First impression of :

It's not that bad! There's not as much stuff as I had been promised, still more of that on and . Not as much -style clout-chasing as you nerds sealioned about either. It's actually very Fedi-like but with Twitter's sense of humor. I like the choose-your-own algo feeds too. or should steal that!

Currently my biggest gripes with #Bluesky:
• No hashtags (not always is a sentence filled with relevant keywords)
• App feels clunky (scrolling, copy text, translate, posting content, no timeline marker) compared to native apps
• Still no gif and video support (I often hear #Mastodon needs to improve the latter as well?)
• No media tab, no likes tab
• Hard to follow specific topics, without hashtags, search results are limited
• Huge gaps in the communities

I was kind of expecting to at least make it through six or eight months before having a major content moderation SNAFU (invite only, etc.), but nay, it seems like centralized social networks gonna cent.

Of course, it's never too late for Google to top the show by jumping on the bandwagon, sinking a few billion dollars into their own platform, then fucking it all up in 48 hours.

Honestly, I'm all out of popcorn.

Giving a whirl. First impression is that it's a huge improvement over - both for screen reader and the tone of responses to questions about further accessibility improvements.

Bluesky’s Custom Algorithms: Could Giving Users a Choice in Choosing/Creating own Algorithms Be the Future of Social Media?

Social media algorithms can do wonderful things. They have the power to make or break careers, amplify political polarization (Facebook, Twitter), make people do dumb stuff for clicks, (YouTube), and supposedly promote Chinese Communist ideals to our children ...continues

I made a gem that connects to the "firehose" streaming websocket and parses the binary messages into post/event data that you can process easily: http://github.com/mackuba/skyfall

Now, I want to use this to filter posts and build a custom feed 😏

I've published a full example project that implements a custom feeds service for all in , using the two gems I made earlier (for streaming from firehose and for implementing the server endpoints): https://github.com/mackuba/bluesky-feeds-rb

90% of all threads will include :

  • Someone aggressively chastising you from a weird, obscure instance for even trying it

  • Some thirsty person you don't know asking for an code

  • A tech boi (with a account usually under 1 year old) mansplaining the differences between and

  • Someone dropping their BlueSky pagelink with no explanation on why they want you to follow them

  • Someone reminding the thread that anywhere is better than

sparkit,
