nekohayo, (edited ) My neighbor is throwing a bunch of #houseplants at me to care for during her absence this summer.
Among them is this wonderful mystery plant is. She did not remember what it is. Apparently it does fine in the shade, not even next to a window.Update: turns out it's a zamioculcas zamiifolia, and it just so happens that I was looking for one too! Talk about coïncidences.

Natalie, @nekohayo Looks like a ZZ plant to me. They are such troopers, our bedroom gets almost no light and I forget to water it all the time.
nekohayo, @Natalie @dartily
Bingo! Turns out that was exactly it!
The funniest part, besides the fact that neither me nor the neighbor had a clue what it was… is that I had in my todo list to "Try to find cuttings of a ZZ plant, I heard these things are indestructible like sansevieras" 😆 So, side-quest accidentally completed!
Jeremiah, What is the best way to water your houseplants when away from for 2 weeks?
The glass ball things have never worked well for me.
I backed Altifarm's Cura system on Kickstarter 2 years ago and still haven't received it. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hrbstn/cura-led-grow-light-for-indoor-plants/description
I am considering 2 options, but don't have any anecdata on them:
O'Drip system: https://www.smartasaker.com/en/automatic-watering-system
Hozelock ceremic cones: https://www.smartasaker.com/en/holiday-watering-cones-
relistan, @Jeremiah In the summer is the weather good enough and do you have a place to put them outside? I have done this when I went to Portland for a month in July. I just put them all next to each other and used a small sprinkler on a battery-powered timer. It watered them every day for like 8 minutes. There was wasted water, no doubt. But they were HUGE when I got back.
Jeremiah, @relistan I like your idea. Sadly, I don’t have outdoor space of my own. But my friend nearby does. She’ll be away too so she might not mind me taking over her balcony to do this. 🤔

Flying Saucer Plant
Pilea peperomioidesDefinitely a medium indirect light plant.
#houseplantsThe same pot but now there are many more leaves, they are getting longer and wider. The leaves are of varying sizes due to new growth
Now in a plastic yogurt container, the center stem has substantially gained in height has new leaves extend radially. They're perky and tall, nearing a full inch for some.
pixouls, @Loukas neat! I love how yours are fanned up like that, and it has a lucky cat to keep it company
Loukas, @pixouls it's like a dog with its face pressed to the window, waiting for its best friend to get home from work. And by 'friend' I mean the sun, and by 'home from work' I mean 'finally rise after the Swedish winter' ☺️

Natalie, I need the teeth hoya.
(Hoya lasiantha)Edit: Bad news, the teeth hoya is very expensive ~ $150 😅
paulasimoes,
plantsandpots, Syngonanthus chrysanthus, also known as "Mikado plant".
The leaves are super soft to the touch, and the little spheres on the tips aren't painted! They are naturally gold!
senanthic, greenhouse looking a bit full. anyone got an ID on the begonia in the second pic? #houseplants
An unidentified begonia with dark green leaves and little white flowers.
linux_mclinuxface, @senanthic very nice! How does the pegboard hold up to the water?
They’ve not mixed well for me in the past.
senanthic, @linux_mclinuxface it’s been fine. orchid roots have grown through it which has been problematic.

rakyat, @luthien1126 This one is cute and not scary at all!
cohanf, For a brief break from snow pics, here are a couple of views of a little #succulent I got myself as a slightly belated 60th #birthday present! Seems it is likely x Gasteraloe 'Kebela' an intergeneric hybrid, though I haven't found any details on parentage. I notice with the big uptick in the popularity of cacti and succulents in recent years, there is a huge amount of related content online, almost all of it is very low quality! #winter #houseplants #gasteria #aloe sneaking in a #FensterFreitag

josh, I admire my fiddle leaf fig's ambition in sprouting new growth in the dead of winter. But also I'm like, chill out friend. It's okay to hibernate.

Natalie, Ahhhhhh my epiphyllum finally got a flower born! The first one was eaten by a night creature but this morning I woke up to this beautiful bloom. There's a couple more flowers waiting to open too. I think the flowers are using up all the plant's nutrients because the rest of it looks a bit withered. I fed it some fertiliser last week and some plant tonic the other day and it looks a little better but it's putting out all these blooms like a trooper.
A front on angle of the flower showing the many tiny stamen and the large stigma in comparison.
afg, Why did my prayer plant die suddenly? https://www.allforgardening.com/687697/why-did-my-prayer-plant-die-suddenly/
beanjbunny, @afg They love water and humidity and get really upset if they dry out
louisffourie, As a little fun project, I created a new bedside lamp, inspired by the terrariums of James Wong. Got the large vase from Michael's and the driftwood from a petshop. There are e3 plants - from top to bottom, they are a vanilla orchid, a staghorn fern, and a blonde Boston fern. The latter is planted in akadama.

benjaoming, I ordered some bugs - online!
And today, I received 100 "orius majusculus" and they will hopefully eat all the thrips that have been ruining my #houseplants for years.
Thrips are little pesky insects that eat leaves from the inside and kill house plants unnoticed. They're hard to get rid of with conventional house-hold methods.
The orius are very speedy and I've now distributed ~half of them to the plants. Gonna see if some neighbors also need help getting rid of thrips...
To be continued...
benjaoming, @reynir I think aiming for a balance makes sense in a garden.
I'm a bit confused about what to do with pests in houseplants. It does feel a bit consumer-dumb to buy 100 predator bugs (that's the smallest amount), then just let them have a big party and die.
But it sure was easier than to wash the plants numerous times without results.
At my office, I found 3 thrips on a plant that was never in contact with my house plants. So I guess the thrips come from plant shops....
benjaoming, @reynir selling plants with pests on is the plant shops version of planned obsolescence.... plant obsolescence 🥁️ 👋️ 🚪️ 🚕️ 🛌️

chillicampari, About a year and a half ago I had to "chop and prop" (cut/propagate) this Sinocrassula due to stem rot (see the post about it on my old account here https://mastodon.social/@chillicampari/108223295472840443 )
It took a while with a few false starts and there were times I almost threw it away thinking it was dead but I'm glad I stuck with it and here's what it looks like now. This time they grew a lot of air roots which looks a bit weird but it seems stable.
#florespondence #succulents #plantstodon #houseplants #plants @plants
chillicampari,
mfeilner, @chillicampari @plants Well, they do that when nobody's home. And all they leave is some camouflage rotten parts. So the owners think they died and feel bad. But the truth is something else. Wait for it. ...
Rihilism, Sometimes things don't go as planned w/ houseplants. My purple spiderwort (pretty sure it's Tradescantia pallida) did NOT like being moved outdoors this yr & I lost it. Luckily a friend still has the clipping/plant I gave to him in 2007, which I collected in 2002, which he gave to me in 2015, and which he re-gave to me again last month. THAT one just bloomed. #Sharing always pays off👍.

PhilRudland, (edited ) I've realised that I have been here since last November, but have not yet made an #introduction !
Well, here goes.
I'm Phil, born 52 years ago. My partner since 2005 is Hayley.
We are both gardeners but semi retired now. At home, Hayley does the outside gardening and I look after the #houseplants.
My days tend to consist of #gardening in the morning, playing #Theremin in the afternoon and #StarCitizen in the evening.
Between us we have 5 children, 5 grand children plus one due.
So life is busy!
