PeerTube, the Fediverse's alternative to YouTube, is normally associated with video. However, you can also upload audio files directly to PeerTube. It will accept lots of audio formats including .mp3, .ogg, .aac, .flac, .wma etc.

You can optionally upload an image file as a thumbnail. If not, audio files will show a black screen by default.

You can find out more about PeerTube at https://fedi.tips/peertube-video-hosting-on-the-fediverse/

The mass enshittification of every major Internet platform hasn't exacty been a slow and subtle process, but I feel like generative AI has really slammed down the gas pedal (Twixter, Reddit, GitHub are prime examples).

I'm wondering (and kinda depressed) about YouTube being next, because there really isn't anything comparable out there. Vimeo's the only one with like quality, but their model creates an access barrier. Dailymotion? ha! And PeerTube's name makes it sound like an XXX broker, to say nothing of massive quality limitations, rampant low-quality conspiracy nonsense, and a whole bunch of (completely understandable) limitations regarding size and number of files.

I need to ask again; anyone know of any good channels out there? I'm familiar with the most popular channels on TILvids, so I'm thinking something outside of that sphere 🤔

I loaded up #NewPipe on my dinky tablet with the setup I had before November 2022, when I purged all Youtube channels from my NewPipe setup on my phone, and went #PeerTube-only.

I was expecting to see all kinds of high-quality #YouTube content that I was missing.

EGAD NO!!!

My old feed is full of just nonsense! Silly things people do for attention (even when they're talented and artsy), random clips that I just don't need, just tons and tons of wasted time.

PeerTube is a fantastic project. But its UI is designed around people creating "channels" for publishing video regularly to an audience, as a lot of people do on ThemTube. A lot of the PeerTube UI assumptions don't make sense if what you want is a video library, more like Vimeo. A dedicated host for videos (and other bulky media files) to be embedded elsewhere, or just shared within a group.

Does anyone know an actively maintained free code project designed for that?

Can someone explain something to me about ? As I understand it, if two people watching a video at the same time, it exchanges data between them, so save bandwidth for the server - but does this happen often? Every time I watch a video on peertube, there is maximal 1 other peer online. So the theory is great, but does it actually help anyhow in the real world?

Hello again #Fediverse, I may need your #fedihelp. So, here's a list of the Fediverse software I'm about to make temporary accounts for to test all the features and differences:

#Mastodon
#Glitchsoc
#GoToSocial
#Misskey
#Firefish
#Iceshrimp
#Friendica
#Lemmy
#Kbin
#Pleroma
#Akkoma
#Bonfire
#Peertube
#Pixelfed
#Owncast
#Funkwhale
#WriteFreely
#Plume

So, did I miss anything noteworthy? Does anyone have any tips or recommendations before I choose a server for any one of these? I'll probably be going for the most popular server on each for improved federation and maintenance.

Note: I'm using #Sharkey right now and Misskey forks are already overrepresented, so that's why it's not included.

I really should start making some and vlogs at least to get some content up and slowly start improving it. Just covering various projects I have done and doing. Sort of like a longer form Tiktok I guess that I’m already doing.

I hope to form a few relationships with computer companies for hardware reviews but as we know I also like to look at a lot of security products

I was looking for a 10th Fediverse instance to run, and I didn't have a Calckey instance yet.

So now I installed https://calckey.world 😎

Next steps: configure the thing and schedule backups.

Who will be my first user?

(So now I run 3 , 2 , a , a , a , a and a instance!)

Bon.

Looking for a PeerTube instance for game devlogs.

I have a crafts channel on makertube.net already but would prefer to spread myself around in case one server goes down. Also tbh I'm not even sure devlogs would count as "making" anyway.

Tried the instance finder on the PT homepage but it's pretty useless so if anyone knows where is stable and welcomes this kind of content I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

blog, to wordpress

When writing the initial version of our project plan as signed and agreed with by NlNet we didn’t know yet about the dynamics of the community, specifically about how the cooperation between the maintainers of the plugin and would be like. The level of collaboration with other developers would determine whether our project goals could only be achieved through a series of workarounds, or whether we could work together to strengthen interoperability and compatibility in the Fediverse.

Mobilizon was, until our project, the only Fediverse application with true event federation. limits its ActivityPub capabilities to sending notes, but is working on a true federation of events, and other services like have a very different approach to events: their implementation focuses on sending invitations rather than publishing events. As is usual with any software, you will find a lot of small bugs if you have not done any tests beforehand. In the case of Mobilizon, this was not possible since there were no alternative platforms to do the tests with, so the only option was to test the Federation with other Mobilizon servers. We seem to be the first and we are fascinated and incredibly grateful for the willingness and prioritization that such issues have among the other developers (thanks to tcit and les). The issues may seem small, but they have a big impact: .

The other deciding factor for us was that we didn’t know how close the interaction with the upstream WordPress AktivityPub project would be. The exchange of ideas and the desire for a joint solution is strong. We would like to thank @pfefferle again for the regular exchange, his ideas and inspiration, without his commitment to the community our project would be less sustainable.

Tasks done (almost)

  • We published a repository that aims to make it easy for other developers, including ourselves to start developing and debugging WordPress along with Mobilizon.
  • We have created a pull request to add management of various ActivityPub transformers to the admin interface. The current implementation basically works, but we have a lot to polish and improve on our roadmap.
  • Using that patched ActivityPub plugin we explored writing transformers for two popular event plugins, this gave us a lot insight on what is important. These transformers already have fundamental compatibility with Moblizon.
  • Updating our About us page showing some information who we are.

Upcoming tasks

  • Implement FEP-2677: Identifying the Application Actor
  • Implement the followers list of the application actor in the admin UI along with the ability to reject, approve, and remove followers. We are very inspired by how has solved this in the admin UI. This of course includes a an option as:manuallyApprovesFollowers that can be set for an ActivityPub actor within WordPress.
  • Write an initial draft of the user documentation informing about custom ActivityPub transformers and instance-to-instance federation with Mobilizon. The target audience will be non-tech people. Parts of this will also be used as a non-tech description of our project.
  • Improve the admin UI and propose a solution to handle the settings for each transformer, if there are any.
  • Write more transformers for other popular event plugins to discover common pitfalls.

If you have any questions, ideas, or would like to help us, for example by testing our progress yourself if your operate a WordPress site with events, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We don’t care if you have technical experience or what your background is: any kind of involvement is valuable to us.

I know everyone says this about Mastodon or whatever but seriously, figuring out an instance to join on PeerTube is actually extremely difficult. And they seem so expensive to run that I can't imagine they are getting by as well as smaller instances here.

How do I find an instance to join that I know is secure and will be here a long time, not just vanishing overnight?

Any Peertube instance recommendations?

I made an intro video for myself as an ESL (Eng 2d Lang) teacher. Taught myself how to do basic video editing and added royalty free background music. Posted to YouTube, who, of course, says it's a copyright violation. I'd rather post on PT anyway, but need to set up an account.

Eventually, I may turn this into an ESL dedicated account.
