SCOTUS declaring this illegal in 3...2...1!

What happened to "stoner" comedies?

Half-Baked. Happy Gilmore. Billy Madison. Grandma’s Boy. Dude, Where’s My Car? Where have the movies like this gone? Clerks 3 was, I think, the last good one I’ve ever seen (and even they got too real and too sad so I don’t even know if I ever want to see it again as a comedy). There’s gotta be some good, funny shit...

Right‽

The movie was unbelievably dumb and personally I loved it! Dunno what that guy wanted/expected out of the movie, but I feel like it delivered on what the title promised me

Floppy emulators for old hardware are a thing too ... I think the larger risk is just that the hardware is ancient and it's better to plan to replace it as just part of a plan rather than wait for it to become an emergency replacement instead that'll cost a ton more to do in a hurry.

We're a non-iPhone household and went with the AppleTV when my Nvidia SHIELD died.

Ads were getting put on the SHIELD and I definitely didn't want to buy another one because of that and it has been a while since its had a refresh, so went with an AppleTV instead.

The device itself is fantastic, the UI is so smooth and so much nicer. OTOH, I miss being able to cast to the TV more than I expected. It works decently with the Macbooks though (we're a weird household ... like Macs, hate iPhones).

So ... if ya'll have iPhones or don't care about casting, I'd definitely recommend an AppleTV with Plex (the Dropout, Youtube, Disney+ apps are all good too).

ETA: Apple is also making some pretty awesome TV content as well and IIRC you'll get a couple months free with the purchase ... verify that yourself though in case they've removed it, but Foundation, Severance & See are fantastic shows if you're looking for something to watch.

You specifically said you use a 3rd party launcher. You know why you specifically mentioned that.

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

My SHIELD would just randomly restart itself until eventually it stopped coming back online.

I definitely got my monies worth out of it, but didn't like that a device with no ads all of a sudden became a device with ads (and this is a Google thing not an Nvidia one, but still)

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Yeah I used to have a PC and a Harmony remote that would send macros to a custom script and Kodi would do different things or it could switch to Netflix and ... Like, we just want to watch a movie or TV show not have to perform tech support whenever Netflix changed their webpage!

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Ah, my apologies for the assumption, it's been almost a year but I'm still too used to Reddit apparently!

Yes, the default launcher had ads, the SHIELD itself didn't, but I also didn't like any of the 3rd party launchers I used but I don't remember specifically why. Then, the SHIELD stopped booting so I didn't want to buy another one and went with the ATV instead.

As I mentioned, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to someone who knows they'd regret not having the cast functionality, but, if you just want a device that works very well and doesn't ever have so much as a hiccup during navigation, it's been great!

I would still recommend the SHIELD for someone that wants cast or who wouldn't have a problem with (mostly) relevant ads being shown on the device (stock).

Dishwashers are a luxury, but they also use a LOT less water than you'll use manually washing dishes and (as long as you clean their filters and use the right detergent) generally do about as well as a bored person doing the dishes will do (ie every now and then you'll find one with gunk but not too frequently).

Personally, my household has 3 adults and I would go for the full size dishwasher and figure something else out for storage ... It's also possible the smaller ones might be perfect for baking sheets and whatnot. If you haven't, try to do a mock layout with painters/masking tape and see what you can make fit in that space to try and help with planning, if you can.

With all that said, worst case scenario if no one wants to manually wash dishes, you have to run it twice in one day, every now and then, which doesn't seem horrible.

As long as you're not talking about throwing Molotov Cocktails at their CEOs, I don't really see how that would matter

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you’re still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying “well I buy a cheap used laptop” or “well I buy...

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Yup, my last 2 MBP laptops have been from a junk pile and came to me free/cheap from a buddy who was able to grab a bunch.

All in all, everything I do on a laptop is in a webui, a terminal or within a remote VM so I mostly dgaf about what it can natively run, but the hardware is great and it can load the nix (and brew) package managers, so I really haven't found much that I want it to do that it can't. Hell, even games I can just Steam Link to another machine and play if I want.

My last job was disposing of a 2021 model and I was dumb enough to ask if I could have it rather than just taking it and got told no ... Sold for scrap by the pound! I could have left a 10$ bill in it's place and theyd have gotten more profit, fucking ridiculous.

I can't imagine it was any later than 2005 at the very latest and even that seems unlikely!

These people that watch VHS ... You talking home movies that the only copy is on VHS or people actually just popping in a VHS of Jurassic Park and watching it‽

Lol, even the "if legal tender is refused" concepts are for debts and not just things you want!

Like, if they're refusing to take his money after he ate food at a restaurant, he's got a bit of a point, but if he's in the grocery store and walked out with shit, they refused a customer not a debt!

tjhart85,

The show is good too. It somehow changes just about everything and still somehow stays with the premise pretty decently.

I read the book afterwards though, YMMV on if people who did the opposite would agree!

Anything by John Scalzi, but, Old Man's War is what got me hooked.

"I did two things on my seventy-fifth birthday. I visited my wife's grave. Then I joined the army."

Here's a short story by him that might let you know if you'd like his writing style or not (note: the premise of this story was originally a joke on his blog and then he felt compelled to actually write it for real and it's easily one of my favorite short stories)
When the Yogurt Took Over: A Short Story

Anyone know of a good wiki/knowledge base software that is portable?

I have a bookstack instance self-hosted and I quick like the program and workflow. I like having ‘books’ of information to separate/organize my information. It feels very much like folder heirarchy to me, and while that has its issues, I prefer it. Being able to add tags to pages helps alleviate some of those issues and...

tjhart85,

Bookstack has a pretty robust API for things like adding/exporting content even if the UI doesn't always have a way to do things.

Might be worth looking at this ready-made script and see if it serves your purpose (at the very least just to make your shift from BS a bit easier): https://gist.github.com/ssddanbrown/45acb913a7b873240b2d89781e74a7a4

I would bet that if you investigate the author of the bill enough, you'll find that they have some kind of relationship (friends, relative, money changing hands, etc...) with someone in the list who has a vested interest in it being watered down!

Interview With a Vampire ... kind of ... Lestat was by no means good to Louis, but their portrayals in the rest of the series was quite different ... I think that Anne Rice was trying to show that neither of them should be considered reliable narrators and Louis will always try to portray his situation as awfully as possible and Lestat is a narcissist and will always try to portray himself in the best light even when acknowledging what he did incorrectly.

But, when I saw that book 2 was about Lestat, I was like ... wtf ... I hate this guy, why would I want a story with him as the main character and then I read them all, lol.

For me, you saying "hey, can I use slurs over there yet? Specifically, ___" is a bit like the dudebros that yell out "Equal rights, equal fights!" as they pretend to punch a woman ... like ... why the fuck did your mind go there immediately ... it's a bit disconcerting.

Had you said something like "Do they still have the hardcoded blocked words, still? I used to laugh whenever someone from England tried to mention cigarettes and it gets [REMOVED]! Haven't seen that in a while though" I don't think you'd have gotten the downvotes.

Just my opinion, others may have had different reasons to dislike your comment.

ETA: Your other comment wasn't showing before. You identify as the word and want to be able to use it and not have it be labeled as hate speech when it's against yourself ... So ... I'll update my "had you said" to "Hey, are they still redacting fag over there? We're trying to take that word back into the community (similar to how queer has largely been taken back) and it's real fucking hard when it's [REMOVED]!" instead.

The initial split largely seemed to be that people were submitting code fixes and Ernest wasn't accepting them or updating /KBin fast enough for them. The lack of API that was already done and approved by Ernest and ready to go (that to my knowledge still hasn't been implemented on KBin!) seemed to have been the last straw that got them traction.

Ernest doesn't want to band aid fixes, he wants to fix the underlying problems and eliminate the "tech debt" he's already accumulated rather than letting it continue to pile on to the point that fixing anything becomes unmanageable due to all the band aids. This is GOOD, but it means everything will be much slower. MBin is just pedal to the metal and literally accepting any bit of code at all, which also isn't really sustainable for a product that people want to use.

At this point, I dunno though, Ernest has been gone for a month and the site has been super slow and blips up and down all the time. I REALLY hope he's ok, but I'm not sure of the long term viability of /KBin anymore and am wondering what if the next blip just doesn't get resolved???

I agree on the MBin bros thing, 100%. Their attitude has really made me not want to even consider their project at all. I don't like the tankie devs on the Lemmy side of things, but, at the same time don't really think that matters all that much. If they do something bad, people can break off and spin off like MBin did.

To me, ideal world, enough people donate that Ernest can pay himself to work on it full time and maybe hire an extra FT dev (Nabu Casa hires like 30 devs to work on Home Assistant without taking in any VC debt or 3rd party money, so, it's at least feasible, but they built up 5ish years of goodwill before they spun up Nabu Casa and people were still initially skeptical), but that's not going to be possible if he disappears constantly so it's a catch-22.

Seriously though, I really hope he's ok and this hasn't been because something happened to him. It's really ominous that his last communication indicated he had surgery coming up and then complete radio silence

This scene for me (you can skip to 1:20 or so) showed that it's at least feasible, but it definitely takes a lot more than glasses, which is where many of the non Christopher Reeve's portrayals fall flat. They always play Superman in both roles but it's just Superman with glasses.

Christopher Reeve on the other hand showed that Clark Kent is the perfect disguise when portrayed correctly and it's at least understandable that especially the people that know Clark would never suspect for a second that he's Superman because they've never seen anything but a quiet, weak and easily frightened man who is nothing like Superman at all! Superman is also way taller!

Watching him stand up straight and put some confidence on his face, voice and transform into Superman over the course of 10ish seconds was one thing, but watching him deflate back into Kent in under 2 seconds was another altogether! That shift was jarring for me and showed just how good the disguise was and how good of an actor Reeve was.
