TIL about the unit, the shaku (尺), an old Japanese measure derived from the distance between 2 growth nodes of a bamboo stem (about 30.30cm). 🎍

I happened to have a bit of bamboo lying around, and it is indeed 30cm. 🤯

It feels so meaningful to me when I see some dangerous debris on the bike path, and I slow down & stop, and take the time to move it off the path, so future cyclists don't need to worry about it.

I think about how important and undervalued maintenance is in the dominant culture. Building new things gets all of the glory, when it's the maintainers and acts of service that are what truly, imo, make this world work.

My understanding is yes, the flax is soaked in water for a time ("retting") to help separate the fibres from the rest of the material. I didn't realize lignin was also dissolved by this.

I was told by a peer that the caustic soda that linen is commercially soaked in now is actually done to soften it, at the expense of the fabric's lifetime.

The notes and accounts from the FediForum in late September suggest that some of "the people who move the fediverse forward", as the conference promotes itself as platforming, are also acutely interested in moving forward the agenda of Meta.

Aaah textiles are magic! ✨

I spent the afternoon today learning a bunch of textile skills & tech, some of which are from the indigenous folx where I am living. It was so rad! Wool dying, carding, spinning, and weaving!

It feels so magical, finally understanding the process that goes from "grow a plant from the ground" all the way to "here is fabric". 🤯

I've known this crow (waterboy) for about a year now. We see each other most mornings when he comes by. I give him a peanut. We have a whole routine about how we do it.

I know him by his body language, and by the missing talon on his right foot.

I supported him during his last nesting cycle. I know his daughter and give her peanuts too. I've been loving seeing her grow up.

Today I noticed how comfortable waterboy and I seem to feel around each other. He's not panicky when I come near, like other crows. I can tell there is some trust between us.

I love this crow. 🖤

why do other trans people have such cool life stories

I didn't try on my mom's clothes
I didn't hang out with the girls at school
I didn't play with makeup
I didn't "act like a girl"
I didn't hate my name
I didn't cross dress
I didn't let myself look inwards
I didn't get told "we always suspected" when I came out

I didn't know

I just felt sad and wrong and I didn't know why.
I was hollow and my emotions didn't make sense
every relationship I tried went sour because I didn't feel anything

if I didn't get that time during covid to really think, I might never have figured it out. I might have gone my entire life as a sad but ok most of the time, guy

it always hurts when I read or hear some trans person's journey as they recount every instance where it was "clearly a sign" and they were just born in the wrong body and they were basically a girl anyway and...

because of this, I just never related to these few trans people I saw in the public eye. I thought of it as this rare disorder that was for therapists to diagnose

it took me a while to realize it wasn't about who I had been. It was about who I wanted to become

@ivy I've felt this way about a lot of the "mainstream trans narratives". I hate that even within the trans community there's this idea of "the one right way to be". I had no real idea either until it just //hit me// four years ago. :trans_heart:
