Bipolar gay guy in the Caribbean, with two dogs and a garden with a mango tree.

Functionally disabled these days due to med resistant depression. Ex-cyclist / runner. Letting life go by while I putter in the garden and keep my dogs happy.

Bipolar for 40 years, diagnosed for 25. Blogging about it for 20 years.

I talk openly about my experiences. Ask me about depression or hypomania or being bipolar, including about sensitive topics. You aren't alone.

Be kind.

Today I learned there are six places where cities emerged independently of any other centre, the so-called 'pristine civilizations,'

Fertile Crescent, Mesopotamia
Nile Valley
Indo-Gangetic Plain
North China Plain
Andean Coast
Mesoamerican Gulf Coast

I feel like we should try terraforming Earth, first.

whiteice,

@Binder
Too late! Already done.

whiteice,

@Binder
What benchmarks for improvement would we be using?

whiteice,

@Binder
Maybe we should use number of butterflies per square kilometre.

Is there a consensus as to what we are iterating towards, exactly?

whiteice,

@Binder
In the novel the Uplift War
(David Brin), the resistance fighters deliberately assemble in an exposed position showing their willingness to die rather than allow further acts of war to damage the planets (Garth) already damaged ecosystems.

Humanity is not the most important element, the ecology is.

Caterpillars for the Pseudosphinx Tetrio Hawk Moth. They are large, brightly coloured, and they hiss at you when approached. They're also somewhat toxic and have hairs that irritate the skin. But so cute!!

In caterpillar season, the entire frangipani tree is covered in them and you can hear them munching. They eat all the leaves off the tree, though it never seemed to be harmed by this.

Things one finds in the kitchen sink. Hawk moth. Happens when you have a frangipani / plumeria tree in the back yard. I gently carried it outside after taking the photo.

Photo as taken. No colour adjustment.

Indeed. The frangipani tree and flowers are beautiful in their own right, but you also get these caterpillars moths too.

It's Bandcamp Friday but it's also rent day and I'm beyond broke, so onto the next.

Also, Bandcamp has locked me out of my main account for some reason, it says it'll send me an email to get back in but it never sends it. Sent THEM an email to try and get it sorted out but who even knows. Account may just be gone. As usual. Modern websites and services. Garbage.

So I've been using a backup account. Not impressed, Bandcamp

If you're using an adblocker, this could be the reason you're getting the email.

Looking out from The Abbey of Our Lady of Exile - a Benedictine monastery.

Here at the monastery you can see from one side of the country to the other on a clear day.

This morning my phone was like "hey, medication reminder" and i was like "nah, i took those. wait... did i?"

I reached over for my pill container with it's morning and night sections. nope.

At that moment I was really thankful. My 🧠 has a real problem with time and memory.

As an adult, learning to make accommodations for that, for being , & other needs, despite what society might say about it is one of the hardest lessons.

whiteice,

@masukomi
Too true. Surprisingly, I've found that once I explained what I needed, my friends were more than willing to accommodate me. Though telling others what you need can be a problem if you also have bad anxiety.

My parents were, and are, the hardest to cope with. They so want me to be okay and doing well that they often blind themselves to accommodations I need to make.

Be comfortable with yourself, whatever that might be, and have a good Friday!

Reminder that on a Blue Moon, werewolves grow to 17% larger in size. The chains you generally use to bind your friends or family members may not be sufficient, so dig out the heavy duty ones.

Don't forget to check for moonrise time in your area.

The Sunday morning I carried the dogs to the beach and we came across newly hatched turtles aiming for the sea. We spent about 20 minutes chasing off predator birds so they could make it into the waves.

Probably Leatherback Turtles.

Found Devka in my photo archives. Black Russian Terriers have absolutely beautiful eyes and Devka was an adorable, photogenic teddy bear. Also 130 lbs (60 kg) and attack trained. But SO CUTE!!!

  1. Get annoyed by someone using the 'wrong word' in English.

  2. Look up the right word.

  3. See that it derives from exactly the same root as the 'wrong' word.

  4. See that British newspapers just made an artificial division between the words in like 1927... or some English person translated the exact same Low German word two slightly different ways in 1703 for no reason at all.

  5. Give up seeing them as wrong and right words.

whiteice,

@Loukas
Does anyone else use "good night" as a greeting, as opposed to a farewell?

whiteice,

@Loukas
Common / standard on my Caribbean island. Night falls early and quickly so the day goes from afternoon to night. Evening isn't a well understood concept here.

"Good evening" and "good night" are almost interchangeable. "Good night" is also both a greeting and a farewell.

What do you all say when you meet someone at night?

whiteice,

@Loukas
I'm at 10 degrees north latitude. Annual sunset varies about 45 minutes and it's always full dark about an hour after sunset. So light / dark times are stable and can be described by afternoon and night.

Maybe for us "evening" has a vague meaning and "good evening" is splitting into "good afternoon" and "good night".

"Good evening" and "good afternoon" are already both a greeting and a farewell. But when we use "good night" as a greeting too, we confound northern English speakers.

Ya know, if you write a few paragraphs on this that go viral on Reddit and the X thing, it'll become true to LLMs.

One of my weird quirks is I can't listen to music in the background. It hugely distracts from what I'm doing and so becomes irritating.

I like music, but my world is free of it unless my main task is listening to music, or at movies, concerts, clubbing, etc.. I don't even listen to music in a car.

I get the same problem with television in the background, even if it's muted. Changing background visuals are as distracting as music.

whiteice,

@franktaber @jake4480

Not a musician of any type or skill level.

My quirk seems related to being bipolar - I have difficulty filtering / managing sensory input. I can't make background music background - it's always something my brain actively engages with.

I get distracted if people are talking in the background as well - I get pulled into the conversation (not socially useful).

This doesn't seem a purely bipolar symptom - people with ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders have similar issues.

whiteice,

@jake4480 @franktaber
"too affected by music" isn't a bad description of one of the hypomania symptoms. Just saying.

When I do listen to music, it's usually at full volume, so it becomes the world. Think being in a club dancing to trance music.

Sorry about the depression. Hope you have meds that help you control it.
