Formerly known as SndChaser on several networks, I spent years working in #IT and #Tech. However, since the pandemic I have switched to #writing and explore of my love of #music, #audio and numerous other topics. Recently I have found a love for #games and #gamedev, more specifically an interest in #vn / #visualnovels. Check out my links below for my information about my various websites and projects. #fedi22

I've actually been on the #Fediverse since 2019. I migrated to calckey.social about a month ago. Lately most of my posting has been about #Twitter and the #Fediverse. (It's a sickness - I know - hopefully I'll recover someday...)

Fun little interoperability problem I've discovered today: and have different max-length's on their Moderation Report comment fields.

CalcKey's report comments can be up to 2048 characters. Mastodon has a maximum of 1000 characters.

Currently if a CalcKey report with a >1000 character comment was to be sent to Mastodon, Mastodon would fail to receive it.

There might be other interoperability issues here too!

unattributed,

@thisismissem this definitely sounds like an issue that needs to be ironed-out. My take: I'd prefer to see Mastodon support longer reports. It makes sense that we can get as much information when possible when taking a report.

So why use ( Flavoured Markdown) and all of the animation power it provides (on eg)?

... Because where we're going ... we don't need words!

This was literally the top of my timeline just now (the actual animation goes on much longer than this):

5 second video (GIF) clip. Footage of a screen recording of Calckey, where the same post is being viewed twice (because of boosting). The post contains only emojis, including jellyfish, fish and cats, that have been animated to jiggle and float around the whole post window as though they are in an aquarium.

unattributed,

@maegul While I appreciate the creativity that is being put into the use of MFM, I have to wonder how it affects people with accessibility concerns. I've been told in the past that things like Wordle result posts are a PITA for screen readers.

So it looks like home.social is going to shut down this year (see announcement below).

That’s a 36k user instance. Along with mastodon.lol recently, are mid-sized instances feeling the strain? Are they naturally unsustainable, at least without the right infrastructure.

I’m betting single admin mid-sized instances are unsustainable.

could easily have struggled to survive recently if it weren’t for its co-op org.

unattributed,

@nelliek @maegul @quadrivial @fediversenews I think they are talking about some of the recent drama around instance blocking that's happened / fediblock... Which is, IMO, a sign of the growth pains the Fediverse is going through.

unattributed,

@maegul @quadrivial @fediversenews @nelliek No surprise to me. There's also the matter that some don't post block lists. And in some cases when they do post them they are missing reasons for the block.

And the approach to moderation isn't scaling all that well. (Not to mention the complexity involved in moderation.)

I have no doubt that things will work out eventually. But in the mean time trying to find a way for instances to scale to a reasonable size while being sustainable seems to be the big challenge.

This is a bad idea. Content warnings are need for a lot of reasons, especially for posts that cause accessibility issues.

Fucking Christ the @protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit I've ever looked at. It is complex solely for the sake of being complex and still suffers from all of the same problems as Mastodon.

Your server goes down? Sorry, all of your followers are lost. Account portability is no better than Mastodon. 'DIDs' serve literally no purpose. And none of the API code that Bluesky uses in their own app validates ANY of the crypto they're doing on the server. NONE OF IT.

unattributed,

@sam imagine they tried to implement the auto delete feature of an app like Mastodon (not certain if others have implemented this type of feature). Wouldn't something like this basically be hammering the indexer constantly? And wouldn't it potentially bring about even more edge cases?
