You Can’t Do That on Television (1979) was in retrospect the first indication of my mild face blindness because I genuinely thought Les Lye was like twenty different actors. I only finally realized that my brain works differently when I looked up the Austin Powers actors in 1997 and realized how many roles Mike Myers played.

LOL. This plumber does great work, but man, does he have opinions.

"You really should get rid of this s*** in your yard"

"Yeah, I know, we JUST HAD OUR ENTIRE HOUSE FLOODED OUT and we threw a bunch of stuff out there."

"Well, I'm not like you, I am always moving and working, I would have hauled that stuff away by now."

(Left him to his own devices so I don't need to hear any more... last time he called me a "slumlord")

The weather here is... hilarious? Low of -1C tonight, high of -1 tomorrow dropping to -30s windchill for 2 nights, then up to a high of 7(!) for one day, then back to average Feb temps.

This is undoubtedly exacerbated by climate change, but these temperature swings and ranges are well within historical normals - 40-50C range of recorded temps on any day of the year. (This is, again, part of the reason many people on the prairies don't believe in climate change... hard to see in the std dev)

I wonder about two specific moments inside Mike Lindell's brain - when he thought offering a $5 million prize for proving him wrong was a good idea (was it "nobody will prove me wrong because I genuinely believe right" or "This is just a bombastic thing I'll never have to pay that bolsters my cause/grift") and when the judgement came down that he had to pay it out (was it finally, privately, on some level "Oops I fucked up" or still "no, its the children that are wrong"?).

This was a good evening for upgrading and updating my toys.

Up side: Router and a few play test machines are now at their latest OS and app versions. IPv6 routing to those servers is a little more resilient.

Down side: The reminder that my home network and infrastructure is essentially a toothpick and bubble gum structure on a windy day in an earthquake.

Most things appear to be back online. I'm certain I've forgotten about one or two.

Admins: Remember to check your emoji libraries for the words "windmill" and "friendship" and suspend any instance that allows Nazi symbols in their custom emoji set.

vees,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@jens @target @cstross The key point to this discussion that we’re ignoring (to make a joke but I want to be clear anyway) is that every custom emoji is either approved by the instance admin or one of their delegates. Any random user can post an offensive image or ascii art but the owner might not be aware and you can report and block that person. Custom emoji represent the instance as a whole so you can feel confident to block that instance.

@jens @target @cstross For sure not the participants but possibly someone just reading along that doesn’t know the tech details. Anyway bottom line is that Mastodon needs ANSI art code support.

Dear / folks: Does the community have any experience or guidance about incorporating a nonprofit entity to manage a fedi server?

Building a charitable nonprofit to legally hold and maintain a medium-sized, community-serving instance strikes me as a good idea, along the lines of a charity that runs a small public garden. (We have a lot of these, in New York…)

I'm interested to hear any stories or advice folks might have about this!

vees,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@jmac Sounds like you're going into this with eyes open. If it was just a distribution of responsibility and ownership I would say don't bother, but you enumerated a bunch of good reasons.
