Do not trust anyone who is encouraging crypto-as-the-backbone of a social network. Especially if they have an extremely long, Unabomber-style beard and a billion dollars.

@ai6yr Crypto meaning resource-intensive random problem-solving distributed-but-not ledgers not cryptography, right?

@Nonilex How is a severance agreement like this not a crime in itself? Sounds like obstruction of justice to this amateur

I'm tired of people using the term "podcast" when I can't find it at the place where I get my podcasts.

@davew It's only a Podcast if it comes from the RSS region of the internet, otherwise it's just sparkling spotify

@LoneLocust It's not an easy problem to convert voltage to capacity since it mostly happens in the last 15%

@bookstodon Recently, Libby has changed (for me). I can no longer return an e-book directly through Libby, if I have sent it to my Kindle. I have to return it through Kindle. Is this also true of other e-book library services?

vees,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon This just changed for me as well. It makes it more difficult for me to be courteous, which is exactly what the book vendor wants, since then the library needs to license more digital copies of certain books to meet demand.

my mom checked out of autumn lake rehab in #baltimore back in January and they had the audacity to go to social security administration to change her address back to theirs and claim guardianship. i’ve gotta get another lawyer AGAIN! one of the most disgusting nursing homes i’ve ever been to in my life.

Solid piece on why we’re not buying Chinese EVs in the U.S. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/06/1248065838/cheap-chinese-evs-us-buy-byd-electric-vehicles It goes through the basics (upgrades required for safety, tariffs, etc.), but then ALSO gets into labor: suppressed wages plus forced/slave labor on top of subsidies. Doesn’t mention Chinese lack of environmental regulation in manufacturing (despite some laws on the books). I picture trying to get warranty service—already a pain with companies based in the U.S. or Europe.

vees,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@glennf The “warranty” on any manufactured product I’ve ever bought direct from China is either 1) its so inexpensive that I’d just eat the cost or 2) the vendor is bespoke enough that they’re willing to ship a new one as a good-faith gesture to preserve reputation in the community. Doesn’t scale well, as a rule.

@StillIRise1963 Saw a lot of comments here yesterday about how supreme court advocates are always thinking about the next case they'll need to try in front of the court and are especially careful not to burn any bridges in their current one

@StillIRise1963 Advocates succeed when their clients succeed, so I at least understand the tightrope even if I totally agree with your inclination that they should have gone scorched earth on this case

Dude contacts me because he's watched a YouTube clip and has picked up some folk pseudohistory about his home area. Shows me his family tree which has him descending from a fictional regional ruler. When I tell him I think that's just imagination, he asks me to explain why I "assume" so. "Hello professional research scholar, please deliver a detailed critique of the amateur theory I believe in." I just blocked him, can't be bothered, not my job.

Lol someone tried to bruteforce my Wendy's login account. Nice try, reminded me to roll new passwords, so better luck next time, because now they are much much longer passwords I am generating these days.

I'll roll keys and passwords entirely once @protonprivacy has an offline password manager app for Linux. I don't want to use my browser if I can avoid it.

vees,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@chiefgyk3d But, why? Also more likely credential stuffing than brute forcing, no?

vees,

@chiefgyk3d but what practical purpose does one get out of hijacking another person’s Wendy account?
