Debating with myself whether <Flex> and <Stack> components are an antipattern... I keep finding spots in our app where we've ended up with like ten nested flexboxes where one or two would accomplish the exact same result.

Is this just a devs-not-knowing-CSS problem, or does the abstraction invite abuse?

troy,
@troy@opencoaster.net avatar

@keithjgrant Goes back to the excess wrapping divs we've dealt with long before react was around. I think it's a lot of laziness, lot of not caring, lot of not knowing what they're doing, bad tooling...

    @virtualbri Wonder if it'll be more popular than their (admittedly pretty good) Bay Theater. Last time I went, I did a marathon all day and I and a friend were the only ones there all day, and they kept the kitchen open the entire time.

    I get why they'll lose money on running a theater, but whats the point of these "Bites" locations? Whose the target?

    Are there any good Javascript libraries for working with ActivityPub? Need something for an upcoming project. Will be used with NextJS.

    I bought an Embody Chair not very long after they came out, went to look at buying another one and nearly choked on the price. WTH?

    @paul they had some at the DWR outlet for around 400 a few months ago and I’m hating myself for not grabbing one.

    The Explore tab on Mastodon really wasn't built for smaller instances... which seems a bit counter intuitive.

    The posts (trending posts) decay very quickly and if you have a smaller instance it basically empties that list out a bit too quickly.

    There should be a setting in the admin panel to let admins decide on how quickly posts in the Explore tab decay.

    troy,
    @troy@opencoaster.net avatar

    @mikey It would be nice if it also pulled in the top x posts from federated instances and blended them together

    Every time I open Apple News I’m reminded just how bad publications are. It’s 99% fluff/sponsored garbage. These companies wonder why revenue is down and they’ll go and blame Google or Facebook or ad blockers but they’re not looking at their own content. I’ve seen a few just scrolling that were definitely gpt generated.

    My Tesla is almost 5 years old now and its safe to say I won't be upgrading to a newer model... but I for sure am sad that I can't find an electric vehicle that ticks all my boxes.

    I feel like other manufacturers are getting so close to making something that can pull me away, but they need a few more years of perfecting it.

    troy,
    @troy@opencoaster.net avatar

    @mikey I had to look the other way when I bought this last one. The other companies still got some catching up to do and with everyone switching to the Tesla connector doesn’t make sense to switch right now especially if you’re already in the eco system. I realllly want a Rivian though.

    Online storage is so cheap these days. No one should be hosting public files directly from their server unless it's a static or small website. Throw those files in an object store like S3 or something compatible and call it a day.

    My small instance is using about 1.2TB of space (I delete remote media 6 months old that hasn't been interacted with). With that I pay about $3 a month for storage.

    troy,
    @troy@opencoaster.net avatar

    @mikey Where are you hosting them? I had s3 set up but my bill ended up going into the hundreds very fast.

    troy,
    @troy@opencoaster.net avatar

    @mikey it was the transfer that got me. Been thinking of using b2 since it’s waaaaaaay cheaper and really want a cdn but that too was like legit 900+ in Jan 😅😅

    As a Midwesterner, it is absolutely bonkers to me how common it appears to be for HVAC systems to get installed in attics.

    Don't do that. Stop doing that! WTF?

    That's bad enough, but then you go and run the ducts up there, too?

    Y'all.

    If you keep the system and the ducts within the space you're trying to heat and cool, you don't have to account for any losses, now, do ya?

    Put the air handler in a utility closet. Run ducts /below/ the ceiling. Enclose with soffiting if you must.

    The end.

    troy,
    @troy@opencoaster.net avatar

    @TechConnectify I agree! Very common here in California and I just assumed it was some HOA/Don't wanna see it mentality. Worse is they added two heaters here that are larger than the attic door and they're both needing to be replaced. Going to be very expensive for no reason.

    Dinner tonight from was to try the with chicken and andouille sausage. Except there's not a spec of sausage in my dish. As you can see, I even dug around.

    Hey, @disneyland @DisneyParks , y'all owe me some andouille sausage!

    The dish is still very tasty, though, and does have some heat that might not work for some.
