70 years ago in 1953, The US #Atomic #Energy Commission published Energy in the Future where they argued that burning #fossil #fuel releases CO₂, which affects #climate & #sea #level.

They pointed out that temperature had been increasing, #glaciers were retreating, and sea level was rising, and speculated that it was due to rising atmospheric CO₂ from land use change and fossil fuel burning!

We've known for 70 years!

Measurements from land-based instruments and airplane-mounted radars in Greenland’s far northeast reveal the extent of ice loss experienced by the 79° N-Glacier. The Alfred Wegener Institute’s findings indicate that the glacier’s thickness has reduced by over 160 meters since 1998...

Meltwater is hydro-fracking Greenland’s ice sheet through millions of hairline cracks – destabilizing its internal structure

"A moulin is forming right in front of me on the Greenland ice sheet. Only this really shouldn’t be happening here – current scientific understanding doesn’t accommodate this reality.

As a glaciologist, I’ve spent 35 yrs investigating how meltwater affects the flow and stability of and ice sheets."

NBC News: The more scientists study Greenland, the worse its ice melt looks. A new study found that the loss of ice has been understimated, adding to a recent string of research that have drawn attention to rapid change in Greenland. https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/scientists-study-greenland-worse-ice-melt-looks-rcna134261

This is my new . I have been exploring Mastodon since late 2022. Just migrated here from ThePettingZoo as it is closing down and over there I was previously know as Alaskan49. My politics lean "liberal", probably less flame than some, but I strongly believe in and there is plenty of work we can all do to help on that.

I am a mature gay man who believes in democracy and working towards a more verdant world for all. I married my husband in 2008, but we have been together over 40 years. I live on sacred lands of the Auke Kwaan and Taku Kwaan of the Tlingit peoples in present-day .

I am not a big social media person, but so far Mastodon has been more fun than most I have tried.

I like to post pictures of and images from the National Forest. I enjoy , and the study of . I also enjoy , , , , , , , , , and I have a thing for pictures of .

‘Dramatic’ acceleration: Switzerland has lost 10% of its glaciers in the last two years.

Glaciers across the entire country were affected, with those in southern and eastern Switzerland melting almost as much this year as in the record year 2022.

The biggest decline since measurements began was seen in 2022, followed by the second biggest this year, the Swiss Academy of Sciences and Glacier Monitoring Switzerland announced today.

I first met Geir Moholdt in Svalbard in 2005 when we were both PhD students at . Now we're both at this high level meeting for the panel, still talking about glaciers.
behind his title slide shows in summer, not much snow left, a terrible sign for a glacier, confirmed by red blobs that show thinning rates since the 1930s. Since 2011 the glaciers of Svalbard on average have lost half a metre per year!

Switzerland is expected to approve a new climate bill on Sunday, aimed at steering the country towards carbon neutrality by 2050, as glaciers melt rapidly.

The referendum is over a proposed law that would commit to slashing dependence on imported oil and gas, and to scaling up the development and use of greener alternatives.

The bill has strong public backing, though it has seen support slip to 63% in favour.

With the 4th day of 12%+ area melting in but still no net ice loss, it's probably time to re-up this very old post on the @polarportal on the difference between + ablation or over +
