"But over time, immunity ā€“ either from infection or vaccination ā€“ wanes, and eventually enough people are susceptible to becoming infected again, Professor Michael Plank says"

For now, weā€™re likely looking at more of the same, Plank says: ā€œIt is here to stayā€.

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 itā€™s not. itā€™s fucking the fuck NOT here to stay. it does NOT have to be like this. people simply need to stop living their lives so recklessly and wear a goddamn mask and give a damn about others and we could be so done with it. it could be behind us. stop giving the virus a host and it dies. thatā€™s how it works. even if everyone masked with high quality respirators like 3M Auras weā€™d see this thing PLUMMET. this is fucking madness i s2g.

after a turbulent two months of weekly visits to hospitals and EDs, my partner and i finally started feeling that we might get a break, but sometime at the hospital after her last surgery or the other hospital for my monthly visit to get pumped w chemo / immunos., we were infected with COVID.

it takes a lot for me to share personal aspects of my life anymore and even more to reach out for support, but we could both really use some TLC and a respite from the storm!

any support is welcomed and deeply appreciated šŸ–¤ solidarity!

when we (possibly unwittingly or through social pressures) made the shift to taking authoritative positions on concepts and refusing to allow them to be challenged or allowing ourselves to be open to discussing ideas, we lost the plot because thatā€™s what the internet was made for.

if weā€™re not swapping tips on how to make this declining society and difficult existence more comfy for each other, what are we doing here?

Constantly hearing ā€got tired of Mastodonā€™s technicalities, Bluesky is simple and amazingā€.

How we could design Mastodon to be more simple and have less technical-feel to it? UI is one thing, but that will not cut it all. I have probably said this before, but I am starting to believe no matter what we do we canā€™t ā€winā€. The narrative might need to change. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

@rolle a search for ā€œbluesky needsā€ on Bluesky gives you a stream of mostly already-implemented Mastodon features that Bluesky lacks.

sure, polish is one of the reasons that makes Bluesky more appealing to some, but it seems ppl are willing to sacrifice features for the fleeting dopamine and social capital they get from ā€˜invite-onlyā€™ platforms and for not feeling like theyā€™re starting over because their friends are already there. thatā€™s what made Clubhouse so popular before it died and, sans the invite aspect, thatā€™s whatā€™s led to Threads current successā€”it duplicated an existing social graph.

for Mastodon to be seen as a viable alternative, it would need to either compromise on principles (never a good move) by making some aspect exclusive or by finding a solution to helping people reconnectā€”even if theyā€™re on other instances.

their solution has been to start everyone on the same server (a familiar experience) then let people move organically from there. itā€™s not a bad move, but there needs to be another layer of beacons or importing social graphs so people can be notified when friends join, i think.

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

@rolle you have to wonder how much of that explanation is repeated because they donā€™t have a good explanation or havenā€™t collected their thoughts on it but arenā€™t confident enough to say so (which is disappointing but understandably human.)

itā€™s like when years ago people said ā€œi use android because itā€™s open and ios isnā€™tā€ but they didnā€™t know what it meant. they want a snappy, intelligent answer to give.

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

people will self-righteously condemn you for not posting about [insert new atrocity here] but can't point to any instance where they've made material changes with their actions

or worse yet, point to their protest selfies and footage that is without a doubt being scraped by LEAs and analyzed to kick off arrest warrants

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

there are entire groups of people* that take privacy & security seriously and there are countless people that go to rallies, but the overlap of people that would consider the safety implications of their actions based on insight that groups like @eff and @cldc spend years compiling for us that would -also- go to a rally and even pass that insight along amounts to a baker's dozen of people in cities the size of brooklyn (which, mind you, dwarfs most other major cities). we'd be lucky to have a handful in others.

(i refuse to use the term 'community' to describe things like this bc that's not what the word means... a community is a collection of people with whom you cultivate trust and mutual respect and support, not a fan club)

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

most of the time, we either encounter defeatist (not to be confused with nihilism) approaches to the surveillance state and true gravity of what we're up against, or it's people that have no intention of making material changes to the world and simply want to extract some social capital along the way and cash in on it while it's still valuable.

rarely do you meet people that are neither type, but if you do, hold onto them with everything you've fucking got.

Grrrrrrr, my AirPods Pro first generation are starting to crap out in the battery department. I got them in 2021, which is pretty good for these stupid modern times. I wish there was some way to replace the batteries in the buds, but thatā€™s just not possible in any ear buds, not just Appleā€™s. No wonder the planet is going to hell in a hand cart, stuff is just made to be thrown away now.

If the new limits on free plans don't work for you, you can store all your passwords in Proton Pass: https://proton.me/blog/dashlane-alternative

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

@protonmail if a user stores their Proton credentials in Pass and then their subscription lapses, how do they log in to their account to pay the invoice? do they have to resort to recovery keys?

it seems more realistic for a paying subscriber to use the free version of pass on a second account than risk being locked out of accounts. it makes the Pass experience feel like users are just renting a glorified digital storage locker where your belongings are held ransom for payment.

tothedaring,
@tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

@protonmail right. and that seems obvious to more technically-adept users like you (the person replying) and me, but most likely not to most users, iā€™d be willing to bet. itā€™s absent from any documentation (like the import guides) iā€™ve read so far.

    @maddy @thisismissem i think it's easy for us to say we should boycott Spotify since there's a new reason every few weeks, but it's harder to implement.

    i think the strategy instead needs to be encouraging people to be reaching out to their fav artistsā€”big and smallā€”to encourage them to help us make the leap by supporting efforts to build artist-managed platforms like what @radiofreefedi @jessica are doing with and what @ajroach42 & @djsundog have in the works with a fediverse model.

    think about it... we can't take them on head to head, but if we get enough of the smaller artists talking that it gets a Janelle MonƔe or Taylor talking to fans about it? the clowns at Spotify will suddenly have a big problem on their hands

    tothedaring,
    @tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

    @thisismissem youā€™re right, but iā€™m not sure what that has to do with these platform execs making millions more each year yet decreasing payouts to artists.

    swapping one capitalist for a marginally better one isnā€™t going to save us.

    More likely to report symptoms for a long time if they were female, had severe initial symptoms, were infected earlier in the pandemic, or had pre-existing health conditions.

    I'm curious to hear what other people think of 1Password's handling of the breach of its Okta panel. The company didn't disclose even bare-bones details until after I emailed them asking about it. Then they released only bare-bones details that left out important stuff, like the hackers adding a new ID provider to their Okta dashboard.

    Then, rather than provide an up-to-date account of the event, including investigators' latest findings, the company releases a week-old status report.

    I have come to expect more transparency from 1Password. Why didn't the company proactively disclose the event? Why isn't it providing updated findings regarding the employee MacBook that was suspected of being compromised? Why did 1Password learn of the breach only after receiving an email alert that someone (who had already obtained administrative access) requested a report? All this uncertainty just leaves open doubts and suspicions and undoes years of trust people have developed in the company.

    I've heard lots of people praise 1Password's response. What am I missing? Am I being unfair?

    @Wednesday always has helpful insights on matters like this, so I'm cc'ing her, but am interested in what others think as well.

    tothedaring,
    @tothedaring@kolektiva.social avatar

    @dangoodin @Wednesday @glightly from an industry newbie / outsiderā€™s PoV, it was far too minor a breach not to throw everything they had at it to stress-test their response flow. at worst, theyā€™d have solidified the trust people have given them and it would have been free marketing material, like ā€œyou trusted us and we value thatā€”hereā€™s a look at what we do to maintain it, no matter the severityā€.

    and given the breadth of orgs deploying Okta, it seems like an operational security gaffe to pass the report around on yet another third party platformā€”and one thatā€™s unencrypted no less. not securing what you know about an attack, how youā€™re combatting it, and which industry partners should be notified to prevent a cascade of related attacks is a strategic failure imo.
