of cute things like change *** so that the middle * is higher, and turn -> and --> into solid arrows. It also groups two or three repeating colons into a somewhat tighter spacing, presumably for
::: headers like this :::
(Once you get to four or more repeating colons, it reverts to monospace, otherwise the layout would get all messed up)

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@_cnt0 @RL_Dane Many terminal emulators support ligatures, but not all (for example alacritty (https://github.com/alacritty/alacritty/issues/50))

tippfehlr,
@tippfehlr@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane @_cnt0 If I'm not mistaken Jetbrains Mono doesn't support ligatures.
