@mastodonmigration I got it. Thank you. The search screens were a little convoluted to me.

Every time you hear the Reddit CEO talking about how they need to become profitable, remember they raised $250m and then spent the last couple years building this: https://nft.reddit.com

@robotdeathsquad I never understood it when it launched. Seemed like a dumb thing that no one outside of the crypto bros wanted. What a waste of effort.

Researchers discover that ChatGPT prefers repeating 25 jokes over and over

When tested, "Over 90% of 1,008 generated jokes were the same 25 jokes."

"Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early users. ‘We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run,’ a top exec told employees."

This is how you do marketing, take notice. We need to get our act together, otherwise Meta will be the default marketing department for the Fediverse, and that would be ... suboptimal.

@J12t @jdp23 this is where the centralization helps them. They have power and money to sway the public. It’s a genius move on their part. As I’ve thought about it more and more, their AT integration is probably a move to become the largest federation instantly and then have outsized control over the network.

This is going to be a mess.

Interesting find:

"Despite Mastodon’s decentralized architecture, we found that the 25% of the largest instances on Mastodon contains 96% of the users....

Paradoxically, while larger instances attract more users, smaller ones attract more active users, reinforcing Mastodon’s decentralization."

...We observed the impact of social network in migration, with an average of 14.72% of Twitter followees per user migrating to the exact same Mastodon instance as user."

veedems,
@veedems@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers it’ll be interesting to see if the continued decline of Twitter, aka the original digital public square, brings on the sustainable rise of Mastodon as a true public square of thought. There’s going to be a Wild West period, at some point, and if it can survive that, I think it continues long term on a large enough scale.

Meta beats Apple to the mixed-reality punch with $499 Quest 3 coming this fall

Quest 2's starting price is also going back down to $299.

veedems,

@arstechnica my only question with devices like the Quest is simple: What’s the killer application? It just seems like a different video game console.

Anytime someone tries to answer the question, you get theoretical, but never actual. I wonder if Apple will be able to answer it.

@arstechnica holy…$1600 for a robot vacuum without a self emptying base. A base is like the basic ticket to entry, these days.

veedems,

@paul as much as I hate to admit it, this will probably become VERY popular. Users will have an already populated timeline and follow list and Gram creators will have an existing base to build connection with. Unless Meta totally botches this, it could be a huge blow to Twitter.
