So, before picks were cellulose, they were tortoiseshell. You don't see real tortoiseshell much, outside of antique shops and such because endangered.

But some players, in my experience bluegrass players, will cut up old combs for picks because, for what they play and in their tradition, tortoise sounds best. I play Ultex after hearing it's the next best thing.

And now I see these. I'm curious, and suspicious.

@jacobydave Given that tortoiseshell has been illegal for picks in the US for about 40 years now, I wonder how many musicians, regardless of focus, have done side-by-side testing of sound for the picks, specifically, independent of other factors.

I respect having a respect for history, but if I, personally, can't hear a difference, then I don't particularly care whether there is a difference, you know?

whitneymcn,

@ElleGray Oh, flashbacks, okay!

My English teacher, senior year of high school, introducing me to a student teacher: "and this is Whitney, he can really write up a storm...[mock angry look at me]...even about nothing!"

Me, 17 years old: "No, that's not true -- ESPECIALLY about nothing!"

[Entire class, including teacher, bursts into laugher.]

While -- to be fair to me -- that comeback was brilliant, in hindsight maybe I should have thought more about the advice offered in the subtext.

One of the worst cons ever pulled on me in my adolescence and early adulthood was the idea that there exists such a thing as “good debt.”

whitneymcn,
@whitneymcn@mastodon.xyz avatar

@HeavenlyPossum It exists, but only when you already have so much money that your financial advisors are the ones actually worrying about the issue, rather than you.

@misc On the plus side: the knife will very likely forgive you.

I haven't always been careful with the chef's knife I received for college graduation, 30 years ago, and even with "I usually try to remember to treat it well" as the baseline it's still in good shape today.

I sang "1135809" to the tune of "867-5309" making a silly joke an hour ago, and just now realized that I still remember the number. I've accidentally memorized his prisoner number! And now you have too*. Sorry!

The human brain works in weird ways.
