faces a critical gap in western artillery ammunition needed to withstand attacks, officials have warned, as assistance runs out and fails to hit its own targets for increased arms production.

officials have warned that the coming months will stretch Ukraine’s ability to fight with fewer resources, with already exploiting the resource advantage to make gains in key locations such as around the strategic town of .

The and failing to match production against three comparatively small, highly sanctioned economies (, , ) is showing the level of incompetence in our Western defence ministries.

Those in charge of such embarrassing and dangerous outcomes for our European continent defence should be sacked and investigated. The fact that, after two years, we are still unable to ramp up production and continue to impose red lines on is utterly pathetic.

There’s lots of noise on social networks, both positive and negative, most people concerned about “demoralisation” caused by such a change in the course of war. But Syrskyi is not a new joiner, he had been the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces all this time!

I’d just wait and see.

joaocosta,

Great point. Absolutely. My father always used to say that the best sign that a well-known country is doing well is when you don't hear much from/about their leader. It means society is doing their thing, and the leader just facilitates it all.

NATO says we can't put boots on the ground or close the sky in Ukraine for a pathetically long list or reasons. We leave it to to fulfil NATO's mission alone with weak drip-drip military supplies. Fine.

But what's preventing us from giving a hand by hitting the factories in and that produce the drones and missiles is using to destroy Ukraine and commit ? Is NATO too weak for that too?

What's going on? Why is a sitting duck in this too?

It won't end well when is the only brave in the world after two years during which we have all seen tyrants unite to attack us all.

joaocosta,

@benroyce

Exactly! And what frustrates me the most is how politicians in democracies are so gentle about communicating this. The same goes for climate change.

joaocosta,

@picard @benroyce

Absolutely. The main difference today is the smaller number of empires, and how much weaker they are.

Resources today are more limited too, and that could mean a faster, less deadly conflict. But we need to be using the latest technology to make it happen. And only by moving our NATO policy from deterrence to defence could bring this to a quick end. At the moment, we're sort of in between the two. We're taking too long and risk bypassing defence when forced into war itself.

That's because anti-Israel and pro-Russian protesters form the same web of deep-rooted antisemitism in society. They call for Israeli ceasefire when Hamas attacks Jews, and Ukrainian ceasefire when Russia attacks Ukrainians, respectively.

Many are peace supremacists who shout from their privileged position of a peaceful society, disregarding the right to self-defence when attacked, and forgetting that peace in their society was only possible after defeating their enemies in battle.

"It’s hard to find something pithy to say about 2023, a year of dissonant extremes, when wildfires devoured Canadian forests, Twitter withered into X, the Titan submersible imploded into infamy, Silicon Valley’s power players rejoiced over the rise of generative AI, scientists cheered Crispr treatment breakthroughs, peace activists became terrorist-attack victims, and the world despaired over the thousands of children killed in Gaza. It’s not a tidy time. It is, frequently, a painful one.

Appropriate, then, that this was a year for unwieldy, searching, big-swing books. Doorstoppers and sagas rose to the moment, providing insight into an increasingly inscrutable world even when they couldn’t provide comfort. As always, this is an idiosyncratic, incomplete, and subjective list, the result of one person’s avid but disorganized reading schedule. But these are WIRED's best books of 2023. Here’s hoping this list helps you find your next great read."

The leadership said time and again that it would support for as long as it would take. Small print: terms and conditions applied.

's bet on US terms and conditions is paying off: he knew his minions were in place and ready to act when needed. He saw that the US was too scared of victory to arm Ukraine to win. And now, is stuck.

'Fresh details of what is now being called “a Scholz moment” emerged on Friday... the German chancellor suggested to Orbán that it would be a good moment to grab a coffee as talks over enlargement hit deadlock. Orbán left the room in the full knowledge of what was about to happen, and when he returned, everyone was laughing, said one diplomat. "Someone asked him, ‘How was your coffee?’ He wasn’t very happy and told them he had “used the opportunity to go to the toilet”.'
