Bluesky and AT protocol

This is what considers a perfectly acceptable implementation of a two-factor authentication system.

Just send an email with the 2FA code. This is insanely irresponsible and I'm sure they know it.

Since most people unfortunately reuse passwords, any sane person must reasonably assume the email is likely to be compromised as well...

I have no clue why they don't use . Unless the attacker has access to the device with the shared secret, it's borderline impossible to defeat.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@dusnm This is a temporary solution they've implemented very recently as a "quick fix" because some accounts really needed it, and a proper implementation was still a bit away. They're working on a more complete authentication system with OAuth and proper 2FA, which should be available maybe in a couple of months.

dusnm,
@dusnm@fosstodon.org avatar

@mackuba TOTP can be considered a "quick fix" as it's trivial to implement.

I reached out and asked him why, which is where our call began…what follows is a missing chapter of internet history that sheds light not only on Bluesky, but , X, and the past 5 years of censorship & backlash. The future will be decentralized, or it won’t be free."

Interesting interview with Jack Dorsey. Why he left , the relationship with Twitter and what he thinks about .

Where I agree with him: The importance of identity handling and the need to divide (commercial) platform and protocol.

rolle,
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

Bluesky enthusiasts are stating that Bluesky has ”plans” to make ATProto universal and transfer it to W3C or the like. Well, there is no evidence that Bluesky wants to give up control or the protocol is going to be widely adopted after 5 years of development so forgive me being sceptical. The story is a bit different with ActivityPub.

torgo,
@torgo@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle agree. If they were serious about this, they would commit to participate in social web working group and to moving toward full federation with the rest of the , instead of scoffing at anyone who raises these points.

@yachtie @Mastodon They tend to not like journalists here (although tbh Bluesky also has this problem)…

Jack Dorsey is furious that has attracted "very very common" people. He also doesn't like the idea of moderation tools facilitating the banning of racists.

All these tech billionaires are like a version of the movie Big, in which a pre-adolescent boy wakes up in the body of an aging Howard Hughes. Or Colonel Kurtz. Or a sardine.

The is great from the Fediverse side, but the side is still missing a lot. Posts longer than the limit just get truncated; wouldn't a Read More link be better? And self-replies don't seem to get bridged at all, so threads don't work.

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

@arnelson Yeah, I think this is all on the task list

rolle,

@TVPaulD In some form you will, because Threads is implementing ActivityPub and Bluesky can be bridged via BridgyFed. In the future it would be possible to just use one to access them all.

misc,

@serenebabe Essentially, yeah. Though I mostly did that to try the tech. I think it’s more useful for people who only want to post in one place, but want to be able to interact with people in other places.

» was launched to become the open source protocol layer for social media platforms, but the team ended up “literally repeating all the mistakes we made” at

»There’s “absolutely no way” social media companies remain censorship resistant without moving to open protocols. “We need to change the foundation everything is built on.”«

So is implementing an (unspecified) new protocol for direct messages. Because AtProto is really not suitable for anything that isn't 100% public.

I wonder whether they can do this now that Jack is off the board. But maintaining two separate protocols in the same app? Who knows, maybe is next?

@Arataka Some of the reporting on this topic is really messy.

Jack was on the board, but allegedly had little to do with the day-to-day operations and decisions. He was supposedly bullied off of Bluesky last year by people still mad at him for Twitter, and has largely been supporting Nostr for the duration.

His unfollowing thing on Twitter is supposedly just a test of the algorithm as it exists today. That’s what Jack said, anyway.
