Yesterday I nearly bought a thermometer but realised just in time that it comes with an app. Oh hell no. I would like a much much stupider thermometer, please.

Hashtag not all software people or whatever, but I think it's funny that software people often hate software the most.

I'm fascinated by the phenomenon where someone is pushing to add a formal process for something because they don't want to talk to the one person who's doing the thing wrong. Signing the whole industry up for a conflict management course.

A roadrunner just walked through my garden. It looked over and it was like "hey" and I was like "hey" and it went back to its walk and I went back to my meeting. Also a Cooper's hawk keeps sitting up on the trees behind the wall and screaming at things. And there are huge blue dragonflies and huge yellow butterflies and tiny green-brown lizards.

is delivering so far. I like it here.

Sunday night I wore a cute dress and watercolor makeup to match and I was super happy about how it turned out

Some kind of Darmock and Jalad at Tanagra thing where you respond to messages with just the chatgpt prompt you would have used to write the response ๐Ÿค”

Like imagine you get an email inviting you to a party and you reply with

"a friendly response declining the invitation but being clear that you like the person and are just busy, not avoiding them"

You know when you look at things? And things are broken? And then you have to fix them because you looked at them?

If you sent me a mail and I didn't reply to it it's because my email backlog is currently so long that I'm considering faking my own death to escape it.

whereistanya,

@hazelweakly It's weird to me how much easier it is to do DMs/Slack/whatever than email. Something about email raises the stakes and makes the task expensive in brain cycles.

Like, I was introducing two people last week and they agreed to be introduced via Whatsapp instead of email, and it's bizarre how much that reduced the cost of the "introduce two nice people to each other" operation. It was easy and pleasant instead of being a chore. What's that about?

House-moving update:

Our nice espresso machine (codename: the Breville Jonk Jonk) is still in Brooklyn, and we're not getting movers for another few weeks. So today we bought an electric moka pot and we finally have the ability to make coffee. Hallelujah!

Also the IKEA delivery arrived an hour ago so soon I can stop taking meetings sitting on the floor of my empty office.

It's a very exciting day over here, that's what I'm saying.

I forgot to say: the Staff Engineer's Path audiobook has been re-recorded and is once again available from wherever you like to buy audiobooks.

https://libro.fm/audiobooks/9781663730343-the-staff-engineer-s-path

I personally recommend https://libro.fm because you can support your local bookshop with the purchase. But it's available from the various megacorps too.

Somehow we have two unrelated plumbing situations at the same time. Why even are houses?

whereistanya,
@whereistanya@hachyderm.io avatar

My analysis of the bathtub-related plumbing situation:

  • we're not solving this without breaking the silicon/whatever sticks bathtubs to walls, and pulling the bathtub out from the wall
  • we're also going to need to replace the side panel of the bathtub
  • even then and even with my epic new pipe wrench, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to open these rusty fixtures
  • the underside of a bathtub is fucking disgusting
whereistanya,
@whereistanya@hachyderm.io avatar

My analysis of the cistern-related plumbing situation:

  • I need to go into the attic, which is full of bats, and I don't really want to
whereistanya,
@whereistanya@hachyderm.io avatar

(I'm not scared of bats, but I feel like trying to debug a pressure tank blockage in bad light while bats fly around your head is not an optimal bat situation.)

I was a sysadmin in olden times. This situation is not that different I guess.
